The problem is that the result of that trade forces you over the hard cap (which is not permitted) as you complete your roster. Using your parameters here are the numbers...

1  11  - Roster Size, after doing the trade and waiving Lawson
2 174.5 -  Team Salary (for apron purposes) with those 11. Some contracts use a different number for Apron purposes.
3  4.14 - Room, under Apron 1 (which is your hard cap)
4 1.0 - Cushion Needed under Hard Cap. This is an arbitrary number, but all teams will leave some room in case of emergencies, since there are NO permissions ever given to exceed a hard cap.
5  3 - Empty Roster Slots to fill (minimum number). A team must carry at least 14 players on the roster.
6  2.09 - Minimum Salary. It will cost this much or more to fill each roster slot
7 180.79  - Team Salary after signing 3 players at minimum

Avdija is about as good as it gets in terms of contract size (less than 100% of outgoing THJ and similar money to PJ, but declining).  He plays plus D and on offense he’s a jack of many trades and while he’s kind of a master of none, he’s fairly good at almost everything (and still on a pretty good growth curve at only 23).

FWIW, Washington doesn’t have a 2025 pick.  I’d probably do the Green for 2026 part I mentioned earlier (using their TPE to absorb Green in a June trade) and add THJ, lightly protected 2025 and a lightly protected swap of 31 as a separate deal (that probably has to wait until July).  As they said on the podcast, that is a steep price, but you keep DJJ at the full NT MLE (moving him to a bench role) and you’ve swapped Green/31 pick swap (and a 24 for 25 pick swap kind of) for Avdija.  As we’ve talked through names, he’s probably number one for me.  The starting lineup just makes sense.   PJ is probably your worst starter, if not now, sometime fairly soon.

Green is much younger and I think he has substantially higher upside is he can ever put it together.  On the other hand, I can’t stop thinking the role the Mavs want Green to play, Thybulle is just better at that role.  I don’t know if I could pull the trigger just because I still think there is something still untapped with Green.  It is an interesting discussion though.

You do THJ/Maxi for Grant in 23/24.  Then you do the Green for Thybulle part in the new season.  Each deal would need to satisfy both teams on a stand alone basis in terms of draft compensation in case something happened with the second deal.  You could also put Green in the first deal and Maxi in the Thybulle deal, but it makes Dallas a taxpayer in 23/24.

I say “might” because there are a few potential issues.  Fanspo shows the first trade putting Portland within $260k of hitting the tax for the current season.  I imagine Fanspo doesn’t have every single penny of spending accounted for, so some minor tweaks might have to be made.   Portland does not have a 2025 first round pick.  So, I suspect part of the compensation for the THJ/Maxi for Grant part of this (or the THJ/Green for Grant part of this) would be our 2025.  It wouldn’t shock me to see Dallas get back one of Portland’s 2024 seconds in such a deal.

The other issue is when all is said and done, our three players for their two players adds some salary.  When you account for a Vet Minimum to get back to 14 players, it puts us about $650k over the first apron.  

But, we don’t have to make our 14th a vet min.  It can be a second rounder.  Last year Portland paid their two second rounders $1.1mm each.  That saves you more than the $650k needed to stay under the apron.    

Once we are under the apron with a legal roster, I believe we can spend the TP MLE and go over the apron as we’ve not done anything at this point to hard cap ourselves (or I don’t think we have).  Those who think DJJ will sign a 1+1 at $5.2mm were always going to put us above the first apron with that signing (given how close we are to the apron without it).  So, whether than $5.2mm goes to DJJ or some other player, you’d have the ability to spend it if you wish.
