RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - RoyTarpleysGhost - 06-28-2024 I don’t understand how. He’s so pissed at the Warriors he’ll sign a MLE here? Stein even says he doesn’t know if the Warriors will do a sign and trade. Can this be a 3 way with Paul George to Warriors? RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - YaBoyAplus - 06-28-2024 Someone explain to me... If we are far enough under the apron to offer the full MLE now to DJJ once FA opens. Why can't we do that then trade Maxi + green + w/e else filler for a player we want at a = cap hit RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - Tyler - 06-28-2024 We can. The Warriors just have to agree to the deal. My prediction is that it becomes a big 3-way trade with Paul George ending up in Golden State. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - The Jom - 06-28-2024 I’m with Hero. Sign me up for Klay. No. Bare with me because I'm going to try and piece together every rumor we've seen. Stein and others mentioned Klay as a possible target for the Mavs as early as April 15th https://twitter.com/TheAthletic/status/1780617360770252820 Then earlier this week we hear that Klay is of interest of the Mavs from Stein. Now to today. It opens with CP3 and the Warriors pushing back their option date. https://x.com/esidery/status/1806737061665194390?s=46&t=Fmdr94oXagcEyy75KJqaFg Then like 2 hours later we see that Westbrook is opting out of his contract and that the Clippers are content with that as they have their eyes set elsewhere (weird right?) https://x.com/thedunkcentral/status/1806783958392459565?s=46&t=Fmdr94oXagcEyy75KJqaFg THEN like an hour later we hear the Warriors reporter start throwing out PG trades and the hangup is that the Warriors aren't keen on including Kuminga in any deal. https://x.com/AndyJPuente/status/1806794848332304809 And then literally a little while later we see how the Warriors called the Canadian national team to bar Wiggins from competing this summer all of a sudden. The Warriors beat writer says its because Wiggins is injured. The director of the Canadian Mens team says Wiggins was fine and that he was working out with them like normal and "this seems like the team's decision to hold him out" VERY weird?!! https://x.com/heyhalima/status/1806828651905692019?s=46&t=Ofn9ihgBPdBFQJpnkEDS0A And now we have Klay to Mav rumors heating up even more! My take? Paul George to the Warriors is done. The package is going to be centered around CP3+Wiggins and because of that Klay is ready to come to Dallas. Klay could also be involved in this PG13 deal as the Mavs act as a 3rd team and Klay is SnT to us. Mavs send Green to the Warriors. Maybe Maxi to the Clippers. ![]() RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - KillerLeft - 06-28-2024 Ok, for starters, people who think Klay wouldn't help are in denial. This is a three-time champion who will provide spacing the likes of which Luka/Kyrie haven't had yet. He's a good add, if you ignore the circumstances. But, the circumstances matter. Make no mistake, he's not wanting to come here to be the 6th man. This is DJJ's job we're talking about. Ok, but...does that mean DJJ isn't on the team? I'm not sure I'm into that idea at all. It might mean that Dallas sees the offensive struggles from the finals as such a problem that they're willing to get weird with this and turn their back on what got them there a little in the name of attacking what will be most teams' approach to defending them next year. I don't love that, but if that's the case, we have to remember that Luka/Kyrie have doubtlessly signed off on it. It might mean, combined with the representation change, that they already know DJJ is going elsewhere and view Klay as the best possible solution. They do have Grimes to play POA defense now, but I think it's less impactful if playing him in crunch time means benching either your new big-name shooter (Klay) or PJ Washington, the other plus defender. That, to me, would be more of what never works: specialists. The best lineup the Mavs can play needs to be the best lineup on both ends of the court. It might mean that DJJ is taking way, way less money than we think and they've already got that in the bag. This might be a smoke screen from either side. Klay to scare the Warriors or Orlando into a better offer, or maybe even Dallas to scare DJJ into accepting a lesser offer. It might mean that Jerami Grant, the only guy I would've even considered viewing as an "instead of" DJJ target, is now not really even being sold. Completely off the market. I guess my question is this: how badly does Klay want to play here? I think I know the answer to this before I ask it, but would he take the MLE for 3 years? Is the extra year and promise to start on a team he perceives as enough of a contender to save some face worth that type of haircut? Because, if this really is "instead of" DJJ, I'm kind of no longer comfortable moving Josh Green, tbqh. Kind of tough to put these pieces together logically for me at the moment, though I am intrigued by Klay a little. Why can't we do that then trade Maxi + green + w/e else filler for a player we want at a = cap hit If we use the regular MLE, the Mavs are hard capped at the teams total roster salary of 178.6. No matter what we cannot cross that number. So there is nothing stopping us from using Green+Maxi for someone, as long as they stay under that 178.6. Right now if the Mavs signed DJJ to that full MLE, they'd have about 1.7mil of space before that 178.6 number comes into play. Green+Maxi make roughly ~25 mil. Realistically they can get someone up to ~22 mil in such a case and be safe from the 1st apron hard cap (because we have to account for minimum roster spots worth ~2mil each) If they add Powell, add 2 mill to that number they can trade for (4mil-2mil vet min charge for the replacement for Powell). Etc. I could see it. Can they get the salary down enough to keep DJJ though? It depends on the number Klay signs for. I've been floating around a 4 year 92 mil deal. Why that number? Well it satisfies the rumored length Klay is looking for at 3+ years. Its close to 100mil overall in terms of salary, which is similar to what Green signed last year. And most importantly, the number starts right around 21.4 mil. If the Mavs sent out Green+Maxi, then the roster is as follows: Player Salary Notes 1 Doncic 43,031,940 2 Irving 41,000,000 ULTBE $1,000,000 3 Klay Thompson 21,473,989 4 PJ Washington 15,500,000 ULTBE $500,000 5 Gafford 13,394,160 6 Grimes 4,296,682 7 Vet min guy 2,093,637 8 Lively 5,014,560 9 Powell 4,000,000 10 Exum 3,150,000 Team Option 6/28 11 Omax 2,870,400 12 Vet min guy 2,093,637 13 Hardy 2,019,699 NG 14 Morris 2,093,637 15 DJJ 12,859,000 Dead 2,208,856 McGee Total Salary 178,600,197 Space Under/(Over) First Apron 178,655,000 54,803 Second Apron 189,486,000 10,885,803 Klay at that 21 mil number allows us to retain DJJ at the full MLE, just barely. Perhaps there is a scenario where DJJ actually signs for 10mil instead of 12.8, which gives us even more cushion before the 1st apron. Lineup is: Luka/Exum/vet min guy? Kyrie/Grimes/Hardy Klay/DJJ/vet min guy? PJ/Omax/Morris Lively/Gafford/Powell RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - KillerLeft - 06-28-2024 (06-28-2024, 09:48 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: My take? FWIW, I am starting to see smoke out there that Paul George to GS is a done deal. This is all very, very interesting. I hope Dallas isn't overthinking things a bit. They have the world by the balls right now. There are ways in which Klay makes sense, but it has to be on the right terms, so I hope it's not his shiny name that's driving this bus. All these teams I thought couldn’t do anything due to their cap situation would magically add good players. Now it might be us? How’d we get here? RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - KillerLeft - 06-28-2024 (06-28-2024, 10:05 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: Klay at that 21 mil number allows us to retain DJJ at the full MLE, just barely. Klay would have to be ok sitting for the last 5 minutes in games where that was needed, and I'd be very upfront about that with him from jump street. I can easily see Jones signing for $10 M. Easily. Puts a ton of pressure on O-Max to bring something to the table in year 2, but maybe they think he's ready. I think in reality you'd see a lot of Klay/DJJ playing together when PJ sits, which isn't ideal from a size POV, but that wouldn't bother me much at all. At least, not temporarily. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - SleepingHero - 06-28-2024 Mavs Film Room (@MavsFilmRoom) Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson are both Anta Athletes. With Kyrie being Chief Creative Officer of Anta, I wonder what his involvement is in the Mavs' efforts to recruit Klay to Dallas. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - SkenfromLMF - 06-28-2024 I will go another route… Mavs are possibly feeding Stein the Klay rumors in order to get Portland off their ask for Grant. Right now the price match is Green, Maxi, and Powell. So the cost is in the picks, OR rookie non-guaranteed salary Dallas would need in return to keep from going over the hard cap due to salary holds. OR Portland doesn’t want to take all 4 ballast pieces, and Dallas is feigning interest in options. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - RoyTarpleysGhost - 06-28-2024 We wont know until Sunday right? Otherwise it would be tampering. There is always a chance the vet min guy we sign is actually a mobile 4. Robert Covington is available. Nic Batum is available. But I agree, I'd be pretty ecstatic opening up a real consistent role for OMax. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - Scott41theMavs - 06-28-2024 Jason Terry is the only one truly sane person in this thread. Klay for DJJ (as the practical result of this acquisition) is objectively a step backwards. Too many people thinking Klay is 2015 Klay, when he is not. I suppose that's better than the doofuses out there (not here on the board, thank goodness) who still view Wiggins as a decent Mavs trade target. Klay is neither offensively nor defensively what he was in 2015, period. If it's a good idea to flush exorbitant money on Klay freaking Thompson in 2024 - way the hell past the man's prime - why don't we trade for CP3? How about getting Blake Griffin out of retirement? Why not just go all the way and go get MJ? Mark my words - if the Mavs are stupid enough to throw money out the window (anything more than $5 mil a year is ridiculous, much less $20 per year) for a multiyear deal for Klay Thompson, by the time this coming season is over, that contract will be as hated by the entirety of the Mavs fanbase as the worst contract in franchise history, worse than THJ, Wes, Chandler Parsons, and all of Powell's deals put together. He will be unplayable in terms of actually trying to win games by the end of this coming season. Go ahead and pin this post, especially if the Mavs nuke the Luka era by making such a suicidal move. Goodness gracious, I bet that if there were some way to scientifically quantify subjective sports opinions and feelings, I'll bet I abhor this idea worse than Kamm hated trading for Kyrie. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:Stein:Strong Mutual Interest Klay+DAL|DJJ Represented By Klutch - KillerLeft - 06-28-2024 (06-28-2024, 10:11 PM)SkenfromLMF Wrote: I will go another route… I don't know, man. I'd be fine with that, obviously, and might even prefer it. But these rumors that were easily dismissed hours ago are starting to be taken more seriously by a lot of people. Windhorst was making a point earlier on one of those stupid shows that GSW didn't seem to care about Klay and LAC didn't seem to care about Paul George. The implication was that something was already done with George going to GS, though he didn't say it. I think SH's dot-connecting, that this knowledge has motivated Klay to get serious about choosing his next gig, makes all the sense in the world, as does the idea that GS moved Chris Paul's date back in an effort to try to help him land somewhere better than Orlando. They kind of owe him that much, right? I'm starting to be able to see it. |
