I ask because MFR's speculation about "same money" is nonsensical if they're talking about a Lakers' NTMLE, when the Mavs have no intention (as everyone but RTG has noted) of using the NTMLE on Klay, but rather an SnT.
In any event, yay, the Mavs are in a contract bidding war for a guy whom I really don't want them to overpay.

Just to clarify things in this tweet, the Lakers can only get to the MLE if Lebron decides to do a 16 mil discount this year. He could do a 1+1 deal, and just sign for more money next year. But at his age that's risky as hell. If he doesn't do that risk, he could do that 3 year deal that's been floated over and over but it will result in about 49 mil paycut to give the Lakers the MLE this year.
Secondly, taxes in California are insane. Klay's take home will be probably less than 5 mil. In Texas it'd be closer to 8.5 mil.
But I don't disagree that the allure of the Lakers is still a thing. Even if they aren't close to competing for a ring.

Russell is making 18.7 mil this year on a 1 year expiring.
If you're the Warriors, would you rather have D'Lo on a 1 year expiring deal or Josh Green locked up for 3?
If you're Klay would you rather go to the Lakers or the Mavericks?
Truthfully I'm fine either way. I was excited that the Mavs could've potentially added him on the cheap. I have no interest in getting into a bidding war with the Lakers of all franchise cause they are not a serious team at all.

I ain't bummed at all. I want Klay bad. I've defended the idea ardently. But for the first time since 2011 the Mavericks are in a position of strength and aren't in a desperate need for Klay
If Lebron wants to take a paycut so the Lakers 1 big move will be Klay Thompson. Ok. Go right ahead. They'll still be a play in team.

The main goals for this summer was to:
1) Move off of Timmy's deal to open up the MLE
2) Try and keep the asset chest relatively filled
3) keep DJJ at a reasonable deal
So far they've moved off of THJ's contract in a masterful trade WHILE getting a great prospect in Grimes. And it looks like DJJ will be back here for the MLE.
Summer complete.

Klay next team odds removed from Bovada. Before taken down he was favored to go to Dallas, then Orlando, Warriors were third and Lakers fourth.
Imo he goes to Dallas in sign and trade but we will see. His best chance to win is Dallas out of those four teams.

With the THJ trade still open, you can pair a salary going to Denver with the THJ outgoing. So, Green to Denver (or anywhere really), THJ to Detroit and Grimes/KCP to Dallas. Right now the presumption is Grimes goes into an old TPE (which hard-caps us at the first apron). But, we don't have to do it that way. If we aren't worried about keeping DJJ (because he's being steered by his new agent to LAL to take the money Lebron is 'sacrificing'), then we can offer KCP (or Thompson or Tobias or any S&T) about $21.5mm with Green outgoing in the same deal as THJ. The $21mm limit is because of the hard cap because those guys are S&T's
BTW, if the incoming isn't a S&T and you didn't put Grimes into an old TPE and you didn't use the NT MLE on anyone and you've not taken back more than you've sent out, you've not hard-capped yourself. In that case the spending limit math is THJ/Green minus Grimes...about $24.5mm. You also get to spend the $5.2mm since you haven't broken any of the first apron hard cap rules. You are "spending all of the money" as Nico says. It doesn't have to be Green. You can get to Bogdan Bogdanovic money simply by sending Hardy and Powell to Atlanta. Then, not only have you "spent all the money", but you've kept #7 (Green) and #8 (Maxi).
All of this is predicated on the idea that LAL gets DJJ. That changes a bunch of what we've presumed the last few days.

The Mavs have lost weight, had some collagen injected into their lips, and purchased an entire new wardrobe, yes.
The Lakers can roll out of bed, put on some sweatpants and a hoodie, and they are still Margot Robbie. Just the way it is.
