I think he's an iso-scoring guard, and I think the team needs a guy who thinks in terms of play making...which brings us to the conversation we've been having about Flagg playing point forward on day 1. For some, "yeah, let's try that" is apparently a viable way forward from here, but I think that would be a huge mistake, personally.

The roster is ridiculously lopsided. Something MUST be done about that before we can talk seriously about this team and whether or not they're any good, or even whether or not they should try to be.

I've been reading this forum for the last two months thinking maybe I've lost my mind.

Cooper Flagg at the 2.  Cooper Flagg at the 1.  Just need a placeholder for Kyrie.

What sport are we talking about?  We literally don't have a player that can dribble the ball up the court if pressured.  Once Kyrie got hurt, they were giving AD the ball 30 feet from the basket to initiate ISOs.

I don't know if Flagg can be a Batman but for sure he can't be it before 3/4 years and then AD&Irving will be at Cancun.

If Irving is a Robin then street clothes is a Catwoman.

Luka is one of the best passers in league history because of his size, vision, creativity, and basketball IQ.  Comparisons between the two from that standpoint needs to be erased from our heads.  Flagg has playmaking ability and he'll certainly improve, I just don't think you want him dribbling the ball more than 3 or 4 times and an initiator is going to need to do that from time to time.  I'm super, super, super excited for Flagg, but he has a long way to go before he's a finished product, particularly on the offensive end.

I seem to remember that Luka’s scouting report had him as a subpar dribbler who was going to give up many steals if he brought the ball down the court.

So a quick summary of this video...

This is largely a discussion about Cooper Flagg with Leif Thulin - a credentailed draft analyst currently working for the Utah Jazz. He digs deep into Flagg.

Most of this is a glowing analysis of CF, but about half way through they talk about Flagg inside the Mavericks rotation, playing Flagg at the 2-spot and even playing him at PG. This guy is completly on board with that. It's an itnteresting discussion. These aren't Mavs podcasters, but they know our players.

But the other thing that really pretty funny is how pissed he is that the Mavs got Flagg and how completely unfair it was. Basically he sees it as Nico getting rewarded for making a bonehead Luka trade. Thulin is a Utah guy, but I sort of get where he's coming from. His rant feels like something on this board.

UT did a great job of stripping down their roster to get this generational talent. Then they tanked so that Marknannen, Sexton, Kessler, etc couldn't mess up their #1 seed. Mission accomplished, #1 seed obtained.

So the NBA owed them the pick, right?

No.

Indiana is a coach's team, built around an all-time great coach idea with depth and pieces that fits each other, with ball movement and such.
Dallas was a team that was built around a coach's defensive idea, with my turn your turn type of offense when we had Luka, and high usage rate from him.

Agree.

That kind of squad is impossible under Kidd, he doesn't coach offense. He simply can't.

Luka saved his face multiple times.

Not sure what this has to do with a conversation about current Mav's AD, Flagg and Kyrie working as a 3-Robin lineup.

The only footprint we've seen of that is the 2003/2004 Pistons (Chauncy, Rip, Tayshaun, Rasheed, Ben)...  all Robin's

RE: MAVS NEWS: - F Gump - 06-22-2025

There is no "3 Robin lineup" looming (and if there was, it wouldn't really be subject to change anyhow).

But Flagg will be The Guy before long. Maybe not in year 1, but soon enough thereafter where you might as well let him assume the role from the outset, as much as he can handle, and grow into it faster.

And imo the growth will come very fast, just like it did with Luka.

Batman plus TWO Robins, that works well.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - Winter - 06-22-2025

It's interesting to think about Flagg as compared to other number 1 draft picks.

Flagg (like Wemby) is someone you clearly build around even before he plays a single NBA game. Because of this pedigree, the Mavs Front Office gets to think into the future. In fact, they have to.

Most years, organizations are trying to figure out how to best use their draft pick with their current team roster. Some years the number 1 pick isn't a certainty as an immediate starter. The Mavs, I think, have to make certain assumptions about CF. Their draft pick is the player you build around so they have to make decisions about salaries and rosters using Flagg as the focal point. And they actually have to do that now.

Doncic wasn't that kind of player initially. He really didn't become that guy until after his first or second year. Wemby may be the only player in the last decade to have that kind of impact on an organization.

None of that means CF is an instant all-star. But it does mean, I think, that roster building for the Mavericks is based on Flagg as the core player.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - Smitty - 06-22-2025

[Stein] NBA Draft Eve has the potential to deliver some clarity on another major curiosity of this offseason because Dallas' Irving must decide by Tuesday whether to activate or bypass his $44 million player option for next season … unless the sides agree to move that date to June 29 as Houston and Fred VanVleet recently did with VanVleet's $44.9 million player option.
To be clear: Absolutely nothing has changed in terms of the long-held anticipation that Irving will be anywhere but Dallas next season. Yet it does remain unclear at this juncture whether Irving will simply activate the option and then try to hammer out an extension with the Mavericks that can be signed starting July 7 ... or surrender the option to become an unrestricted free agent.
Passing on the option, of course, would suggest that the sides are headed for a new deal in free agency, with Dallas anticipated for some time to try to re-sign the 33-year-old to a new three-year pact in the general vicinity of his original three-year, $120 million deal with the Mavericks.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - Chicagojk - 06-22-2025

Mavs lose Sweeney. I have no really sight. He seems respected. Sort of weird. Yes, it is a slight promotion but feels like this is a lateral move.

Dallas Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney has agreed on a deal to become the associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs under Mitch Johnson, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports tells ESPN. Sweeney has interviewed for coaching jobs in recent years and now departs Mavs for elevated role.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Jobs in the NBA are the same as in any other field. Yes, part of why his name keeps coming up for these openings is because he's respected, but ALSO his name keeps getting mentioned because he's applying for everything and clearly wants to be a head coach. I'm sure part of him is growing increasingly deflated because he never gets one. My guess is that this, to him, is a stepping stone move to a position with more responsibility and probably a salary raise. It's all about positioning himself to actually GET a head coaching job.

I'm no Kidd fan, but the Harrison/Kidd/Dudley combo is what has been making players want to be here, so losing Dudley was the greater fear from my POV.

This is this latest summer twitter insider. So take it with a grain of salt.

@Ary_Report
The Mavericks will not retain assistant coach Jared Dudley when his contract expires at month’s end, sources say. There’s expected to be strong interest in Dudley from multiple teams.

Whoops! I spoke too soon. This, along with the Sweeney news, could be concerning.

@SIChrisMannix
Could be more turnover on Dallas's bench. Jared Dudley is getting heavy interest from multiple teams, as
@TheSteinLine has reported. I'm told God Shammgod could move as well. Both Sweeney and Dudley are viewed as future NBA head coach's.
