I think this is a reasonable outlook. The right outlook, probably.

@"DanSchwartzgan" in the scenario where Ross fits in great here, what happens if they want him back. No bird rights, so how will that look?

RE: Buyout Market 2023: Mavs interested in Terrence Ross? - Smitty - 02-11-2023

People talk about he Luka affect and that’s the only thing that makes THJ playable at times. I expect the Mavs get the best of an already better than Timmy, T. Ross.

Hardy may not be ready for playoff minutes and we know Timmy can shoot you out of a game so if/when Timmy goes 1-8 to start the game, Kidd has a veteran (imo better) alternative to go to rather than just keeping Timmy out there for 35 minutes on one of his off nights.

I would love for both THJ and Ross to get around 15 minutes each, where they can both be most effective and whoever is hitting that night can play a bit more.

He's ready and so is his three million dollar smile.

Oh I would love nothing more. But the playoffs are a different animal and the kid, is still a kid.

Either way, you can never have enough shooters.

Interesting detail about Ross.  He started out with Aaron Mintz at CAA, switched to Klutch and then 10 months ago switched back to Mintz at CAA.

I think if he had made it to free agency without his buyout, there is a pretty good chance he's a Vet Min this summer given his age and diminished role and numbers in Orlando.  There is at least some chance he improves upon that value here if he gets to play a lot and shows more in the tank than he did on a rebuilding team.  If so, then it is Vet Min or part of an exception as we won't have cap room and even if we did, he wouldn't be a priority.

And this kid has it.

Ross shooting 38% in Orlando is probably 41-42% here since they'll all be open shots.

I think Hardy has a much higher ceiling than most everyone. Nobody will agree with this, but I can see him as a 20 ppg version of Dame time. His movement and shot remind me of Dame. He'll never score 30 a game and probably won't be as clutch, but he physically reminds me of Dame.

RE: Buyout Market 2023: Mavs interested in Terrence Ross? - Smitty - 02-11-2023

From discord: Ref. T. Ross

38% from 3
most of his shots are C&S 3s and hes 40% on those.
Hes shooting 55% on 3s in Jan.
Almost all of his 3s are off assists. Seems to be a perfect fit.

And that's not to say that Hardy will not fail, he's just not afraid to fail.

...which greatly improves the learning curve.

I'll take Ross. The other top buyout options will probably require a bidding war that will take extra time so it's not worth it. Get Ross in fast and let's move on. Outside of Danny Green and maybe Justin Holiday, there are no defensive specialist SG/SF available out there. Whoever you're bringing in will just be part of the rotation to buy some rest for Green and Bullock.

RE: Buyout Market 2023: Mavs interested in Terrence Ross? - ThisIStheYear - 02-11-2023

Ross I guess as long as he doesn’t play. He did have a decent year and a half run about 6 years ago.  I’d prefer to let it be though. Just afraid Kidd will actually try to use him as a rotational piece.

There's rarely any bidding war (or bidding, either) or delay on buyout guys looking for a team. These players all get pro-rated rest-of-season minimum from whichever team they pick (not by rule, but that's the practice, since they have already been paid on the old contract; we don't see any of them get more hardly ever). So the decision-making is pretty quick.

It takes a few days to clear waivers, and by the time it's over they should know where they're headed and be ready to sign.

Then it takes a few days to get up to speed with their new team. Not likely to see Ross (or whoever else) in a Dallas uni for about a week.

Man, his long term on/off paints a different picture.  Over the last 4 seasons, Ross has had one of the worst net ratings and one of the worst defensive ratings on a very bad team.  His EPM is below replacement level the last two years.  I don't think most scouting reports are going to suggest Ross is a good defender.  For all the bitching folks do about Timmy, I'm not sure we want to bring in another one.

He shot 29% last year and has not shot over 35% in the last three years.  He is more inconsistent than Timmy, and probably a worse defender right now.

Having two Timmys would be amazing!

RE: Buyout Market 2023: Mavs interested in Terrence Ross? - Mavsfan12 - 02-11-2023

The player I am most interested in seeing on the court making his debut for the Mavs is not on the buyout list...  he is on our roster!  I want to know what the deal is with Morris.  Is he recovering from something?  Has he just lost his game?  He fits the bill as a big wing better than any of the other players we have available, and he has been quoted as being excited about getting playing time here.  It seems he has just been stuck behind some guys the last two seasons, but WHY?  Can he still play?  Because he would fill a need...
