RE: MAVS NEWS: - F Gump - 06-24-2025 (06-24-2025, 01:15 PM)DallasMaverick Wrote: I'll bet they extend the deadline, to allow for other signings, trades, and negotiations. Maybe. But I'm not sure I see why. 1 Isn't an opt out needed for the Mavs to have more workable numbers this year, no matter what? (So what's to decide?) 2 Can't they already have figured out what numbers they are going to do, and the structure, with perhaps some if/then choices for later? 3 They really can't extend it far enough to make much difference - only to Sunday. He can see the draft and whatever happens in that general time frame. But Kyrie can't delay it to get a peek at who Mavs are going to get in free agency (if anyone), trades in free agency time, etc. The only reason to delay is that he MIGHT want to keep that 43M year, but that really doesn't fit as a realistic possibility with anything we know. I saw him mentioned as perhaps being available to someone in that price range, but haven't followed him all that closely. So... no. RE: MAVS NEWS: - DallasMaverick - 06-24-2025 (06-24-2025, 02:14 PM)F Gump Wrote: As a FA for the TxMLE, does D'Angelo Russell interest anyone? I saw him mentioned as perhaps being available to someone in that price range, but haven't followed him all that closely. I've always thought of him as an empty-stats guy, perhaps with some immaturity issues. Defensive rating of 114. Doesn't seem to fit the new Nico template. So bring him in to play backup minutes or fill in when Kyrie is hurt and i'd be in. Would be nice to add him on TxMLE and still get Paul on a minimum. How bad does Chris want that ring? RE: MAVS NEWS: - OBX Maverick - 06-24-2025 (06-24-2025, 02:14 PM)F Gump Wrote: As a FA for the TxMLE, does D'Angelo Russell interest anyone? I saw him mentioned as perhaps being available to someone in that price range, but haven't followed him all that closely. I’m definitely in on him. He has his warts but is in a doable price range as you mention. We have enough defense to hide him. Good back up once KI is back. RE: MAVS NEWS: - Smitty - 06-24-2025 (06-24-2025, 11:30 AM)michaeltex Wrote: Does DAL really want to take on another guaranteed rookie contract given the declining quality of this year's draft? (I'm looking at you OMax). Of course a non-guaranteed deal might leave them with another Brunson-type fiasco in a couple years. Just depends on their scouting department and how the board falls. Sure, if they've identified someone and that player falls to a range that a trade can be executed, go for it. People that say this draft is terrible or next years is great don't know any more than you or I do. The results of any draft aren't really known for a few years, even then it doesn't matter in the Mavs case, other than the player(s) they pick and how they turn out. The blanket statement that "this draft sucks" is always comical to me. The idea that no one knows anything is malarkey. It's always a crap shoot every year on each pick, to be sure, but some years draft classes have way more to work with (so way better odds of finding someone good) and some have way less. This year's got shorted considerably because of the NIL money hitting in the way it did, luring some good players from this year to next who would have normally been in this draft (and giving them a chance to hone their skills further). As a result, there's just not as much to pick from. Next year will be WAY better pickings for teams with a FRP. RE: MAVS NEWS: - KillerLeft - 06-24-2025 (06-24-2025, 02:14 PM)F Gump Wrote: As a FA for the TxMLE, does D'Angelo Russell interest anyone? I saw him mentioned as perhaps being available to someone in that price range, but haven't followed him all that closely. Any name we've discussed other than Lonzo Ball (only because you KNOW going in that he'll have to skip games to maintain some semblance of health) interests me, at this point. If a guard can credibly be called a starter in the NBA and we don't want him, we're officially being too picky. That's where the roster is. Obviously, what it would cost to acquire them should factor into their ranking in terms of desirability, but ANY of them would help the Mavs at this point in time, and I mean ANY. So yes, I'd be into Russell, and actually think they could do a lot worse. I like Sexton better, if I'm being honest. RE: MAVS NEWS: - Chicagojk - 06-24-2025 So supposedly Begley and Windhorst are both saying the Kidd to KNicks thing is not dead yet. Regardless what you think of Kidd as a coach, if this has not been put to bed yet it is another firable offense. Especially with the draft tomorrow and the visit from Flagg already. I want to doubt it but this front office just leaves way to many stones unturned. It is always something...typically done messy. To be fair to Nico (which is far more than he deserves), Kai is nuts if he thinks he's worth that much at his age coming off of that injury. RE: MAVS NEWS: - F Gump - 06-24-2025 I don't know what Windy said. But to me, Begley's stance is weak sauce (click bait level, trying to get NY attention, it seems to me). It's not based on any knowledge of anything, but just the observation that NY hasn't found a coach yet PLUS the Mavs didn't give Kidd an extension, so therefore HE (Begley) isn't closing the book on the idea! There is a world, where he Bradley Beals a full 120/3 extension. Do the Mavs have a new shadow GM? No way Nico is that sensible. There is still the simple possibility the Adelsons are the new Sterling. Just cheap as hell owners that wanted to avoid over $100M in extensions for Luka/Kyrie alone. Hmmmmm. RE: MAVS NEWS: - F Gump - 06-24-2025 (06-24-2025, 05:48 PM)Scott41theMavs Wrote: Oh, and now we're pissing off Kyrie. We don't know that the 2 sides are in conflict. I don't really trust Shams on this sort of stuff. If Stein says there's an issue, well, then I would have some concern. If Nico has any intelligence at all, he's playing real nice, and doing everything he can to make Kyrie happy, and this report is much ado about nothing. Because the reality for the Mavs is that they ALREADY have committed to paying Kyrie $43M this year (with a cap hit of $45M) and it's a great favor and a huge help to the team if he declines that deal so they can do have a different (lower) cap number for this season. If the Mavs aren't careful, they COULD end up paying him $43M and being stuck with the $45M cap hit for an injury-plagued year, killing their payroll and probably making them suffer all the A2 penalties, then see him as a UFA and looking for a place to walk next summer. And he has to TRUST them, to decline a sure thing and then sign a new deal in July that isn't a deal until it's signed. From prior whispers, I had penciled in a total guesstimate around 123M in which he gets the 43M he already had plus adds on 2 x 40, and then the payout by year gets revised. He was REALLY good last year until he got hurt, with 40M for that being a major bargain. Frankly, Kyrie may be the best asset Nico has, whether he realizes it or not, and he would be an idiot to mess that up. Will we see NTI ride again? I don't THINK the goal is to move on from Kyrie, but I have to admit that finding out they gave him a "take it or leave it" offer wouldn't turn me off. Where's he going to go, and do we even know he'll be any good (almost) a year from now, when he's back? I keep seeing people say Christmas - no way, Jose. Maybe the all star break, but even then the rest of his season will be rehab, basically. And after? Anyone's guess is as good as mine, but I'd say this injury makes it clear that his very best years are over. If there's a deal out there for someone GOOD, I don't care if takes Gafford, PJW or BOTH. I'd not be planning for Kyrie to come save the day if I was in the MBT's shoes, that's for sure. If you get him on a new deal you can stomach and it turns out he's not done, GREAT! That's like a bonus. But, if I was steering this ship, my goal would be to assemble a team that could contend with or without him. |
