Just saw this. Some reasons why I think this is a different situation
- Mavs are trying to stay under the 1st apron. Nuggets are trying to avoid the 2nd apron
- KCP's market is totally different to DJJ's.
- KCP is a better more attractive player than DJJ
- KCP is more integral to what the Nuggets do than what DJJ is for the Mavs (as in, it's easier to replace DJJ for the Mavs given the financial situations and fit than it will be for the Nuggets to replace KCP)
The only similarity is that both the Mavs and Nuggets are trying to retain their own players and have to carve out space to do so.
Mavs just need to drop THJ to get to DJJ's number. But they could also pretty easily drop Green or Maxi as well. Nuggets have already dropped Jackson for free. KCP has supposedly already gotten offers for ~25mil AAV. Who else do the Nuggets cut to get to lets say 23 mil for KCP while staying under the 2nd Apron and filling out their roster?

That's why I don't think these situations are similar at all and why it's pretty reasonable to say that Denver is more desperate than Dallas.

I kind of see two paths and given the rumors, they apparently see them also. One is basically status quo. Move THJ, keep DJJ and move on. Right now the Shamet version of this seems most likely. You aren't asking Washington to eat $16mm, just the spread between Shamet and THJ (assuming they were going to keep Shamet). You only have to guarantee enough to trade match and you can S/W that if you wish for under $3mm per year. Plenty of room at that point for DJJ.
The other deal is what you are mentioning. Deal one or two of our guys for a bigger salary guy. The guy in question needs to be good enough that he upgrades DJJ because you won't be able to keep him if he won't take the $5.2mm exception. The interest in KCP is an example of this. Hunter and Wiggins are imperfect versions of this. Other names under about $27mm-$28mm include Simons, Draymond, Kuzma, Brown, Smart, Keldon, Sexton, Barnes, Isaac, Bogdanovic (ATL) and any free agent who might sign in this range (Thompson, Tobias, DeRozan and Trent Jr. besides KCP).
There never was a deadline around the draft. Most of these deals needed to wait until July to be executed anyway. The only benefit of a draft day deal would have been to soften the impact of some future outgoing asset by pairing it with an incoming asset in the late first or early second.

Similar to KCP. S&T hard caps you at the first apron. You get to set the salary for Thompson based on what GS is willing to take back.

I doubt GS would be willing to take anything back, at least not what Mavs have to offer in terms of serious salary. But they might do Thompson a solid and demand minimal (anything?) for their trouble, as long as they are not getting unwanted salary back.
Their goal is to stay under the second apron and they still have the CP3 contract to move for an upgrade.

Very interesting, but I can understand. I don't think KCP is worth anywhere near 25 mil. Also, that rumored deal is supposed to be for just 2 years. Perhaps Denver offers something like 70/4 and a future with a serious contender.
Still, if KCP walks, Denver will have a very difficult time replacing him. I don't think Braun is anywhere near his level

Green+Tim combine for 28.8M. Mavs do a declining deal and give Klay 2/50 or 3/75. Something in that neighborhood. Klay turned down a 2 year deal from GS at a reported big discount. He made $43M last year so what’s a big discount?

Getting the 2nd best 3pt shooter of all time does interest me a lot yes.
I know Klay has lost a step compared to what he was, but even in his worst season of the past 12 years, he still averaged 18ppg on 39% from 3. Him being spoonfed set 3s from Luka will be incredible.

I am actually surprised Mavs seem to be interested in him (or at least some betting sites think so). Is he really that much better/different than THJ at this stage of his career ? I don't think we can start him and he would still be very expensive to come from the bench.
If I would be interested in him, I would try to think more in terms of 80/4 for THJ/Green (going to a third team), which would give reasonable space to resign DJJ.

Don't think you can start him next to Luka and Kyrie. Is he willing to play a bench role?

I don't think Klay comes here to sit on the bench. So does that mean DJJ is moved to the bench and if so, does that make us better? Klay as the 6th man would be amazing, but I don't see him leaving GS to be a 6th man elsewhere.

Good trade without giving up too much assets with the first win of getting a usable player back and the second win of bringing us in position to resign DJJ. That’s well worth it for me.
