ELITE PnR player and energy guy (Great Offensive rebounder with good touch around the basket). Could return to his 6th man form here and would cost us very little (WAS is glutted with Kuzma/Hachimura/bertans/Gafford/Bryant maybe Brown and a 2nd, WAS would also get a TPE). Advanced stats are not as bad as I thought (they are actually good). Would feast with Luka by his side. Dragic/Brunson Hardaway/Bullock Doncic/Brown Finney-Smith/Harrell Porzingis/Kleber RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | DAL has $10.866M TPE - omahen - 08-27-2021 At this point I just hope Mavs use the TPE to get some assets from teams looking to dump salary. There are currently 9 teams above the tax line (fun fact: Mavs are 22nd in total salary...): - Toronto is 9th, but can get below by cutting one of non guaranteed contracts (Dekker, Watanabe, Bonga) - Boston is 8th with 6 mil over the tax line. I am sure they would gladly dump Dunn on someone - Philly is 7th but will be a tax paying team unless they trade Simmons for less salary Final 6 teams are LAL, Utah, Mil, LAC, BKN and GSW. All in win now mode so unlikely to just dump players. Still cutting guys like DeAndre Jordan, Looney, Jevon Carter and perhaps Gasol would represent a huge tax saving without really affecting their on court performance. RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | DAL has $10.866M TPE - SamStetz - 08-27-2021 Two Mavs TPE candidates, Nance and DJJ, now traded elsewhere... Other potential TPE candidates include: Lamb, Harrell, Aminu, Ibaka, Osman, T. Bryant (INJ), Saric (INJ), Rondo, DAJ, DJ Augustine, Boucher, Favors, Dunn and Bamba are biggest names that stick out to me RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | DAL has $10.866M TPE - DallasBasketball - 08-27-2021 (08-27-2021, 02:29 PM)SamStetz Wrote: Other potential TPE candidates include: Lamb, Harrell, Aminu, Ibaka, Osman, T. RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | DAL has $10.866M TPE - TXBamanut - 08-28-2021 Just tell me that we won't sign ANOTHER 5, without trading someone away, before we get a secondary creator. RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | DAL has $10.866M TPE - DanSchwartzgan - 09-18-2021 Zach Harper has his Mav's offseason report out today for the Mav's. He likes Bullock/Brown for JRich/JJ Redick as an upgrade and thinks Moses is an interesting prospect. But otherwise, not much improvement. He makes the point that the Mav's might not need much improvement because they were so rocked by missed games from key people: "First and foremost, the Dallas Mavericks were hit pretty hard by unavailability. While Luka Doncic was brilliant once again, he didn’t receive a lot of consistent help. Kristaps Porzingis missed 29 games, Maxi Kleiber missed 22, Josh Richardson missed 13 and Dorian Finney-Smith missed 12. We also saw double-digit games missed from Dwight Powell and Willie-Cauley Stein." "The only real consistent help Doncic received was from Jalen Brunson and Tim Hardaway Jr. being around nearly every night. With the absence of rotation guys, offensive mastermind Stephen Silas off to Houston and Seth Curry no longer helping space the floor, we saw the Mavericks’ historic offense from a season ago suffer. They were still a top-10 offense, but there’s a big difference between being a historic offense and being just pretty good when trying to overcome defensive issues." The other thing I thought was interesting was how he classified players. Below he calls KP/WCS/Boban and Moses our "Bigs" and Powell and Maxi our "Forwards". He makes the point that "at some point we may need to see an improvement of talent there (at the forward spot)". Whether you call Powell a Big and KP a Forward or the other way around, this plays into the idea that Dallas will play KP with another Big/Forward a good bit of the time. I personally like calling KP and Maxi the same thing because both have an outside shot and Powell, Willie, Boban and Moses do not. But, if you look at it like Harper does, then a "Forward" is easily identifiable as a position that can most easily be upgraded without robbing Peter to pay Paul. At the very least, we need a developmental guy there like we have with other positions in Moses, Green and Frank (I've really not seen enough from Terry to call him a "prospect" yet). It is hard to identify that guy on a long term basis, but I'd keep an eye on T. Young in San Antonio as a TDL short term help. The Spurs will probably sell him off to a contender at the deadline. He's a fantastic passer and good defender. The three point shooting is an issue, but if you presume he's taking Powell's minutes, you are replacing Picks with Passing and improved D. Plus, it isn't like Young sucks at Screen Assists (85th percentile). I think he'd help the D compared to Powell without hurting the O one bit (and I like Powell's impact on our offense). First of all I've got to say I'm not a JKidd fan, I think it's a huge downgrade compared to Carlisle, after the Donnie and Rick fiasco my only comment was:"the only thing that needs to happen ito make this perfect, is the Mavs giving the coaching job Kidd (not sarcastic at all!!!!) ". But I hope he proves me wrong. The Bucks were awful when he was their coach, but since then he hopefully has learned what it takes to coach a great team/great players. I mean Vogel and the Lakers were great at making adjustments in the PO, when they won in 2020. I love the addition of Kokoskov, he is great when it comes to X's and O's. And in my opinion this is the most important thing. It's nice to have a coach who is great with the team and with the players, but the small/tactical things are those that make a huge difference in the end. Igor is the one that will soften the loss of Rick's brain. Igor was great when he coached Slovenia, he had great tactics for putting the Slovenian players in favorable matchups, and in their prefered spots. He knew the strenghts and weaknesses of every player, and was great at using/hiding them. I don't know much about the other additions, guess I need to wait and see I can't forget Nico. From what I have read, seen from him, I need to say I'm a fan. Smart guy, just what the Mavs need. But I wouldn't mind Donnie. I need to say that I started to follow the Mavs closer when they drafted Luka, but since then, he wasn't afraid to make some moves, and he improved the roster. When I look the 17/18 roster with Barnes and DSJ as the main players, and where the Mavs are now, we need to thank Donnie for his work. After all he is the one who drafted Luka when he had the 5th(!!!!!!) pick. Ok now let's talk about the roster. I know I may be in the minority here, but I love what the Mavs have done here... THJ got a nice(IMO valuable) contract, and the additions of Bullock and Brown(x2) are also nice moves. Bullock will fit much better than JRich IMO. After the loss to the Clippers last playoffs everybody was saying we need a secondary creator(ok we do), but offense wasn't the biggest problem we had in that series, but it was defense. The mavs just didn't have enough big wings to throw at Kawhi,PG, and i think that we do now. Adding Big(ger) guards/wings was, that can preferably shoot, were the number 1 priority in my opinion, and the Mavs added 2 of those! Bullock will fit right in, and when it comes to Sterling Brown, I liked his hustle and attitude in the few Rockets games I have watched. He may surprise lots of people here. Let's look at the depth chart: Luka....................Brunson THJ......................Brown Bullock.................. DFS/Maxi..............DFS/Maxi KP........................WCS/Powell Maybe even Brunson+THJ from the bench for the dynamite duo, and Luka-Bullock-DFS-Maxi-KP as the starters. LUKA- The Don cements himself as the surefire top5 player in the league this season. Last offseason there wasn't much buzz about him, but this year(now), I have heard that he is putting in some serious work, and that he is very dedicated(I'm slovenian and know some of his friends and his conditioning coach). Great news, I think we'll get at least 2nd season Luka this year KP- I'm optimistic when it comes to KP for this season. This is his first healthy offseason in years and I think he'll take advantage of that. I think that his biggest problem was the fact, that he wasn't that comfortable in his body/knees, and he had a mental block. There were times where it was obvious that he was avoiding contact. I think that this gets better with a full healthy offseason. I also liked the comments(after the season was over)where he said that he needs to work and adjust his game to the way it's played and the way the Mavs play. I don't think the best way to use KP is to give him the ball and let him create for him(in the post, at the 3pt line). A Capella type of role, where he needs to set screens and roll/pop, and feeding him near the basket,... The PnR/PnP with KP and Luka was good/great last year, and I think it has much more potential. Maybe adding some short roll and then playing from the elbow and so on... The Mavs didn't realy use this that much last year... THJ- I'm happy that he choose to stay. Looks like he really likes Dallas. IMO he added to his game last season, and I think we'll see some improvement this year also. I don't get the critisism for his defense(some people saying he's the worst defender out there ), he's not a great defender, but also not the worst He'll surprise some people this year. BRUNSON- I know that he wasn't great in the PO's, but he was good/great in the regular season, and it looks like to me, that people forget that. The rest comes later RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | DAL has $10.866M TPE - omahen - 10-03-2021 Since we are collecting all NY players, why not another move with them. Burke and Terry for Knox, add money or a SRP if you need to. Mavs get a look at a dissapointing player, clear roster spot and 2022 money. https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1444690435545387011 RE: ROSTER TALK: cap set to $112.414M | DAL has $10.866M TPE - Chicagojk - 10-08-2021 Latest article from Hollinger at the Athletic on the 2018 draft class and extensions using his formula using several different factors: His BORD$ projection, age and minutes projectsion and mapping future salary cap projections, etc. He has Brunson at 3 years for 57 million. And the universe of a rising cap. Feels like just a few years ago 20m was a max or near max contract. Now it is closer to average starter salary. Nearly 60 players already have guaranteed contracts in the 20+ million range for the next season. Guess that's what it takes for talent in this league. But I think he is more of an undersized PF. I thinkche fits really well with KP at Center. Maybe he is the type of player the Mavs need on the roster. With four centers there is a bit of a hole at 3rd PF. I could see him getting called up on nights when KP rests. Otherwise, G-League all-star on a two-way is perfectly fine for an undrafted guy. I think the bench has three locks in Maxi, Bullock and Brunson. I'll be interested to see who the first center off the bench will be opening night, a month from now and in April. I've said for a while the plan is probably for cost-controlled Moses to make Willie unnecessary next season. Maybe it happens sooner. I think Sterling, Green and Frank will compete for backup two minutes. Someone needs to step up as the bench needs some shot creation outside of Brunson. As rotations tighten those minutes will evaporate. But Bullock, Hardaway and Brunson playing more minutes doesn't solve the bench creation issue. Brunson, Maxi, Bullock, some center and one of the colors still feels light to me. Good D, but not enough scoring. As I said in the game one thread, I think Kidd solves this by leaving THJ out there as the last starter to sit and brings Luka back as the first starter to return reducing the time we have a pure bench lineup on the floor. |
