RE: MAVS NEWS: Klay, Grimes, Naji Press Conference July 9th - Chicagojk - 07-09-2024

Seeing the pictures of the three new Mavs together really drills home how much of a masterclass the Hardaway trade was. Dallas had limited options entering the offseason and then on draft night Denver traded three second round picks to get off 5 million from Reggie Jackson. Dallas was able to move Hardaway with 3 seconds to get a player they supposedly like. That opened up almost the full MLE and also allowed them to go to Klay Thompson and say we had an available route now to get him. Not a possible option if they could make a move or two, a route right away. They were able to do this while potentially keeping one spot open and also keeping all available first round picks.

Time will tell if it works out how they envision it, but just an amazing move from looked like a real tight situation.

I don't believe he was awful.  I read he lost confidence and Dante was the better player last year.    Grimes wasn't happy with his role and the Knicks decided to move him for two short term veterans for a playoff push.

I could be wrong with the above, but I don't believe he was awful.  He did have a dip in percentages.   I think confidence can impact this.  He went from being a core role player to being passed by Dante.   BTW, Dante went from being dropped in MIL, to being OK in Sacramento and Golden State to finally finding his place where he had a breakout season.   Sometimes it takes a while or it may require a different place.  Will that happen to Grimes?  TBD.

Was he really that bad in NY?  He shot over 36% on 3s with 8.4 attempts per 36 while being a plus defender.  That is better floor spacing than anyone on the Mavs other than top three, and that was a down year.  He played 6 games in Detroit.  Not a lot to read in that sample.

NY refused to put him in a trade for Mitchel and rejected trading him for Josh Green.  He got sideways with Thibs because he didn't play hurt in the playoffs.  I wouldn't read anything into what Detroit is doing.  They just signed Tobias Harris for 25 mil a year.

As others have already said, I think calling Grimes abysmal is a bit of grandiose language. He was solid on NYK last year before being traded to DET. Donte outplayed him and injuries limited him.

There was a time 2 years ago where Grimes was the main piece that NYK was dangling for a potential blockbuster trade.

DET he wasn't great, but there could be a lot of reasons for that. Was he injured? Did he not want to be in DET at all? Was it more because the team itself was a cesspool and hard to acclimate in?

I'm really high on Grimes as long as he remains healthy.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Klay, Grimes, Naji Press Conference July 9th - F Gump - 07-09-2024

I hope you guys are right.

But his numbers were meh at best, and I don't think either of NY or DET would have traded him if they thought he was a useful player. Both teams tossed in the towel. And the idea that DET traded him away, because they want players who can win (in favor of THJ, no less!), should make you give pause.

And I'm being given an excuse for his play that was just debunked - he's saying he was 100% healthy.

I'll be glad to be wrong if he does good stuff in DAL, but I'm not counting any chickens on this one. Just a young guy, with a chance to try him out and see if there's anything worth having (expiring contract), and then figure it out from there imo.

I'm not reading to his time into Detroit at all, nobody gets better when they get traded to Detroit. That's gotta be one of the most depressing feelings as an athlete (unless you're THJ and can jack up as many shots as you want without consequence now).

I really liked that he talked about himself as a shooter a couple of times today, looking forward to emulating and challenging Klay in practice. That mindset alone separates him from Green and DJJ - and him being a good defender separates him from Hardaway Jr. He also talked about looking forward to being more creative on offense to take advantage of all the attention Luka, Kyrie and Klay are demanding, so let’s see, maybe we got a really solid two way player in a couple of months.

It's not just the folks on this board excited about adding him (new toy syndrome), it's the greater basketball community as a whole. But, I've seen more than one informed NBA observer wonder about the same things you're hinting at here, so I don't think this POV should be dismissed. I think the departure from NY can be explained away, but to your point, it has happened twice in a row.

If it wasn't about injuries (which I find encouraging, if true) then maybe it was social/attitude based? It's possible that he just wasn't psyched about getting shipped out of NY and allowed it to ruin his time in DET. It was probably tough for a young guy like that to be the starting 2-guard on a playoff team one year and then shipped off to an awful team the next. Guys like Hardaway and Harris probably view the opportunity as a lifeline (minutes and money, and one of their last chances at either), but I wonder how a young guy like Grimes saw that change.

Anyway, the Dinwiddie thing made me a believer in the power of scenery changes. He was supposed to be a malcontent in Washington after leaving BRK, and they couldn't wait to get rid of him. Come to find out he was trying to get them to play winning basketball (and they actually won some games early that year before taking the ball out of his hands) which "some people" (*cough*Kuzma*cough) didn't like. All of that to say, maybe Grimes and DET just didn't mix? If he's happy to be here, maybe we'll see the Grimes from two years ago. Here's hoping.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Klay, Grimes, Naji Press Conference July 9th - HoosierDaddyKid - 07-09-2024

Grimes was hurt with a knee injury the short time he was with Detroit. Makes me wonder if he was hurt when they traded him. He played a handful of games, then sat the rest of the year. So despite all the snarkiness about being in Detroit, he never got a chance to play. He got run outta town awfully quick by Thibs however.

Well, that was the operating theory, but he, himself just said he was 100%. That's what got us talking about this in the first place. I think you're right, for the record. I DO think his poor season last year (if you want to call it that) was mostly about injuries.

Do you think he would actually say he was hurt? Is he trying to make like it was Detroit's fault? Or he was faking injury because he didn't want to be there. Which is totally another issue. If he was fine, I think he would have played, I don't care how bad the team was. It just sounds weird to me.

No, no. He comported himself professionally at the press conference. I think he just meant "I'm good now." But, we were talking about FGump's take. He's skeptical about Grimes, based on the low value he seems to have these days. As in, maybe he's not as good as we think. I was just brainstorming other reasons Detroit might have had to give him away (other than stupidity). Maybe he just didn't like it there, they didn't like him, and it was best for all involved to move him along? Happens more than we realize, I bet.

Agents have a lot of power. Lindsey knew the Mavs interest in Grimes at the TDL. All of these relationships matter. Detroit got 3 SRP’s, will continue to tank, and sell an expiring Tim for even more at the TDL. Win-Win-Win for players/agents/GM’s.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Klay, Grimes, Naji Press Conference July 9th - Reunion Mav - 07-09-2024

My take: he will show up for training camp already having worked out with our guys. He will have a chance to earn playing time. If he does this becomes his fresh start. He has much to prove as Killer and FGump have pointed out. I’m very hopeful all three of these guys will add to the sum total more than their individual backgrounds might suggest.

Grimes-THJ was arranged at the TDL. Mavs kept the vet for a playoff run.

I would add that Grimes should know that failing in DAL would be a 3rd strike on his career chances. So if he's looking for more than vet min offers the next few years, he will show up in shape and willing to take on the role Kidd has for him.

That wouldn't surprise me at all. A lot of "wink-wink" deals are made before the TDL you won't hear about for obvious reasons.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Klay, Grimes, Naji Press Conference July 9th - Chicagojk - 07-10-2024

Pretty cool seeing some videos yesterday and then also seeing Lively and PJ getting some work in. They deserve more time enjoying their summer but seeing them in Dallas working is a really good sign.

PJ is the swing player for me next year. He was great with Dallas and made some huge shots. If he can get his three to 37/38 in our offense the defense will have no answers on stopping us. For Lively, I am not even counting on a second year jump. I want him to replicate his rookie year (being better would be fine as well). We have a nice pairing at center. I would like to see Lively continue to grow that come playoff time, he is a 30 minute a game player. For the regular season though, him and Gafford can split those minutes mostly.
