I think the answer is right in front of us here.

We all know about the strong lineup data on the KP/DP duo from the 2019-2020 season.

I totally agree that this could be the thinking, but:

We know KP has complained about being a spacer (sometimes by name and other times referring to himself as a “decoy”). If Powell/Luka are the main foundation of the offense again, that is exactly what KP will be.

We know KP has said he prefers to play the 5 on offense because he likes to be in “trail position.” He likes those early opportunities to play off of Luka in secondary transition, in other words, also known as “early in the clock 26-ft 3’s”.

We know that Kidd has said he wants to get back to what KP was doing in NY “when he was having fun.” To me, this means KP having the ball in his hands, either in the low post or face-up in the extended free throw line areas. What’s Powell doing while this is happening, standing in the corner? Who would guard him there? If he’s standing in the dunker spot on the other side, where’s the space for KP to do anything?

Idk…I get where you’re coming from, and it’s kind of what the tea leaves are whispering to me, too, but I see a ton of conflicting info if this is the case.

THJ - $16 million

Bullock - $10 million
Brown - Just change from BAE to Room Exception

So that leaves about $6 million in room. I think the Mavs would need to clear about $9 million to get Holmes.

Mavs haven't paid the luxury tax in a LONG time. Remains to be seen if they will in the Luka-era.

If that. Might only need $5M more.

I guess the extreme option would be to stretch-waive Powell.

I remember a report a while back saying that Dallas balked at sending WCS and Powell. Why would they need to send both.  That report made me think something other than just Dragic was in play.

Are we sure they would have $6 million in space? I thought they had $30.5 million with WCS. Subtract $26 and you’d be left with $4.5 million. Trade WCS and Burke and you have $11.5 million. I believe that is a higher starting salary than what Sac can offer.

RE: MAVS NEWS: DAL has $10.866M TPE | DAL wants Dragic as free agent not trade - Scott41theMavs - 08-04-2021

This could turn into a far better offseason if the Mavs find some way to acquire Holmes and/or Jackson and/or Dragic. And of course it's an A if KP is outgoing.

A decade. An argument can be made that Cuban IS cheap already, and has been for a long, long time.

As you say, it remains to be seen whether this is the case since there is juuuust enough logic to the "it hasn't made since to spend" for that length of time to give that theory credibility.

They (happily) committed nearly $200M to this frontcourt with extensions.

They value payroll hierarchy a lot. Also you can’t play 5 out all the time with KP. The offense gets stale, that’s probably the conclusion after last year. And when we assume KP can’t roll to basket for whatever reasons (skill and health are both factors Imo) then, well, you’ve once again arrived at DP being the solution.

I really think this is what is being planned here. It’s probably also the easy option for Nico to fall back on. Playing it safe with a large chunk of the old roster and some low risk additions.

If things go south he’ll won’t have dug himself a hole with expensive contracts and it’s pretty easy to point towards the bad asset base and contracts he was dealt with.

Heck he can easily sacrifice Kidd, too, without taking damage as he was mostly the guy Cuban and hus group of advisors wanted here immediately after RC was gone.

Of course, the whole issue with dumping salary for Holmes and/or Jackson is, how much does it cost us?

And of course the worst-case scenario is dumping contracts with assets so that we can sign... KO. Ugh.

Yeah, I'm not really disagreeing with you. I'm just pointing out that it doesn't seem like a plan Porzingis will like. If this is the case, I'm not sure it bodes well for the idea that KP will be a happy camper (who's effective again) this season.

Dude, it would solve so many problems if he and Luka could just play off of each other. Wouldn't solve the defensive issues, but at least there would be somewhat of a reason to attempt to work around them.
