RE: MAVS NEWS: - myconsumerclub - 05-14-2025

If we are all in on Flagg's timeline then I would still want to keep AD, Klay and Kyrie for a bit longer till Flagg is ready to step his game up to all NBA standards. AD Klay and KY are somewhat primetime now when healthy. Flagg is a rookie at 18. Lets remember that and if you start to dump guys to build younger depth you trim the other guys like Naji 27, Martin 29, & Exum 29. Lively, Hardy, OMax and Max are 21, 22, 22, and 22 respectively so that is our younger group to consider. PJ and Gaff are both 26 so still fairly young. Kai Jones 24 Kessler Edwards 24 and Brandon Williams at 25 also are fairly young.

The proposed line up starters: Irving AD Flag Lively and Klay. This is a good one which I might want to watch once they get a chance to show what they can do. BWill could be a starter in the meantime if Flagg can learn to be a facilitator as well.

If we look to add more talent to replace 3 or 4 guys then draft picks might work to add talent if we see something we like. After all the draft gets you lower cost talent. If this is the last good draft for a while I say stock up on cheap talent you can always trade rooks if they are showing promise and or doing good work, especially if the upcoming draft stock is meh.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - myconsumerclub - 05-14-2025

Moses Brown is only 25 as well if he is in the teams plans for lower cost depth.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - myconsumerclub - 05-14-2025

Free Agents to target: Keon Ellis / SG / Sacramento / Team Option age 25 and 6'4"

Can't see why they would use their option but this guy looks like a good shooter

Shooting nearly 43 percent from three for his career. Has good athleticism and bounce, and should continue to develop the rest of his scoring game, at least considering his early-career trajectory thus far. However, the fact that he’s already 25 could scare some teams from offering him too big of a contract this summer.

2024/25 stats: 8.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.5 spg, 0.8 bpg, 48.9 FG%, 43.3 3P%
2024/25 earnings: $2,120,693
Career earnings: $3,313,014
Agent: Corey Marcum
__________________________
Amir Coffey / SG / LA Clippers age 27 6'7"

Energy player with good athleticism, tenacity on defense and with a solid outside jumper. All in all, a positive impact role player. Coming off a career-high in points average.

2024/25 stats: 9.7 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.1 apg, 47.1 FG%, 40.9 3P%
2024/25 earnings: $3,938,271
Career earnings: $12,231,986
Agent: Bill Duffy

RE: MAVS NEWS: - F Gump - 05-15-2025

CP3 is not a realistic option for the Mavs, no matter how well he might fit. No way to get him.

Thank you, Shams "Captain Obvious" C.

The Mavs only PG on the entire roster until Kyrie is healed (assuming that happens) is Williams. The idea they need and will work to find someone to fill that hole goes without saying.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - LukaMVP - 05-15-2025

Harper would have been the no.1 pick in 7-8 drafts of the past 10 years imho, he's second only to Flagg in this class which says a lot. doubt spurs would have such strong interest in davis though.

Yeah, I heard Stein hint earlier tonight that this was not likely. Bummer.

I agree that point guard is the obvious need, but given how the team has been run recently, I’m actually glad to know he’s tweeting this, because it means he got someone from the team to say so. For me, it’s comforting to know they’re seeing the same obvious things we’re seeing. A low standard, I know.

I don't think he's talked to anyone -- just observing the situation, and stating the obvious that we all see AS IF he has something. He does this regularly (with never even a claim that "sources" said it). And it's always stupidly-obvious "news" of what's ahead.

Thinking to recent examples, he did it with the 'news flash' idea that BOS might make changes this summer. (Ya think? With a payroll exceeding 500M looming, how is that news?)

RE: MAVS NEWS: - LukaMVP - 05-15-2025

it's good that they know what the team needs but it's only good to know that when they've already made the decision to draft Flagg and made it public, otherwise about half of the fanbase would be concerned they might pick Harper on the draft night just to meet what the team needs most.

Mavs top priority, a PG.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - DallasMaverick - 05-15-2025

Seems like Ball fits the general criteria they’re looking for:

Tall, good defender, good ball-handler, good initiator and facilitator, on a reasonable contract.

I can’t see the Mavs trading PJW. He’s too versatile and valuable.

Gafford is more limited, and more disposable.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - HoosierDaddyKid - 05-15-2025

PJW is expendable in my mind. CF is more of a SF that can slide to PF on occasion. PJW plays better as a PF, than a SF. He struggles vs some of the better SF's in the league. Then you have Marshall who I think is slightly better than PJW and can swing between both positions. One of them will be expendable with CF on the scene now.

With Kyrie out, I think Marshall is super valuable right now in our second unit as he is one of the few players that can consistently create good looks for himself.

Just comes down to the contract for me
There is no way we pay him enough to keep him around past next year. Just not going to happen
So we either trade him or he walks for nothing

If he doesn't get his extension then we know from this FO's recent history that he's absolutely gone and if I'm his agent I'm looking at what happened to Wood and Grimes on contract years and asking out immediately.

Oh, interesting. You might be right, but this thought has never occurred to me. My interpretation of Shams' twitter account has always been that it contains 0% thought of his own for any reason, ever. That every word of it is a paraphrase of some text he got from someone with direct knowledge of the subject matter.

I mean, I don't think anyone actually cares what HE thinks about anything - that's not really his brand.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - F Gump - 05-15-2025

About PJW, I agree with those saying that what happens with him depends on the size of his next contract, but I'm not convinced he will be impossibly expensive. The reset with the new economics has removed the idea that every decent player gets a max deal, because the resulting payroll totals just don't work within hard cap constraints.

Several factors are probably in play with PJW that point in varying directions on value and preferences. He's still just 26. He has had the experience of playing on a crappy going-nowhere team and won't want to do that again. He's a Dallas kid and likes playing here. (He needs 2 more seasons in Dallas to be able to ask for a no-trade clause on a deal, fwiw.) And his financial demands were not met in his last negotiation because his game contribution does have some limits (in particular, on the offensive end, where the money is). There's no way to know how he might view the Luka trade, whether it makes this a place not to be or not to trust, or whether he's secretly glad the Mavs moved a player who might not have been as committed to hard work and defense as he'd like. Or what he might think of the addition of Flagg, who adds skills but also adds competition for minutes. Players like lots of available minutes.

Will PJW get a raise? Yep. But how much of a raise will matter as to whether the Mavs can feasibly keep him, and whether he wants to extend. They will continue to need strong rotation players at medium sized salaries when they can get them. They can afford him at the right price.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - michaeltex - 05-15-2025

What are the trade rules for re-signed players? Is an extension different than a re-signing in this regard?

Agree with all this, in general. I definitely don't think PJ is a max player, and I doubt he does, either.

However, he was an important starter on a finals team a year ago with a freshly rehabilitated profile around the league and the arrow for his career pointing straight up. Now, he finds himself in a situation wherein he's no better than the 5th best player on the team, and the roster's BEST TWO players both have significant overlap with him, positionally.

Unless the Mavs and his agent have basically already reached a number range they can all ive with on some sort of extension (forgive me, I don't follow the rules of how the timing of things like this work as much as you do), I have a strong suspicion that he is NOT gonna be cool with coming off the bench next year, and ESPECIALLY next year, and that is 1000% where his role is headed if he stays, whether Gafford is moved or not. To be clear, my opinion is that IF a center is moved, there very well might be a JUICY bench role for PJW here that could work very well for both him and the team - I just doubt he's likely to be excited about taking that leap of faith. If he had a contract in hand already, possibly.

My prediction is that either PJW or Naji Marshall is gone, more than likely (heck, maybe both, if they really like Caleb Martin) and judging by recent Mavs maneuvers, I'd say the guy who's not currently cost controlled is the one they'll shop harder.

Again, NOBODY is a bigger fan of PJ than me. I was one of like two people who even wanted him here in the first place, and I think he's going to continue to improve, even. I just think it's a Cooper Flagg world now, and IF moving PJW is what it takes to get a more dynamic ball-handling guard in here, I can live with it.
