RE: MAVS NEWS: Kidd: Lively and Grant's sprains "Mild"- day to day - Winter - 01-04-2024

Sometimes there is no real expertise that drives our interest in young players. We just eyeball them, or listen to them talk, and make judgements about them.

I happen to like O-Max. I like his attitude and I like his aggressiveness. To me, he feels like the kind of player who will "get it." I think though, he's more likely to see time on the court next year.

Jaden Hardy, however, makes me squirm a little. Every so often he starts to feel a little like DiAngelo Russell and just wants to "beat his man"... and then suddenly he's a team guy again. I'm not entirely sold on him long term.

This is cool on a couple of levels:

1) Cool to know the great AI appreciates Luka's game.

2) More evidence that the morons refusing to admit Luka is a PG are morons.

3) Kyrie's game is a lot like AI, so we got that going for us right...?

Sit Luka out against Minnesota too. It would be hard to beat them even with a full roster anyway but since Lively will probably be out, they have no chance. This would give Luka 5 days off until the Grizzlies game on Tuesday.

That’s just Nico reminding himself what he has when other teams call for O-Max. Stay strong Nico!

I’m pretty sure O-Max was DNP the next game after his big performance against Houston. Also, O-Max didn’t get in until a third of the way thru the 4th last night if I’m remembering right.

But I was definitely thinking those thoughts (trade incoming?) during last nights game when it seemed like a perfect opportunity to get our young guys,  not Markieff and Set, some minutes.

I have really liked how Kidd has found minutes for Hardy and even Omax.    It is one of his strong suits of knowing when youngsters are ready for minutes.   Hardy started the year rough, but Kidd still found minutes for him.   He has found ways to use both Curry and Hardy.  I would assume he is going to trust Curry more, but he is at least giving Hardy chances.   I have really liked the last few Hardy appearances.   My main issue with him (I have others) as a Hardy fan is when his first look was taken away from him, he sort of goes into trying to get his own mode.  I think this is where he finds himself in trouble.  The last few games he has been aggressive but hasn't got stuck in trying to force baskets.   Last year he played in not important games where we asked him to score.  This year he is playing where the games matter.  Recently, I have seen a progression from the young player.  Still not there yet, but I like how Kidd is giving him some rope to grow.   Great experience for him.

Same with Omax on a much smaller stage.   Omax has gotten a few minutes here, a few minutes there.    He is clearly out of the regular rotation, but now they have him getting G-league time to gain confidence and be put in situations he has been practicing.   It wouldn't shock me to see him get more minutes as the season goes on.   I don't think he is quite ready though and would think Kidd would resist until he thinks he is ready.

Agree. This shuffling of Omax back and forth makes me think the Mavs coaches want to prepare him quickly for the rotation. It may also be that the Mavs will be facing some different roster moves as we near the trading deadline, and coaches know he's going to need to be ready to fill a hole if there's a trade.

Hopefully, this means Omax is valued even if Green and Hardy are currently further along in development.  Omax looks like the missing piece in a raw form.

Or they are pumping his value for a Toronto trade

Omax and Greg Brown with strong performances for the G-league team tonight.

What is Greg Brown's ideal way to make the NBA roster. Is it Derrick Jones type player or is it a small ball 5? Only 6'7 but plays bigger.
