There are all sorts of things to potentially add to such a deal. If there is a DFS deal to Utah, it almost has to be part of something else or lead directly to something else. One way to get value out of DFS that isn’t player or pick related would be to move a body to one of Utah’s TPE’s. What if the outgoing was DFS and McGee with McGee going into an Utah TPE. The pick from Utah and Beasley go to Detroit and Bojan goes to Dallas. There is room for another small salary player to end up in Dallas. Maybe NAW. Maybe Vanderbilt. NAW is RFA this summer. If he’s not part of the LT plan, is he that valuable to Ainge. He’s getting a nice fit starter in DFS and all he’s really giving of any value is a first he’s not likely to get much from anyway. Interestingly, Detroit would add Beasley to its collection of TO players. He, Burks and Noel give them optionality on $37mm worth of contracts (not to mention the cap room they have). I think things like continuity and locker room need to matter at least a little bit. I think completely ignoring things like that can have a negative long term impact on the team and treating players like cattle can have a negative impact on players wanting to be here. I also think players like Dorian (who's contributions don't always show up in the box score) tend to be undervalued both in the market and in trades, so I am skeptical they are going to be able to get reasonable value for him anyways. It means that those three guys are desperately needed just to be a little better than average, and sending one out for a negative defender is pushing this thing in the wrong direction. We have been a top 10 offense all year thanks to mostly Luka (and Wood and Din) and right now we are near the bottom defensively. There has been a lot of talk about needing more guys who can "do basketball things", and there is truth in that, but the reality is you need to be in the top 10 in both offense and defense to be a contender, and with Luka on the team it is always going to be harder to accomplish that on defense than offense. Toronto has too many wings but needs a center. Mavs need to gey younger and saving some money could help the owner (I also assume Wood is not in long term plans for whatever reason). Phoenix GM needs to impress the new owner to keep his job, they need a wing, they have an unhappy center and have all the picks to play with. If they trade a center, they would still need one to play. Tor: Ayton (-28 mil; + 31mil) Pho: Anunoby, Wood (-31; +31 mil) Dal: Achiuwa, Young (-14; +11 mil) Phoenix distributes picks, really difficult for me to assess who should get how much. I will leave this part to the big boys in the front offices NBACentral on Twitter: "The Toronto Raptors would like to get off of OG Anunoby’s contract before they have to pay him after next season, per @Gambo987 https://t.co/XbAsx1wSqm" / Twitter RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? This is perfect for Tor and Pho, tho. RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? Collins? Bojan? No, I'm not sure he's the guy you spend your assets on. Rather have Siakam, who, by the way, is probably the only realistic trade target in the league for whom I would include Green in a trade for. I've loved Markannen's game since his draft. IMO, he's going to keep this high level. There's been a progression to his game, not just a wonder season out of nowhere. Interesting that larger expiring deals (Beasley is a TO) have been part of the THJ rumor (LeVert), the Bullock rumor (Reddish) and now this rumor. Wasn't there a rumor earlier in the year that sent Crowder off to MIL, Allen to Utah, and Vanderbilt to PHX but was nixed because PHX wanted more?? If so, then why not add Dallas in the deal and make it work with Ayton as the main piece? It's a 9 player 4 team blockbuster, but the framework is there. Rumors right now have the Bucks sending out Hill, Ibaka, and Allen as their main trade pieces and they're looking for a wing (like Crowder) and a backup big to replace Ibaka. Suns are ready to move on from Ayton, the team is listless, and Crowder has all but given up. They're also motivated to get under the luxury tax as they're about 18 mil over. Jazz want to make room for Kessler, and are also looking for shooting. DAL: Hill+Ayton+Vanderbilt PHX: Wood+DFS+Ibaka+23 FRP VIA UTA UTA: Greyson Allen+ 28 FRP DAL+3 2nds from MIL MIL: Crowder+McGee Suns reduce their payroll drastically. Jazz gets multiple draft assets (and probably the juiciest pick in the whole trade) and get a guy who fits well for them. MIL gets their role guys for the cheap package they've been looking for. Mavs replace DFS with Vanderbilt, get their center, and a backup PG in Hill. RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? Collins? Bojan? I wanted LM when he wanted to be in DAL and the Mavs didn't pursue. But I have massive concerns that Kidd would not know how to use him. And frankly that is my concern with ANY acquisition right now. I would easily pay DFS + 1st for LM. And would probably be open to more depending on what that "more" is. RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? Collins? Bojan? D'Angelo? | TDL Feb 9 - F Gump - 02-01-2023 As I see it, the 2-fold question for the Mavs at the TDL is 1 How do we turn THJ and/or Bertans - not necessarily in the same deal, of course - into something useful, or maybe just neutral (such as an expiring contract), without having to spend assets and picks to do so? 2 Or, can we shuffle the deck in some way that sends away a positive asset, and gets a different positive asset back - and in the process, maybe offload THJ or Bertans as part of the deal? The fact that all roads seem to lead to using up some or all available picks to accomplish things like that is not encouraging. But if they can find a way to make some progress WITHOUT that sort of cost .... RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? Collins? Bojan? That sounds like the starting framework of the right type of deal. But Wood would be an expiring contract and no way to do an extend-and-trade where it's at a salary and years he is expecting. I'm sure there would be other issues too, making it hard to find a win-win. Do you invest big money in a center, like Ayton's salary, in today's NBA? |
