Half the people here think Kleber sucks and has a horrible contract (I am way not one of them) and that contract goes away. Maybe part of why I'm ok with this is that I'm just done with Green. I have finally lost faith. I flatly don't see a need for him on the team, now that Grimes is in the mix.
Well, I don't think Kleber sucks and he does provide a 5-out option at Center... but I think his main position as backup PF is the next one that needs improving. If PJW gets injured during the business end of the season, it might be the end of this team's chances at contending... that's how important he has been at PF.
I feel the same as you about Green, but I don't think it's imperative to move him immediately. I'm happy with the trade for Grimes but we need to see how healthy he will be. So keeping Green is a nice luxury, and the Mavs FO could wait until a good or better opportunity to upgrade the team's needs is available.

Taking in Klay would only make Kidd lazy. Why? They could retain the same strategies and not change a thing and they could still win games in the regular season with Klay taking advantage of the space he has with Luka and Kyrie.
IMHO, now that the Mavs have taken out the bin and got something in return (Grimes), all the Mavs would need would be:
1. Sign DJJ
2. Internal development of players (shooting)
3. Get a couple of coaches that specializes in Offense.
I'm not opposed to Klay as a Mav, but not at expense of DJJ and even Maxi.
IMHO, the Mavs should hold on to Maxi until such time Omax is ready, or there's a true and better replacement out there.
Pulling him out and not replacing him with someone similar is going to be a loss for the Mavs.
I'm looking at Jalen Smith if Maxi has to go. Obviously not the same player as Jalen Smith is less mobile and more of a 5 than a 4. He may not be as good as Maxi but he solidifies the big men lineup. He'd be the third string C and the backup at 4.
About Green, I still like Green and it would be luxury to have both Grimes and Green in one team similar to what the Mavs have with their C slot. But if Klay comes in without DJJ, you'd be relying on Grimes as the sole POA defender. That's not good.

Based on all the (beloved
) advanced metrics Thompson was a worse player than CP3, Saric, Podziemski, Jackson-Davis and about 7th to 10th best on the team. All you need to do is think this through logically.
Klay Thompson is an all-time Warriors legend, so they just won´t let him walk for nothing over a dollar here or there. They must be very far apart on their evaluation and what Thompson can still contribute.
Klay Thompson has $266M in career earnings, so it´s not a DJJ "starving" situation either. Orlando allegedly offers him 50/2. He is 35 years old coming off torn achilles and ACL. Yet he´s demanding a 3rd year. That tells you everything about where his head is at and what he thinks about the ability of his body to hold up.
Nobody is offering him the 3rd year, so why should we? Does he really wants to be here and have the 3rd year!? Good. Here is 42/3 instead of 50/2. Take that.
It´s absolutely insane that some people want to give 75/3 to Klay, but think Simons at 52/2 is grossly overpaid.

1 I don't understand the talk about Kennard. It feels irrelevant. I see the desirability of him, but no path to get him, so he's not really an alternative to whatever else is on the table.

That's not a realistic objection, since his injuries essentially ended several YEARS ago. We already have a huge sample to consider.
He came back in the last GS title year, missing the first 38 games, and since then it has looked like this...
21-22 Regular season - 32 of 44 played, 30 mpg. Postseason - 22 of 22 played, 36 mpg.
22-23 Regular season - 69 of 82 played (none of the missed games were consecutive, so the "load management" thing in play), 33 mpg. Postseason - 13 of 13 played, 36 mpg.
23-24 Regular season - 77 of 82 played, 30 mpg

June 28th, 2024 - the day we were all joined in blissful, harmonious agreement that the Dallas Mavericks were in a good place and having a good off-season. It only lasted one day. One glorious, happy day. So fleeting, as most great moments are.
I will always remember the day of the Tim Hardaway Jr/Quentin Grimes trade, and would like to suggest that we make it a board holiday. "The day of Agreement" has a nice ring to it, but I'm open to workshopping the name a bit. What's important is that we commemorate this occasion when all of we, the amateur GM's, came together not to waste our lives arguing, but to rejoice in the certain knowledge that our team had finally found a path to follow that was wonderful and true.
I think LukaMVP found a way to be grumpy about that deal, but we'll omit that from the annual retelling, as all great historians do with some details.
June 28th, 2024 - we have never seen your like before in the community, and might never again.

By rule, it has to be a 3-year deal to be a legal sign and trade. Years two and three don't have to be fully guaranteed, however.

We're worried about injury history here but are targeting Brogdon?
Brogdon has missed on average 28 games a year. For comparison:

Kristaps Porzingis- 31 games
Anthony Davis- 21 games
Gordon Hayward- 22 games
Zion Williamson- 45 games
Kawhi Leonard- 28 games
Joel Embiid- 39 games.
Brogdon is on the same level of fragility as Kawhi and KP. He is more fragile than Hayward, and AD.

Pretty good job by his agent making sure the Murray deal was made before agreeing to this. Nobody wants to see their client end up in Atlanta.

Jalen Smith has been mentioned more than once, but ...
1 There's no apparent path to get him.
2 The 5.4M salary looks like a bargain, except that's the deal he didn't want, and declined. No idea how much more it might take. (If he wants to take a minimum, the Mavs might have an opening, but I doubt that's his plan.)
3 His counting numbers and percentages look good, but I think they are deceptive. Not sure what he lacks, because I don't watch Indy. I do know that despite the good numbers, he only gets 17-18 mpg, and he was not playable in the playoffs for Indy (only 42 total minutes in the Pacers 17 games). That inability to get much of a role speaks volumes to me.

Klay at that 21 mil number allows us to retain DJJ at the full MLE, just barely. Perhaps there is a scenario where DJJ actually signs for 10mil instead of 12.8, which gives us even more cushion before the 1st apron. Lineup is:

Playing with the numbers:
Can we get DJJ to sign for 2 years and 20 million? That gets him a starting salary of $9.756098 million
Then can we get Klay to go for 4/79.12 with a starting salary of 18.4 million
Between those 2 moves you save 6 million off of the totals SH proposed.
Bite the bullet and give Advija the 14th roster slot at the rookie minimum which saves roughly 933k.
Those 3 moves would save roughly $7.106891 off the proposed totals. Why that number?
That is a number allows the trade to acquire Klay to be Green and Powell (not Kleber), which would conceivably make the deal easier on GSW (or even the Clipps) to work into their own hard cap situations.
My numbers with a 14 man roster consisting of Morris and one additional vet minimum player:
Total Salary: 176,994,669
1st Apron Space: 1,660,331
You could create a bit more space if we found another rookie minimum to sign instead of a veteran minimum, for the 13/14 slots. The second of which would be vital to be non-guaranteed so that a (veteran) player could be signed in season without losing more dead money space.
