Grant Afseth (@GrantAfseth)
Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II (right shoulder sprain) is doubtful to play against the Chicago Bulls.

Bulls have been pretty feisty. Being short on big defenders is going to hurt. Kyrie has been great this year. I think it is time for a Luka is the best player in the game game where he puts the team on his shoulders and makes everyone better.

This is low-key kind of a big game.

3rd game in four nights (we saw how that went last time) against an opponent that kind of needs to be an assumed win, on paper, coming off of a tough loss, to stay above .500? And to top it off, I'm not overly confident the team knows how to play defense with both Lively AND Washington out.

Could be a bummer of a night. I sure hope not.

I have a bad feeling about this one having no PJ, Lively, or Kleber. Defense could be hemorrhaging.

We'll see though

Gotta hope for the best...

1) maybe the others will see this as opportunity to communicate out there and up their defensive effort.

2) maybe this is an opportunity for the offense to get going, which might even be worth a couple of games with lackluster defense, in the long run. The offensive chemistry hasn't been great for any meaningful stretch, so far, despite there being flashes of what could be.

I predict a huge night for Naji.

Hm, no production from the bench. Of course, the bench was listed on the injury report, so not so surprising.

Horton-Tucker sure seems to be enjoying that home cooking. Chicago Deep Dish. Dude’s gonna be out of the league soon.

Great win and Mavs have made Chicago look like they are one of the worst teams in the league. Mavs continue to win games they should win. Good performance on both ends and it sure helped Chicago couldn't hit a broad side of a barn from deep. On to some very tough games next

Mavs took care of business. The Bulls have gotten off to an ok start, but that is a bad team. They were missing a few guys as well, but that team should not be trying to win...as they apparantly are. Their rookie looked pretty good, but can't make much off one game.

Marshall continued to impact games. How Luka started is my favorite Luka. I love when he begins games by getting others shots. Defense and giving up offensive rebounds will need to be monitored closely. Mavs were missing most of their good defenders, but they still have plenty of work to do. Pretty shocking the TV crew said last night was the first game the other team didn't score on their first possession of a game.

Even if they beat a hot PHX team on Friday, I think they would still be a game behind expectations to start the season. A mixed bag 5 game homestand. Some really enjoyable stretches in games, but a lot of uneven play outside of these stretches.

I couldn't believe how bad some of the Bulls players looked in this one. The Mavs' defensive effort had something to do with it, but Patrick Williams, Josh Giddey and some others looked like they don't belong in the NBA out there.

Giddey seemed, at times, to try too hard to be the hero and get Chicago momentum, but it didn't work.

Gaff took a beating last night. Hits to his thigh and face. Hope we're not down both Gaff and DLive on Friday.

First time in a while I've seen OMax get some run. Still trying hard to make an impact, but I like his energy. Size-wise I'd love for it to click for him so he can move into at least the 10-man rotation. Wonder if he could develop into a small-ball center like Green in GS.

I agree with rest of your comment, so I will focus on this. I also agree Mavs looked great with Luka shooting less early, but still this came against a team that was playing badly. It was visible Luka was making an effort to share the ball more. But, this might not be the general plan. Might be, the general plan actually is for Luka to dominate in the first half with Kyrie taking over in the second. Thing that worked great in the best stretch of last season. It was also mentioned, I think by Luka, in this season.

Something to observe going forward, because it might not be just Luka wanting to play a certain way but a general plan. Will he continue to make an effort to change the offense or is this just something to have fun against a bad team. I would understand the idea. Luka is one of best one on one players in the league and if opponent doesn't double, he should score efficiently. If they double, he finds an open man. With guys like Klay around him, it is a much more difficult decision for the opponents to double Luka. Of course so far this season, Luka mostly hasn't been an efficient scorer. But, we have 5 seasons of data to believe things will get back to "normal" sooner than later.

I think this has been the calculus Luka has had since arriving in Dallas.   If they don't double, he can murder teams.  If they do double, he will pass to the open man for an open shot.  Tough to argue with that (even though I am not crazy with that style of play) as we typically have very good offenses due to Luka.   I just think the talent has increased where we don't need to treat everyone like DFS.  IE...you get the ball when you are wide open.  With Klay and a few others, they need to get more touches to find some rythem.

The thing I have never liked is the early possession, no pass three pointers to begin games.  Now, it is easy to forget when he was shooting near 40% last year.   I am just not a big fan of that type of play when the game is starting.  I have no idea what the Math says though if these are good shots.

I think the data that spawned “seven seconds or less” found that those early shots are actually higher percentage.
