A swap of THJ and Shamet in 2023 should be legal (unless I'm missing a caveat).
Mavs would generate about 6 million this season and if they waive Shamet, the entirety of THJ's contract.
Mavs roster number is now: 160,058,256 with 18,596,744 of space before the 1st apron.
If DJJ takes the entire MLE, the Mavs are left with about 5.7 mil of space before the 1st apron and need to fill 1 roster spot. Lets assume the last roster spot is a 2nd round pick of 1.1 mil. That leaves the Mavs with ~4.6 mil of space.

But if they wanted to do a 2 for 3 deal where the total salary is about 27 mil, the Mavs can do it, sign a vet min guy, and stay under the 1st apron.
Great. So if I am reading right, if they did this they can sign DJJ for the MLE and still have money available. What happens if they can pawn off Powell for nothing. Would that be enough for a Covington, Batum ( I would love him but I think he gets more), or some other veteran. It just feels like it is going to be tough to find minutes for this type of player, even if they deserve it.

If DJJ accepts the 1+1 TP-MLE, the Mavs summer gets a hell of a lot easier. I don't think he's going to do it, but seeing some of the random names floated the last 3 or 4 days (Jerami Grant, Tobias Harris) and now the Hawks (Bogdanovic?) and Miami (Duncan Robinson?), I'm just a tad bit more hopeful.

If they send Powell for air, just add 4 million flat to the numbers. So they can take back up to ~31 mil in a 2 for 3 trade. They'd have ~9 mil of room before the 1st apron (regardless of any trade).
Is 9 mil enough for Batum? Covington? Maybe. BAE is 4.7 mil.

*Asterisk here saying I don't know everything about the new CBA and I could easily be wrong. So take this with a grain of salt.
You do have to guarantee enough of his 24-25 salary to make the trade match legal. Same with CP3. They aren’t trading him as an instantly vanishing trade chip. Those don’t exist anymore.
I think the play here is to trade match Shamet for THJ. That gets you about $7.5m under the apron with no cushion. Then you S/W him as others have mentioned. That gets you $14mm under the apron.
If you do the protected 2025 for Washington #26 thing that I’ve brought up before, it costs you $2.6mm to pay for the rookie. But, you were going to need a minimum wage guy at $2.0mm anyway. Now you have $11.5mm left to fund a cushion under the apron and pay DJJ a starting wage of about $10.0-$10.5mm
Edit: You only have to guarantee enough of Shamet’s salary to make the trade legal. So, depending on timing, that might save a few more dollars.

Yeah seems crazy. Given how much of a difference FVV, OG and Siakam made on their new teams, it seems that they were the drivers of their "success".
But necessary contracts like this one also show why teams might be so incredibly hesitant to dish out the big bucks for players in their early to mid 30s now.

I wonder whether we could actually do a S&T DeRozan 54/3 for THJ/Powell +2nd round picks, where we actually gain some flexibility toward the DJJ re-signing. The rest coming from a different Kleber trade.

Poole is the guy they're really wanting to move, obviously, and Kuzma is much more likely to be moved than Advija, especially considering the likely Sarr pick. Sarr will probably play more 5 than 4, but there's still much more overlap with Kuzma than Advija.
I hate to say it, but I kind of feel like we can forget about Advija for a while. He's literally the only player on that team who I'd want to KEEP if I followed them.

Just speculating why either Kuzma or Avdija might be available.
Teams will naturally get bigger as the bigger players get more skilled. It's not moving away from small ball so much as it's the athletes and lower level training catching up to the new realities of what skills are required from each position.
I don't think Sarr is a forward, but don't know his game well enough yet to declare anything strongly. I know playing Kuzma at the 3 would be a huge mistake. I know that the way I know the sky is blue. Playing the 3 means you're going to get cross-matches with guards and quicker, offensively dangerous wings. Not where I'd want to be with Kuzma, Tobias Harris, or many of the other names we discuss around here.
