The Los Angeles Lakers are zeroing in on JJ Redick as the frontrunner for franchise’s next head coach, league and industry sources say.

After run to the Western Conference Finals, the Minnesota Timberwolves and president Tim Connelly have agreed to a restructured contract, locking him in for the 2024-25 season, sources tell me and @JonKrawczynski. Connelly’s opt-out clause has been moved to next year.

As much as I like Reddick, this is a real gamble. It's hard to imagine immediate success.

Isn’t Steve Nash available?

If anything, this makes me respect Redick less.

Maybe I am missing something, but I no longer think LeBron James can be the engine that wins a championship for a team. That’s one of the main takeaways from this year’s post season for me, that LeBron, Durant and curry are all past that point.

So, I don’t see how the Lakers ever win another championship in this iteration unless you think Anthony Davis is a top-five player in the NBA, and sorry if this is me underrating him, but I just don’t.

Does JJ think he can win there, or does he just really, really want to coach in the league? I mean, I get how attractive it must be to be head coach of the Lakers. That is one of the premier coaching positions in all of pro sports. However, does he not see how badly this is likely to turn out?

Totally agree with this. But for Reddick, it may just be a gamble short-term. I mean I never thought Jason Kidd would get hired again after Brooklyn, but he re-made himself. Reddick is certainly capable of that.

For the Lakers though, this just looks like you're sucking up to Lebron ... and really, I don't think this serves the Lakers in any meaningful way. They still look like a middle-of-the-pack team. Maybe they get lucky with injuries, but does anyone think they're competing for a top spot in the Western Conference? Even Houston might be better.

I would understand this argument a lot more if he weren’t running his own podcast NETWORK with at least 3-4 of the top sports podcasts, or if he wasn’t on the cusp of becoming the NBA’s leading broadcast analyst, but both of those things are true, and I have to imagine he is doing just fine, financially.

In fact, I wouldn’t be shocked if the Lakers salary is a downgrade for him, financially, given that he’ll be a first time head coach. I have no idea if that’s true, but it can’t be that big of a difference. To me, the real opportunity is his broadcasting career. He’s doing really well with that, and we all know that Charles Barkley makes a ton more money than anyone will ever make coaching a team. For me, it’s easier to imagine JJ reaching that point in the media than it is to imagine him reaching the top of the coaching profession, especially if that Klein begins by allowing himself to be LeBron’s next scapegoat.

Timing is interesting. He started with a small podcast in his last year as a player and quickly turned it into a big network with multiple podcasts/channels/shows. Is on his way to own an NBA media empire that rivals some of the biggest shows on ESPN/Fox.
Pretty big risk to put all of that on hold or at least take a backseat but I guess it is just too tempting to pass up the opportunity. Nearly impossible to get a coaching job in the NBA unless you belong to a select group of people.

The NBA is closing in on an 11-year, $76 billion media revenue deal with ESPN, NBC and Amazon, per @WSJ (https://www.wsj.com/business/media/nba-nears-76-billion-tv-deal-a-defining-moment-for-media-and-sports-4e8d762c?mod=e2tw):

ESPN = $2.6 billion annually
NBC = $2.5 billion annually

TNT will no longer be involved after next season.

It doesn't really make sense to me. Unless his media empire isn't as rosy as it seems. Maybe he's sick and tired of podcasting and coaching is going to be his break?
