RE: TRADE: JJ Redick + Nicolo Melli to DAL | JJ + Iwundu + 2nd to NOP - Time Machine Dirk - 03-25-2021

I liked Iwundu here.
I think he had...

a) ...more potential than Reddick or Melli because he is younger and might have developed into a valuable 3&D guy.
b) ...more value right now to this Mavs team because he is a very good defender. We need that more than 3-point shooting imho.

Did we acquire Reddick for his Podcast?

You're taking this too hard. There's nothing we can do about it. It's not a sexy deal at all, but it's pretty clear cap space was still the goal. If given the choice between Johnson and Reddick for the rest of this season, I would've chosen Reddick.

Upgrade DFS or Kleber? -- No.

Upgrade the playoff rotation? -- No.

Upgrade the asset warchest? -- No.

Add a specialist for Carlisle? -- Yes. Disappointing for sure but Reddick will get playoff minutes.

Melli? -- No. Though the original original late breaking construct with Lyles wou've been nice, Melli is a throw in.

Mavs would have to cut one player to make it, because they have a full roster. So why not including additional one to the trade? Anyone thought Iwundu would be a valuable rotation guy next year? We freed a roster spot for next season. Johnson and Iwundu basically didn't play and when they did they were mostly bad. So I trully don't understand how Reddick could be worse.

On the other hand Reddick is a guy with great respect around the league. Way bigger than Johnson.

Please tell me how the Mavs improve the roster next year. Take a look at the free agent market and don´t forget that most of them are only an option if both Richardson and THJ are gone.

Respect around the league from a guy that does not want to be in Dallas.

How do you know? Were there any cap clearing moves Mavs didn't get in?

I don't disagree that Iwundu has some potential, but I think it was beyond clear that he wasn't going to get much more of a shot here. He was behind Richardson, THJ and DFS, and in Green's way.

If you want to complain, the mistake, imho, was signing Iwundu instead of Barea to begin with.

If the Mavs manage to get Porter, Drummond or LA in the buyout market that would be a really nice get and surprise. I would say you patched the biggest 2 holes in your roster for basically nothing.

Johnson SUCKED here, SO GLAD he is gone.

My 100% issue is burning a 2nd in the process. Rather just sit on Johnson and let him expire.

The Mavs burn little assets here and there and it SEEMS like no big deal, but they ADD up.

That´s my problem. Capspace is a terrible goal. Repeating the same mistake every single season. And for whatever reason fans are still buying. They complain when the plan fails but in march or april they are ready to try it again. Rinse and repeat.

Reddick is actually more than I expected from today.  Mavs will not miss Johnson or Iwundu at all.  Reddick might win you a playoff game if he is hot.

Oh, I don't KNOW, and maybe "the goal" isn't the right word. I'm just saying that this move, like all recent moves, got them more potential space (though only slightly), not less. I'm not saying they didn't want Reddick, or that clearing Iwundu's minimum salary guarantee was the main aim here.

I have NO PROBLEM with this move. I'm on your side.

RE: TRADE: JJ Redick + Nicolo Melli to DAL | JJ + Iwundu + 2nd to NOP - loki - 03-25-2021

I'm fine with it. Doesn't change much next offseason as they could have moved Iwundu's minimum salary deal at any time. Redick is probably slightly more useful than Johnson who should never see the court if Powell is playing better.

I don't think Melli is as bad as this year's numbers indicate, but I don't expect him to play much either way.

Yeah and I wonder if Houston buys out Olynk?   I assume the Lakers get one.   Miami may be out though as they traded for Bjelinca.   There should be competition for all three (or four), but Dallas has some good things to offer.

If Dallas could get one, than today is a really good day.  If not, it is a nice move with Reddick.  We will see how it plays out.

Any word yet on which one we sent? Hopefully the 2021 pick

Hope for Peja magic and all.  I can see arguments about the value of JJ/Iwundu (ball handling/defense) versus Redick's shooting but the inclusion of the pick would be my sticking point.  It just shrinks our already barren draft assets pool with no long term upside.

Hopefully 2021 OR one that has such weird protections that it won't ever convey....still trying to hold out hope the Mavs weren't idiots with their minimal assets.

I could definitely see it. And between him and OPJ, either guy would be welcome additions.

I might've misrepresented it as "the goal" sorry. I just meant that it was relatively harmless due to not worsening their financial commitments moving forward, and actually improving them ever so slightly.

I'm sorry you and others don't like cap space. Seriously, I can empathize. For me, personally, I'm still hopeful it can provide the right opportunity at the right time, and it's at least a different approach than what sucked so much about how the team built around Dirk for all those years.

Keeping cap space why trying to figure out how to build the team around Luka is smart. Unless you have a good reason to get rid of the cap space.

People keep equating cap space with plan powder. It's not all about getting max free agents although I'm sure they'll try to a certain extent.

RE: TRADE: JJ Redick + Nicolo Melli to DAL | JJ + Iwundu + 2nd to NOP - Jason Terry - 03-25-2021

Good trade if it ends up as:

1) reddick- bootleg curry replacement for the playoffs in a <10 mpg role

2) Olynk/OPj in a buyout as the backup 4

3) opens a roster spot for next year
