Turning the page - vfromlmf - 02-07-2025 I posted earlier that I ordered a Luka Lakers jersey. I felt like it was something I just needed to do as a thank you for all the joy he brought me over the last six years. Like many here, I thought he would be the next Dirk. Well, it turns out Luka was just our Wonder Boy. And Dirk is still the Mavs' GOAT. And I'm ok with that. Still hurts to lose Luka. I'll admit to getting a chuckle out of seeing Kyrie get doubled while Exum dribbled the ball off his foot in the last seconds of the Sixers game. I tuned in against Boston with perverse interest in seeing the Mavs get blown out. Strange thing happened though. Klay got hot. And damn, even though he's not a homegrown Mavs, that was pretty awesome to see. Ball popped too. And that Christie kid. Only 21. He's got something. Mavs still have Lively too. Only 20. New young core? Younger than Luka actually. And then the press conference. That's Anthony Davis up there. I like defense. I like ball movement, player movement. Toughness, athleticism, 2-way players. This team won't live or die by the 3. Still sucks to lose Luka. But that Lakers jeresy I ordered? I'm giving it to my son. MFFL RE: Turning the page - fifteenth - 02-07-2025 I know if I watch, the same thing will happen to me. And I'm so conflicted about it. I watched the game last night. I was also interested to see Boston stick it to the Mavs. But, I quickly found myself rooting for the guys again. I miss Luka and it's hard not seeing him out there. However, the Mavs still have a great team that is fun to watch. The new offense reminds me of watching GS. RE: Turning the page - MarkAguirreWrathofGod - 02-07-2025 I have approximately 3 games of hate watch left in my fandom. Saturday against Houston. I don’t think Nico or Dumomt will show their faces but fascinated to find out. Feb.25th in LA. And then April 9th Luka’s return. If we meet the Lakers in the play-in or playoffs I may watch. After that, I’m good. I don’t support what the NBA represents. Silver could’ve vetoed the trade. But I expect he got exactly what he wanted out of whatever behind the scenes deal was made. Looking forward to turning the page. I will spend the extra time making music and reading the “great books” I’ve always wanted but have somehow never read. Don Quixote. Maybe Middlemarch. No ofense on this my friend, but i really don't like how Luka looks wearing yellow and i'm not talking about team. Ugly jersey in my opinion. RE: Turning the page - Dirk 4 ever - 02-08-2025 Hi there, first time poster , reader for years. You all need to come down and think about if you are a mavericks fan or just a luka fan boy. Im from germany so i know some things about going with your team from bottom to top. Im a life long Gladbach fan on the soccer part so google if you dont know ithe team on the german soccer league. There are ups and down throughout fandom. I was a lifelong fan of dirk sice i grew up with him conquering NA sports. I was privileged as many of you to see the greatness of dirk for years and i have seen the whole championchip run from half around the world live just to be witness of the greatness. I cried a lot when he achieved the ultimate goal. BUT i was a mavs fan also and will stick with them till the end of time wheter there is a german player or not. All those years of Dirk it was about the team and not about Dirk. So i will stick with his legacy. Its about Dallas and the team and not Luka or about Kyrie or anything. Now is the time to button up! Dallas fan or Luka fan. We all question whether Nico made the right decicion or not but only time will tell. Maybe Luka will be hurt half as the time as a Laker, maybe not. I believe in guys like Dereck Lively a young man who has faced adversitiy early on in his life over Luka, who had had the advantage of beeing more talented than all of his peers for all his live all of the time. Better be a hard working looser ,than the privileged winner. And´i guess Lively will win out after all since he builds a culture for years, just like Dirk did. Thanks for bringing the heat with your first post. I appreciate your different positive outlook. But I don't think I can share in that optimistic mindset. I agree that there are ups and downs in fandom in general. I was there in the 90s with this team. I was there throughout Dirk's entire journey. And alas I was there for Luka's journey. I am a Mavs fan. But never, in the history of any major sport in America, was there a betrayal like this to a fanbase from the team itself. We are accustomed to stars in the NBA betraying the fanbase by asking out and blowing up the team. Lebron and KD paved the way the last decade and a half and made the NBA feel more like a game of musical chairs with guys switching teams. But Luka was different. Luka, like Dirk, was loyal to Dallas and its fans. But the Mavs front office was not loyal to Luka or its fans. And they had no better explanation than to say this move would help the team win "now", ignoring that the Mavs were on the doorstep of the ultimate prize not just 8 months ago. This isn't an easy one to get over. It was an unprecedented trade and an even unprecedented return for what should've been the most or 2nd most valuable trade asset in the NBA. And what's worse, the only way this trade doesn't become the most embarrassing stain ever in the NBA is if Luka breaks down and becomes a shell of himself. I don't want to root for that scenario. I am still a Mavs fan, but this move makes me question if the Mavericks right now are the organization I fell in love with and became a fan of. We'll see. While I appreciate your thoughtful insight, I'm going to have to strongly disagree. This wasn't a normal trade. This is equivalent to the Bulls trading MJ after losing to the Pistons over and over. He was our MJ. Had it been any other player on the team, I would absolutely agree with everything you said so nothing personal. Welcome to board. RE: Turning the page - Dirk 4 ever - 02-08-2025 I agree fully that this was not the haul i imagined we could get for luka. The thing is , we don´t know what happened behind the scenes and probably never will. Maybe the ingame bitching about reffng was only the tip. I gladly build around Lively and PJ for that matter. We still have Kyrie who was known to be a problem but never was in Dallas. Maybe Kidd, Kyrie, Tyson and even Dirk come to the point Luka just wasnt the culture cornerstone to build around. He was a building block talent wise but maybe not much after that. Being upset with a Nico lead front office and expressing that grief equates to not supporting Dereck Lively? I missed a piece of the logic chain. Regardless, welcome, stick around, keep posting and thanks for your thought! I agree that the fans know little about what happened behind the scenes. maybe it was an order from the owner who wants a relocation of the team and the minimum financial commitment possible by 2027. Nico imho is a scapegoat in some way. he had to justify a stupid trade he himself may also utterly hate. Nico gets paid for whatever he did, and he also gets paid to claim responsibility for the aftermaths of the trade. it's nico's job and he has no love for the team or the city, it's understandable he did whatever was needed to keep his job, but still, fuck Nico the shameless shithead Harrison. luka may not be the right player for us to build around. he's still a good player and probably he will become the new face of the league in LA, but i just find it hard to root for him anymore now that he's wearing the LA jersey. |
