RE: MAVS NEWS: - KillerLeft - 05-20-2025 (05-20-2025, 11:17 AM)Smitty Wrote: I think that could possibly be done with Gafford for the Atlanta pick (#22). They have the Murray TPE and the have Pick #13 in this draft as well. The only Center on the roster is Okongwu. Gafford could continue to thrive with a player like Young. Using Gafford to acquire another cost controlled player on the Cooper Flagg timeline, while simultaneously moving in a direction that could potentially open up part or all of the MLE this summer? Sign me up. I would like that more than Gafford + picks for only one player. I also think Dan's idea of doing something like that with Martin (or even Marshall). For me, the team has an organizing principle again that's easily identifiable. There's someone to root for, someone around whom to build. The fact that the Mavs won the first pick in the draft is a miracle. I believe that the first pick is, and should be, Cooper Flagg. I'm also very wary of expectations and planning anything around Cooper Flag. I just can't get away from the dark cloud hanging over me that Nico Harrison will mess up the pick. You know...like trading the pick for the #28 pick and a 2033 second round pick--and a bag of chips. But what do I know? So...I'm calling for a second miracle. Please, please, oh pretty please--fire Nico Harrison. Damn. The cloud is still there. I'm torn between something like this or using him in a trade for a difference maker at PG. I guess it depends on who the PG is, but trading for a (FRP) cost-controlled guy on Flagg's timeline, while balancing your salary structure, has its obvious benefits. I'm with you there, too, but I'm starting to wonder if the biggest difference maker plausibly gettable for the Mavs might require use of the MLE. I seriously question the idea that a "difference maker" will be available for a 5.8m MLE. Anything bigger requires MAJOR trauma to the roster. And i also have reservations they could even get room for that small MLE. Anything bigger requires MAJOR trauma to the roster. I thought the Yosi video outlined the HOW pretty easily. To your point, it's about whether or not it would be worth it. This roster needs a PG, maybe even 2. For the MAVS, I'd say the best PG they can get is a difference maker, by default. If that guy is an MLE guy, it might be worth it for me. It all depends on who/what is out there and interested in coming here, of course. The idea that they can just call Cooper Flagg a guard because they don't have any is a total non-starter for me. Mayyyybe in some niche lineups along the way in specific circumstances. For ME, there's literally no point in even watching this thing unless they get a PG. Count me in for “giving away” Martin and Klay to save money and get under the aprons. They are more liabilities than positives going forward. Atlanta is one of the few teams that may be interested in Gafford, but not a chance in hell they’d give up the #13 pick for him. Maybe you could get a pick in the late 20s or early 30s, but the #13 pick in this draft looks to be a pretty good young player. I’d be happy to trade AD too, but if he were actually shopped, we’d all learn that his value is shockingly low compared to what the Mavs gave up for him. It would be an embarrassment for the franchise. RE: MAVS NEWS: - F Gump - 05-20-2025 Ideas based on giving away GOOD players to get another 2025 FRP are imo incredibly BAD ideas. This is a weak junk-filled draft, and you're digging in the garbage hoping to get lucky. The most likely outcomes are a repeat of OMax and Hardy, who came from better draft classes and have been spares. What a terrible way to spend hard-to-get talent. Personally, I didn't see it like this. I saw it as moving contracts. I'm not looking for the right player in the draft. I'm looking for the right player in a trade. I feel like there are teams in the draft that could take some of our contracts in that process. That may not be possible, but there are a few teams in this draft loaded with picks and nowhere to put them. I don't think picking up a draft pick can help us now... but freeing some space by unloading a contract or two might help later in a trade. RE: MAVS NEWS: - F Gump - 05-20-2025 I tried to watch the Yossi video, but he lost me pretty quick with the D White trade (with the C's not really getting anything they'd value at this point), as well as with the unrealistic cap moves he casually uses to show a revised Mavs payroll to then have them doing things they really cannot. I agree however with the quest to get rid of both Martin and Hardy, and in case anyone is keeping score, those were Nico moves this past season in which he deliberately CREATED bad multi-year bloated additions to the payroll with the stupid idea they would be valuable to have. That is so moronic. So Nico. The fact he will be making more decisions this summer is not a promising situation. What a terrible way to spend hard-to-get talent. 2025 has been heralded as one of the most stacked draft classes of the last 10 years. But I largely agree with you. Giving away a good guy (I.E. PJ, Gafford, heck even Naji) to get another FRP is a risky bet. Just keep the team whole, and work around the edges. Hardy+Martin is 15mil that can be easily trimmed to avoid any 2nd apron talk. Talk Kyrie into that 3 year extension starting at 37 mil and the Mavs are suddenly below the 1st apron. If you think that, you shouldn't. At one time, yes it was labeled that way. However, that's not how it actually turned out (and I'm not seeing anyone who says otherwise). It's VERY thin at the top, with not much quantity OR quality behind Flagg, and there's not much depth to the draft either. The sizable guaranteed contracts to kids who by default end up being 1st rounders (because they are the best that's left) but are never worth a roster spot will be MANY. Sure, some of them will pan out as always, but it's a real crapshoot. And the Mavs can't really afford to get stuck with that guy who is junk, littering their cap with a multi-year guarantee. Frankly, I think B Will and Kai would be late lottery or so if they could jump into this draft right now, even at their age. I wanted pick 1. Period. I was leery of picks in the Mavs range at 11 or so, and didn't see sure value past pick 4 or so. Not sure there's another All-Star to be except CF. This draft fizzled to a large degree because of the emergence of big paychecks to college players. The middle tier of the 1st round and early 2nds can now get paid VERY well to stay in college and work on their game, rather than jump to NBA and face much harder opposition. So they did. RE: MAVS NEWS: - Winter - 05-21-2025 Talking Brooklyn out of their first draft pick to acquire CF's teammate, Kon Knuppel, is a really fun dream. Ok, carry on |
