RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? - KillerLeft - 12-09-2022 (12-09-2022, 01:36 PM)Dahlsim Wrote: The Mavs played him off the floor but then they went out and not only signed him to a nice contract but penciled him in as their starter. This was the second biggest complaint of the summer around here. Just like the biggest, most people rationalized it away very quickly. I will never, ever, EVER understand how they participated in that series and said "you know, that's a player who can help us." I was looking forward to each and every time he entered during that series because I knew he was an instant advantage for mavs ball movement and spacing. What I suspect is that their first five options fell through over the summer and then they talked themselves into the whole "three championships in four years" angle. No reason to sign that kind of player for more than a year given the cap situation. I really hope I'm wrong to even ask this, but...Wood is expiring. What if that was one of the main "draws" with him? As in, what if they wanted to acquire a guy who'd come off the books at the end of this year and just picked the one they thought would be the most help, temporarily, from among the options their package could get them? What if they never intended to extend or re-sign him under any circumstances? RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? - MarkAguirreWrathofGod - 12-09-2022 If so KL it’d be about the Mavsiest move imaginable. After all we didn’t know that Hardy would fall to where we could afford to jump back in and draft him. Not to mention we could’ve just drafted Koloko AND Hardy and never even signed McGee. So if the goal was all along an expiring contract it’s putrid asset management. Even if we get back to MLE room for 2023-2024 it doesn’t make sense as other avenues could arise to do that in the interim. So I guess we give the idiots who bungled beyond belief the Brunson situation the benefit of the doubt on this one and assume that wasn’t the plan? Giving up a 1st rounder for a year of Wood would not be something I would imagine that any team would do RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? - StepBackJay - 12-10-2022 (12-09-2022, 02:05 PM)KillerLeft Wrote: I really hope I'm wrong to even ask this, but...Wood is expiring. Cap clearing was for sure one of the reasons why they did the trade, along with clearing roster spots. I think they for sure valued him as a pretty good rotation player that had upside but he for sure wasn't a guy they were definitely interested in resigning. I am not sure what I view of Wood yet or if I see him as a long term fit. What the Mavs think it much more important. They need to get it right. While not perfect, I was fine with his play the last two games. Seems to be fitting in pretty well. The fourt quarter start was bad all around but not sure one player deserves the blame. The question is, if they don't think he is a long term fit are they willing to take on longer term salary to trade him at the TDL. If they make no effort to trade him then or sign him in the offseason it will be another sign that Cuban is concerned about money than competing. RE: TRADE & FA: Mavs interested in Nerlens? - ItsGoTime - 12-10-2022 I agree, if he’s not going to stay, trade him. I’ve said from the beginning, I, myself, don’t care if he starts, I want more minutes for him. I think he is for sure a 6moty candidate if he gets a few more mpg. He at least needs to be subbed in for some offensive possessions at the end of the game (if not be a regular player there). If they aren’t going to do that, trade him to a team that would value him for that type role. If they traded Wood, that would make the team worse, and that´s not something Cuban does ever. He can´t "lose a trade". Maybe you are able to move a package of Wood + THJ/Dinwiddie for an expiring contract, but that would mean to accept that this is a developmental year. But Cuban simply has no interest in Doncic Hardy Green DFS Wembanyama and a great cap structure. He´d rather win 44 games and get bounced in the play-in. That´s Cuban vision. I'm guessing you were pushing this same tanking crap last season at this time. Only at that time Luka was not playing at an MVP level, KP was disgruntled and oft injured, Brunson hadn't broken out and the whole team was playing like crap. We ended up in the WCF. I'm not saying that is going to happen this year, but honestly the situation looks less bleak now than it did then. With an MVP candidate you never know what can happen. I can't think of a better way to piss off Luka than to dump all of our quality veterans for limited assets, struggle the rest of the season and probably miss the playoffs but don't get anywhere near Wembanyama underwhelm in free agency (as they have done for their entire existance) and take years just to get back to where they were. There are Wood trades that could make them potentially better (like maybe the Collins trade) but it would likely require them to take on longer term salary. I'm just not sure Cuban is willing to do that. I say we pull off another masterful four 1st round picks for Porzingis and the bad THJ contract trade instead, then turn the horrible THJ contract into a horrible four year contract extension, before giving up more picks for four years of 1M per minute Bertans. That´s sure to keep Luka around. I´m sure he watched the veterans tonight thinking: I can smell championships.
