I am quite surprised Lebron signed a 1 plus 1 to stay with the Lakers for at least the next two years...and probably 3.  Maybe I shouldn't have been.   It just seems like for a guy who wants one more championship or 2, that he would leave his options open for a bit.

I do wonder if this means LAL will be more willing to offer multiple picks in a trade?  Mortgaging your future will still be an issue regardless, but at least they don't need to worry about Lebron leaving after the season.  A healthy Lebron, a healthy AD, and lets say a sane Kyrie is still a beast to handle.  The issue is they are pretty thin everywhere else.

This is so absurdly improbable as to be meaningless. It requires a cap jump to ~153M in 2023.

Grimes can’t be the hold up. If Utah wants him that bad, they have to let go of 1 or 2 picks instead. That’s the issue IMO.

I believe that UT wants Grimes not Barrett. But it isn't solely about player values. It also has a lot to do with the salaries.

Barrett is 2 years further down the road, and he'll make 11M this year and require a MASSIVE contract beginning next summer if you want to keep him. There's no value to UT in that, while they are tanking and rebuilding.

OTOH Grimes is minimum this year, then for another year, then RFA the following summer (of 2024), salaries and a timeline that is way more suited to UT's intended path.

In addition, if NY is getting Mitchell, and already has JB, there's not really a path for developing guards there. And frankly, at this point both the teams probably are trying to win at the edges of such a deal, and not leave extra on the table for lack of trying. But I would expect both Grimes and Quickley to logically be sent the other way with DM incoming.

As far as the NY picks, most of them are fairly junky, so I can't imagine the ask being lowered on that front.

This statement goes both ways and is the reason I said the hold up isn’t Grimes as the title was saying. If the picks aren’t worth much it should be fine for Utah to lower the amount of picks they’re asking for, when they hypothetically are demanding Grimes.

Now, I know Ainge isn’t the type to budge on that, he’ll want both Grimes and all the picks he can get.

But I don't think it's an either or, for such a premium star player. Ainge expects to get the young developable players (Toppin, Quickly, Grimes) plus expiring filler (Rose?), accompanied by a suitable pick package (and since NY's picks are junky, it will take quite a few to add up to any value).

I don't think Ainge will cave, even if NY's hometown writers tell him he must, and in NY the question will then become if they really want Mitchell (because you know the price, and you pay it or do without).

All I’ve been saying is there is no way the sticking point on NY getting Mitchell is not NY trying to keep Grimes like the title of the article stated. It’s got to be the amount of picks. I can’t imagine NY saying they didn’t make a deal with Ainge cause they wanted Grimes and we wouldn’t let him go. I can imagine them saying they wanted every available first we have and wouldn’t budge and that being acceptable.

Looks like Udonis Haslem is playing another year in Miami, that will put him at 20 seasons.

Seriously gonna be so pissed if he hangs on for season 21 (or more) to share or take that record from Dirk. Would be absolute BS for that to happen for a guy that has averaged less than 10 games/season over the last 6 years.

Why is it BS?  He's not nearly the player Dirk was, but if the Heat think enough of him to let him stay on as a quasi assistant coach, why not ?

I feel like you just answered your question when you called him a quasi assistant coach.

I don’t doubt at all that the Heat think very highly of him and are just letting him stay on in this role as long as he wants, but as a Mavs fan I don’t think it’s at all strange or unreasonable to be upset that, should he decide to continue in this role for 2+ more seasons, he would then tie or take Dirk’s record of most season played for just 1 team.

I mean for real, one of those seasons as a “player” he played in just 1 game for 3 minutes before being ejected.
