Once we see the team fully healthy hit the floor I think he will be justified. Just watching the games after the trade says a lot. They have fully committed to a high energy defense first style. That's truly what it takes to win.

Luka is like watching the Globetrotters. He is flashy and incredibly fun to watch. But, he would often come out flat early in games causing the team to get down and have to come back to win. I heard it mentioned that Luka needed defenders around him because he expended so much energy on offense he couldn't play defense. That's just not true. His conditioning made it so that he didn't have enough energy to play defense. When the leader of the team is like that it makes the coaches job hard.

The team since the trade has reminded me of watching old Celtics games with Larry Bird. Those teams played hard for 48 minutes. I am honestly starting to feel like Nico will be justified over the next 2-3 years. Mainly due to seeing how hard this team plays now combined with how rough Luka looks right now. Luka will get into basketball shape. But, I don't think he's going to all of a sudden change his conditioning and diet. If he hasn't by now why would he?

I completely agree.  We had just learned to live with it as fans because of what he brought to the offensive side of things and because he is fun to watch. Plus, Luka seems to be a good guy….an immature young man, but I believe a good person nonetheless. I don’t want to beat a dead bush, but I think what this boils down to for me and most other fans, is that we could live with losing him a lot more easily if Austin Reaves and 2 more first round picks  were included in that trade…Christie might end up making this thing look more even down the road, but the trade haul should have been much more.

Interesting.

Lively in an interview with Kentucky Sports Radio in 2021 during recruitment: "If I go [to Kentucky], they could show me how to play more like [AD], because [AD] is my role model. He can get to the rim, can step behind the three, block shots, guard a guard, he's an overall great big man."

Not surprised an up and coming big man would be a fan of Davis, who has been the premier big man for Americans to look up to the better part of a decade.

Now if he can actually implement some of ADs game into his then I’d be interested. We’ve been hearing about it for so long but I need to start actually seeing it to believe it. Lively can already pass well. He had a budding post game before his injury. Can he shoot? Can he take guys off the dribble?

That's awesome. You know, I was watching the game last night and realized that PJ is only 26. He won't be 27 until August. He's starting to look like a 2 way stud. He's flashing some all star potential and hasn't yet hit his prime. Max is shaping up to be a long time starter and possibly more at 21. Lively is 22 with all star/DPOY potential. If Lively can soak up what he can from AD that would be amazing long term.

add omax and our 25' rookie (if not traded) to that list and we have a solid young core for the future.

Exactly. A solid young core of 2 way players. I'm really liking what Nico and Kidd are building.

Edited for language. Second warming.

Actually, we (the mods) are pretty aligned on this, and I've been very clear that this was coming. Since this post is clearly attacking and personal, and since it's the third time in two days I've had to interact with one of your posts, enjoy a two day timeout.

@NationMffl
The Dallas Mavericks hope is that Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II can both return with enough time to play “several games together” at the end of the regular season, per @espn_macmahon

ESPN dropped the Mavs vs Bucks game on March 5th. They’ll broadcast OKC at MEM instead.

They're just trying to protect Giannis' brand since he's going to get shut down by Kessler Edwards.

The franchise still losing value everyday...

I think the part that sucks is this probably is going to be very far from the truth in the long run.  If the Adelsons eventually get their way and build a casino they may very well have one of the most valuable franchises in all of sports.  Cuban held onto that 27% because he knows if they can legalize gambling then he'll make even more from that portion of the franchise than his initial sale.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Nico Harrison is a Basketball Terrorist - SleepingHero - 02-26-2025

Yeah long term the franchise valuation isn't going to be hurt at all by this blunder. I mean the Bucks literally gave away Kareem to the Lakers and look how expensive their franchise is now?

Point is, the valuation will continue to go up as long as the NBA keeps pumping out a good product. And having Luka on the Lakers, in a roundabout way, actually helps ALL teams valuations including the Mavs.

What will hurt the owners is the dip in ticket prices, ticket sales, merchandise sales, and general fan interest. But that comes naturally when you win.

I think in the short term this move will hurt their pockets but long term they'll be just fine. Especially if they get their casino. Further, if this team actually does somehow miraculously stay healthy and fulfill the vision the dolts in the front office had, they will make up the lost revenue and then some.

All of this to say I still hate the move. Its impossible to justify the move. And I will never get over it as long as people involved are still associated with the Mavs.

Yes, but wasn't it better keep Doncic AND build casinò?

Like Hero said with the BRI every team will make money with Luka on Lakers but what Adelsons lost now and next years will be huge.

Tickets price are halved, merchandising is almost stopped, the fanbase is angry, TVs drop our games plus we probably will never go to WCF again in next 10 years... It's not a bad business move it's a disaster.

Nah.

If the team’s a winner, people will forget, and all will be forgiven.

Yesterday’s news.

that would certainly help
at the moment I think it's very, very possible that Luka wins more Rounds than we'll win playoff games over the next decade

Fallout from trading Luka. No Giannis vs Luka matchup that the NBA is big on.

Yeah. If they knew AD was going to play they would likely leave it.

Mavs decision to trade Luka will age horribly.
