Last season - payroll 175 and tax 170.
This season (so far) - payroll 190 and tax 170
2023-24 (projection) - payroll 202 and tax 170
If my assumptions are correct, that's 9 roster spots at ~$182M and a pretty big question mark in Dray, assuming he's still on the team and opts in would tack on $27m. By the time they get to 15, it's hard to imagine they'll be under that $200M number. $202M might be optimistic on your part, but I guess that depends on your personal thoughts about Dray. I think they work something out.
I'm just not sure I like the current cap rules or if the tax system really dissuades teams from going into it. It just feels like if you are willing to spend, you should keep spending that same amount to maintain flexibility (which we can probably circle back to the why the Mavericks should have figured out a way to keep Brunson). Repeater tax needs to be much heftier if they want teams operating closer to the cap. Credit to GSW though, they've done a lot of smart stuff over the years (drafting the core, developing players and turning the KD fallout into something positive) while getting a little lucky on timing (KD signing).
It's also kind of crazy that our payroll is only about 30M different than GSWs.

I was wondering how they would handle him being out for the season.
On a different note, a little over a year ago there was thinking Griffin has done a bad job and his job may be in jeopardy. Maybe that still happens and maybe the team he put together just doesn't work, but they have really made some interesting moves and still have future picks coming to them.
I think these are the additions:
CJ McCollum- trade and extension
Herb Jones- second round
Jose Alvarado- undrafted
Dyson Daniels- First round pick
Trey Murphy- first round pick
Jonas Valancunas- trade
Larry Nance- trade and extension
Devonte Graham- trade and has not really worked out so far
I think if Zion is healthy all year, that team is going to be a problem. May take some growing pains learning to fit in around Zion though.

They were a problem without him last year. They took Phoenix to six tough games before bowing out. If they get anything north of 65 games out of him, look out. All of a sudden, the Southwest division minus SA is looking kinda tough.

I think the Hornets are going to be a seller at some point this year. They will probably wait to see if they can get the Lakers package and clear future salary. I see bad things this year for the Hornets.
If the Lakers package doesn't happen, I could see the Hornets making a trade purely on saving money. Rozier and Hayward have big salaries. Not sure there is a path that is feasible for the Mavs without Hardaway, right.

Intriguing player who is probably years away if he even ever makes it. But IMO, I am a firm believer one two way guy should be a two year project guy. This is the type of player you take gambles on. The negative is by the time he is ready to compete for a real roster spot, he is probably on another team.

Still head banging that the Mavs finally got a major gem in the second round... and then botched his contract.
It would have been great if he were a restricted free agent, but then again, the offseason suggests that Cuban wouldn't have matched that offer sheet.

I can't remember the last time I saw a contract structured like that. Basically $70mil unguaranteed. I wouldn't have extended him in the first place given how many problems KPJr already has had in 4 years.
