FO should get on the phone for Bogdan right about now. Perfect fit.

Honestly, I think I might agree with you.

Green, Hardy and NO PICKS for Bogdan Bogdanovic, and I'm in. Would have to be NO PICKS for me, but I think maybe that's not a deal-breaker when you combine those two.

Pelicans still have Brandon Ingram to trade. Still need a center?

I like Herb Jones and Trey Murphy.

Dejounte seems like a knucklehead that doesn’t play D any more but he has the tools to be a #2 to Zion I guess.

I dunno. Meh

Yeah, that's where you wonder what the cost is.  If they want a first, I dunno.  Maybe two seconds.

Ingram will be moved. Before we even start down that road, I don't think he's the guy, personally. One of the biggest ball-stoppers I've ever seen, and I have regularly defended Hardaway for the better part of a decade.

Jones and Murphy will not be, I don't think. Obviously, I'm a fan of both.

If you are signing DJJ at big MLE, you're way short on room for that. You're limited to 8.9 for DJJ.

RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: Stein: Mavs Trying For Klay Thompson | Hawks Fire Sale - Scott41theMavs - 06-28-2024

So, option A: 1) Trade Green, Kleber, Hardy, and 31 for Cam Johnson, 2) re-sign DJJ.

Luka/Exum
Kyrie/Grimes
Johnson/DJJ
PJ/the two threes platooning
Lively/Gafford

Or Option B
1) trade Maxi/Green/Powell/31 for Grant 2) somehow re-sign DJJ in spite of the financial problems the Grant trade creates
Luka/Exum
Kyrie/Grimes
DJJ/PJ
Grant/PJ
Lively/Gafford

Or option C
1) Trade PJ/Kleber for Grant, 2) trade Green/Gafford for Johnson, 3) re-sign DJJ, 4) try to fill out the now-depleted frontcourt with vet min players

Luka/Exum/Hardy
Kyrie/Grimes
Johnson/DJJ
Grant/DJJ
Lively/?

What say ye?

Never mind regarding Cam Johnson - made use of my friend Google, and he's not a POA defender. Only adequate. By Killer's reasoning, you couldn't use him as a starter on the Mavs, which takes away the point of getting him. I also question what I said earlier about his cost if that's the case. Strange that I remembered him being such a good defender. Still a nice player, but overpaid.

I think $8.9 M is actually a pretty plausible number, but point taken.

I think the best way to think of this is there is a pool of funds…depending on the outgoing contracts and the size of the roster…with which you pay for DJJ and a S&T FA.

It does seem that Stein has been talking A LOT about UFA’s KCP and Thompson.  Could that just be agents trying to influence teams like Orlando to pony up?  Could that be the Mav’s feeding Stein to influence a team with Player X under contract to strike the deal Nico has proposed (because Dallas has other options)?  Hard to know.

One thing about these apron rules…the world of possibilities shrinks and the leverage of other options is more difficult to come by.  All we have to do is have a spreadsheet (and a FG to help us use the right numbers) and we can narrow down the possibilities quickly.  Imagine how easy it is for someone who does this full time.

Pelicans aren't dealing two wings with athleticism, good defensive metrics, and shot making ability. That's what everyone wants. Besides, I would think they'll remain part of their core.

You'd be signing him to come off the bench, or you'd be signing him to make your team worse (tanking, or because you have no choice but to replace a guy who walked like DJJ if he does that). And he may not even be 8-man rotation worthy at this point of his career.

If they sign Klay for more than $12 mil per, that's as bad as the Wes Matthews Monty Haul deal. In that event, they should have just kept THJ, and we're all glad they didn't do that, so basketball gods, please please please save the Mavs from getting Klay.

I agree with your idea that Klay isn't as good as he once was. But I think he's still a very good player, and would be a good get at the right price.

To me that "right price" is in the vicinity of what SH posted earlier --- a starting salary in the low 20's (or less), with very limited (or no) draft capital, and I can live with the Green-Kleber package he proposed. Given his age and injury history, I would look for a 3+1 (TO) structure, to offset some of the risk.

This is the version of Klay Thompson you will be getting if you sign him now - dont do it!

Marc Stein (@TheSteinLine)
As he prepares to enter free agency after a hugely successful debut season in Dallas, Derrick Jones Jr. has made an agency move is now represented by Rich Paul's Klutch Sports, league sources say.

This makes my eyebrows raise.

DLive is a Klutch client and Hardy is a Klutch client.

doubt it would work defensively with Klay as a starter. he is still an elite shooter and although he used to be an excellent perimeter defender, his defensive game only belonged to the previous decade when he hadn't suffered the injuries. would be a good choice for MLE though.

That's an insanely expensive contract for Klay at this point in his career. It's a move I would attribute such an imbecilic move from the old regime, not the current.

RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: Stein: Mavs Trying For Klay| DJJ Now Represented By Klutch - LukaMVP - 06-28-2024

only the warriors would pay him anything more than 20m/y but a good part of the money would be paid for his past contributions to the team. Klay as the player he currently is isn't worth that much apparently.

I'm not sure Ingram lands the NO PElicans a haul. Would you offer Green, Kleber, Hardy, Powell and 2025 unprotected and getting the 2030 pick swap more in the mix?

Yes, this prices the Mavs out of DJJ, but after adding two minimums, the team is still just barely under the 1st apron.
