Miami is acquiring a major scoring punch in Powell while the Clippers find a dynamic lob threat. Both Powell and Collins are coming off strong seasons. Utah has turned Collins' expiring deal into an asset in the form of a second-rounder in return.

Keep a very close eye on the Clippers not only adding Bradley Beal, once he is bought out by the Suns, but also bringing back Chris Paul for his final NBA season.

Yeah, this seems like a likely precurser to wind up with Beal. LAC is a deep and talented team. That is a smart front office. Probably not a top contender due to Harden's aversion to big games and Leonard's health, but they have have managed that team very smartly. Collins should be a real nice fit there. Playing with Lopez at times he can be the role man with Harden. Beal is probaby not as good as Powell, but it could be close if Beal can stay healthy. Another good West team. There are going to be some very disappointed teams in the West next year.

What an incredible trade for Miami. Turned Love+Anderson into Norm. Just on a value front that is a no brainer, regardless of fit.
For the clippers, this deal makes no sense unless you’re getting Beal. At that point, their team is a bunch of freaking all stars past their prime. Especially if they land CP3. Will they stay healthy? Who knows. But on paper their team is scary sheesh

Utah is not tanking this year. They just plan to be really bad
So the Clippers are staying good but looking forwards to 2027 with cap room. We will see if anyone hits the market. If true, it probably is unlikely they extend Collins.
Miami improves but is Herro and an extended Powell really smart business? Especially with a team without a clear future.
Also continues a trend that is you make a mistke on evaluation or with a bad contract, it is going to be tough to get off that player now. Even if they are an expiring.

I am surprised how little value expiring contracts have. Are there no more longer term bad salaries around?
Seems like you are either a star or you get MLE level money. I was joking a bit, but it looks teams really got very conservative with new deals in recent years. There is Patrick Williams, no one will be willing to touch that contract without significant assets attached. McDaniels contract might start to look ugly in a year or two, if he doesn't further improve his performances. Anunoby, Hart and Bridges after this season will be a problem for NY (too high salaries for non-stars). Jerami Grant is already reported to be untradeable. Toronto has a couple of guys in this range. Miami got an absolute steal, although there is a questionable fit between Herro and Powell. They literally paid nothing for him. But, problem will be next season - are you willing to pay a 33 year old 6th man type 20+ mil for several seasons? Or will he walk for a MLE?

That was my expected consequences from the new rules. You pay the stars and it´s MLE and below for the rest. You can really earn your money and a reputation as an agent these days. Whoever got Poetl and Reid those long-term contracts are some bad boys. Only way I´d pay Poetl 104M for his level of play was on an eight year contract starting at age 25. That´s why I also still disagree about Grimes being a cap decision. He´s not getting much more than the MLE, which basically is Martin money.
The only thing that surprises me is the willingness to still pay the old players big money, although I guess you could argue the change there was that teams simply only give out short deals. Once you do a Holiday or a PG13, you are completely screwed. Mavs have two of the risky old bust contracts in that regard, especially AD at 180/3.

Grimes WAS a cap decision 100%. He was moved due to him demanding way over MLE and Mavs having/offering several mill below. As is being discussed, every dollar makes a diff now.
FWIW Martin seems overpaid and a bad decision in and of itself to add his salary, but he is not getting MLE money. MLE is ~5M higher which is a difference-making amount in 2025.

Do we know Grimes was demanding "way over MLE" at the time? I think the rumor was he was offered Naji contract (9 mil) and rejected it. The guess at the time is that he was looking for MLE money. I don't think there was a rumor that he was looking for significantly more than MLE until recently after he went ape shit in Philly. It will be interesting to see what he ends up with given the lack of FA money. If he ends up signing for something around MLE he will be a significant asset.
