Yeah. The roster breakdown is very simple. Nobody above 6´6 has any vertical lift (left) except DJJ and maybe Lively. I´m not even sure Lively is much of a leaper, he´s just 7´2 with long arms, while everybody else is in our front court is 6´11 at best, on a good day. Even prime Holmes only averaged 8.3 RPG as a career best. So our guys are neither tall, nor jump very high.

Mavs should have gone after some of the World Championship standouts that would have cost NOTHING and had strong-ish club seasons.

Bruno averaged 16/8 with 2 blocks for the German champions before finishing 3rd in RPG, 17th in BPG, 23rd SPG, 23rd PPG and 9th in EFF Rtg at the World Championships.

Wenyen Gabriel  had a nice season with the Lakers before playing a nice World Championships for South Sudan, where he finished #1 in BPG, #22 in RPG. He actually got waived by the Celtics recently. While he has his limitations, he´s at least an energy big who is really fast and running the floor hard with some vertical. He´d certainly gives us a dimension in the frontcourt we currrently don´t have.

He´s the free agent I´d look at. Otherwise it has to be a trade.

If Holmes can’t play or if they think he can’t play, mavs need to look at a move.  You can’t expect Lively to be your main cog for 82 games as a 19 year old.

They looked at Drummond this summer.  He could probably had for a second round pick.  Could be a short term option.  Bamba?  Mavs need to be on the lookout for someone who at least can be insurance.

In my ideal scenario we develop a younger center.  There will be several in the next draft who are probably second rounders.  But I hope we find a wing with length where Grant can fill in some minutes as a small ball 5.  We are just too small right now for that to work.

It´s a bit baffling that they didn´t consider how vertically and height challenged this roster still is. Lively already bailed them out big time with his performances. If he was Omax levels of ready, we´d be looking at last night every night. We´d be headed straight back to the lottery. Mo Bamba could probably be had for a late 2nd rounder and cash, or we can send Curry to Philly again.  Big Grin

I found it pretty interesting that Kidd was pretty adamant that OMAX is not going to the G-league. Who knows if he is telling the truth. If he continues to not get any time, it wouldn't hurt to send him to Frisco while the team is in town. It was curious and made me wonder if they plan to get him some run when we get a little more into the season.

I mean, the same folks who swore Lively was a wasted pick because he couldn't play for up to three years (lol) are now stating that O-Max won't contribute this year as if it's an obvious fact. I would think we'd be a little more humble about our understanding of that at this point, but I guess not.

Point being: for all we know, O-Max could be ensconced in the rotation by Christmas.

I would also vote for Wenyen Gabriel over Markieff Morris on this roster.  As Maxi continues to struggle, Gabriel would give us a backup 4 who plays defense and rebounds.  He doesn't space the floor but made a positive contribution last season for the Lakers.  Always plays hard.  He seems like a player Kidd would appreciate.  I second this idea.

That would be great.  I still wish we'd send him to the G-league for a while so he could play some minutes against other professionals.

I was definitely wrong about Lively's readiness so I'll be glad to see OMax contribute later this year.

It's telling though that Kidd doesn't trust him enough to try him despite Maxi's struggles.

When you're shortly behind the four final teams from last year (right after the world champs), methinks this isn't a great KPI, unless it's used in reverse.

Huh?  All analysis on Lively changed in the preseason when he was up against NBA starters.  The kid just has one of those games that's made for the NBA, but you can't completely see that until they play against NBA competition.  Hence, there are lottery busts.

OMax can't yet shoot, dribble, pass, or play at NBA speed yet.  He looked like a demon in the Summer League, then looked completely lost in the preseason.  He needs to start every Legends game as a point forward so he can develop his dribbling, passing, and game speed in-game.  Shooting is developed in the gym, then solidified in the games.  I'm still high on OMax, but he has a long way to go.

I've been saying this all along. This OMax hype needs to stop. And Kidd knows that as well. That's why he hasn't played even in garbage time that I've seen. He looks like a project to me. Every game I've seen him in, he has the confused deer in the headlights look on the floor. Green was the same to me when he first got drafted. He has outstanding defensive metrics and athleticism, but is a reluctant shooter and scorer. If both turn the corner, it would be great for the team, but I don't see it right now. Sorry...

RE: MAVS NEWS: Mavs last in NBA in PIP, but first in our hearts - Nowitzki Way - 11-10-2023

This team is too small, and they had to of known that going into the season. We are relying on a 19 year old rookie to save us and that will end bad.

They need to make a trade immediately or this season will go down in the dumps. Teams will continue to bully and punish us inside.

Maxi is toast. Powell is still too soft. Holmes has nothing left. Why is Curry here? Why is the bad Morris twin here?

This front office struggles so hard to build a normal NBA roster. Its comical.

I am putting a lot what I saw in the last preseason game and he looked a little lost.   There were a few things he did that showed he wasn't ready.  But I would caution saying he will not break into the roster this year.  I went back and watched his college highlights and summer league highlights.   How he plays should be an easier transition to the NBA than some guy who is being asked to run a team.  He would probably be a better fit playing with Kyrie than Luka at this stage.  Kyrie allows a more free flowing offense.   So maybe you begin him there to give him some run?

On a different matter, I wonder what Dallas does with Green.  I think there is a legit case that Green is a bench player and not a starter.  Jones Jr has been solid as token 5th starter, and Green has been shaky (for the most part).  Jones in all likelihood is a one year placeholder (if that).  Green is someone the team hopes to be here moving forward.  If Green keeps on having the 3 pt, 6 pt, games, I wonder if they see if starting him helps?   He appeared to play better in preseason when he started.   This team is much better positioned  moving if they can find a role where Green is scoring 10 plus points a game imo.

Yeah, the lack of wing depth and having another rim protector seem like glaring holes.   It appears the team was exploring Capela and Ayton this summer.  Not sure how serious that was after the draft.   There was also rumors they had interest in Andre Drummond.   My thing this summer is the team had to be confident in what Holmes is.   He came to the summer league game (s).   They had to find out if they thought if he could help them.  If the answer was no, they had to be more aggressive looking for at least a stop gap.   Can you imagine if Lively was your regular 19 year old rookie big man?  We would be in a ton of problems.  We still may be as counting on a rookie for a full season is a ton to ask.

Right. At 6-2, the team is a dumpster fire and doomed to last place in the West. And every other team is Perfectly Constructed, has really smart coaches and front offices.

It’s like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Poor Mavs.

The role in Luka led offense should be even simpler in theory. His job could simply be limited to stand in the corner and shoot an open three if the opportunity happens. Can't think of an easier role for a guy to start. Than you build from there giving him more freedom on offense.

Maybe you are right.  I just feel to play with Luka you need to be in the right spot at the right time.  If you are not, he typically has a short fuse with this type of player.  He likes to have everything spread out where he can make the correct read.   OMAX is best as a guy who moves around and floats at this stage in his development.

I agree, Luka makes many no look passes where he tricks defenses with look-aways. This of course requires from guys to be in "the right" spot.

I really hope Maxi plays himself into form. Even if he can provide 20 minutes a night. That fills in a hole...even if he is not a a good rebounder. Right now, you really don't need to guard him. Just don't leave him wide open at the three point line. You can play off a few steps because he has been really gun shy unless he is wide open. I personally like him better playing next to another big guy...unless we are playing a dinosaur center where he can spread the floor.

Jones Jr if he continues to play well, could easily be re-signed I would think. But it's a long season and things change. His performance thus far was definitely unexpected. Green has to take the initiative to be better. His box score vs Toronto was underwhelming. 1-3 from the field, 1-2 from 3, 1 board, 2 assists, 2 fouls for 3 pts in 20 minutes. BTW, what's the deal with Hardy, has his minutes been cut? Signing Curry looks like a redundant move as well as he's getting a lot of DNPCDs.

It’s like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Poor Mavs.

They're off to a great start...after 8 games. Not trying to sound like the voice of doom, but It's way too early.
