RE: TRADE & FA RUMORS: JC & Dejounte on the move? | DAL likes Thybulle? - DanSchwartzgan - 06-29-2022 Quote: The Mavericks and Pistons, according to multiple league sources, have engaged in talks about the Pistons absorbing one of their sizable contracts into cap space. It’s not known if the Pistons want additional compensation, which would create a holdup. Surprisingly, even after eating the NY players and taking in two lottery picks and extending the QO to Bagley yesterday and exercising their option to retain Diallo, Detroit is only at $107.8mm or so. That is really close to the Bertans number and easily enough to take in Powell plus someone like Green. Dallas should be REALLY close to the apron if the news about the cap going to $123.6mm is true. If you are on the apron and trade away Powell and Green, you are sitting at almost enough under (it would be really tight) to offer the full MLE and the Bi-Annual and stay under the apron. Some of the names out there start to make sense when you think in terms of having both. Even if you are a couple hundred grand away, nothing says you can't use $10.1mm of the MLE instead of the entire thing. Maybe Hartenstein replaces Powell and someone else gets the bi-annual. You'd also be in the neighborhood of taking in Thybulle's money as part of the deal and still being really close to the full MLE under the Apron. Maybe you don't need the entire MLE for Hartenstein (or some other MLE player). Maybe you split it between Hardy and said player and still come in nicely above the TP-MLE that other contenders are offering. Hartenstein/Thybulle (or Payton) and Dragic would be a nice recovery (not to mention Wood). However, now that we know the LT is a concern for Cuban (not saying he'll never pay it, just that he has a much higher bar for motivation there than many of us) I'm almost to the point where I'd prefer that they dump Bertans, even if it does less for this season's team than moving Powell/Green would. Just let Powell come off the books next year and be done with him. I don't want to be in this situation again with Kleber, Wood, or anyone else we think is important. No more letting contributing pieces walk because they're too expensive. If that requires a cleaner cap sheet to achieve, then that's the world we live in and I hope they quickly move towards that end. I think there would be a natural hesitation from teams to offer him big money due to his issues in the past, especially if that team is in the rebuilding stages. He seems like a guy that's probably going to get fair market value and if he likes the Mavs would want to stay as he's probably tired of being on a new team ever- year. If he plays well early I would think they would no doubt offer the 2 year extension in the first 6 months. Would look like this. 2023-2024 - $17,180,951 2024-2025 - $18,039,998 After 6 months, they can off the 4 year vet extension. 2023-2024 - $17,180,951 2024-2025 - $18,039,998 2025-2026 -$19,929,903 2026-2027 - $21,304,379 I could see the 4 year offer being considered a good deal by both sides. Just depends on how good hes actually playing. If Wood will take less money from someone else to be here, maybe. But I have my doubts. I genuinely think CW when locked in is a better player than anyone on the Mavs except for Luka. Yes, I think better than JB. He has his question marks, but the Mavs will have time to evaluate him. Yes, I think better than JB. I don't disagree, but there's a long history of him not being "locked in" consistently at all. Simultaneously, I wonder what percentage of Dallas' "make sure folks are locked in" leadership is about to walk out the door. I don't know, but I seriously wonder about that. Maybe Dinwiddie's voice will get louder this season. I think he's a much better player/person than I used to believe. What I think we can assume is that CW isn't going to do it himself if left to his own devices. He needs a locker room that pushes him.
