RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - DL2RimRocker - 01-20-2025 (01-20-2025, 09:14 AM)Chicagojk Wrote: So, who are the names that are gettable who are better than we already have? Does this mean that probably Grimes is moved? Minutes are already tight. I just don't see how we can improve over Maxi without giving up some rotation players. This might be a year we stand pat at TDL and go with what we have. We should be significantly better considering we added Klay/Grimes/Naji/Dinwiddie and only lost THJ/Green/DJJ. Lively has a year of experience and PJ and Gafford went through training camp with us this time around. Also, Luka has another year of deep PO experience. What's killing us imo, is the injury bug that not only keeps star players from playing, but also keeps the team as a whole from building chemistry during the RS. That is definately the most likely outcome. I thought of Marcus Smart this morning. He has been pretty average this year. I believe he is out now too? A Memphis-Dallas trade is not happening, but if Memphis traded for Cam Johnson for instance....I wonder if Dallas would sniff around if Smart went to Brooklyn. I don't believe Maxi and Grime would work (plus a pick), but something like that would be in the range. Personally, I would prefer keeping (and resigning) Grimes. But I could see Kidd interested in a guy like Smart who despite all his faults and ugly play, is a tone setter. Some erroneously think his extension gets in the way, but they are using old rules which changed with the 2023 CBA. I've always thought Hardy's ceiling is Devonte Graham and Green could actually be useful. Absolutely. The team wasn't really healthy or in shape to begin the season, and then just as they were starting to show signs of clicking, the injury/illness thing started and just hasn't let up ever since. Even with all of that, there was a 2-3 week stretch where I thought this team was on a GREAT trajectory, and again, even during THAT stretch, circumstances of availability and chemistry hadn't reached anything close to ideal. That's why I kind of hope they're not trying to make a move just to do it. My interest in Herb Jones is a totally different thing. I just happen to think he's the caliber of player and fit who, if you had a sudden and unexpected path to acquiring him, would justify some shakeup and short-term risk. That's my opinion, and I don't expect everyone to feel similarly, but...yeah, I for sure don't think they should be looking to make changes just because, and I'll be just fine with an uneventful deadline this year, especially since the team has had so little of a chance to come together to this point. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - SleepingHero - 01-20-2025 @TheDunkCentral The Toronto Raptors are highly motivated to trade Bruce Brown, and he could become a potential buyout candidate if no trade materializes, per @JakeLFischer “The Raptors are very motivated to move Brown and his $23 million salary, sources said, in hopes of growing the return from trading Pascal Siakam to Indiana on Jan. 17, 2024…If no trade materializes involving Brown, he would surely be in great demand as a buyout candidate.” (Via http://bit.ly/3Ce0YVC) RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - SleepingHero - 01-20-2025 Okay so uh, we should be doing everything we can to give Bruce Brown the highest # possible for a buyout contract right?? RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - KillerLeft - 01-20-2025 (01-20-2025, 02:00 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: Okay so uh, we should be doing everything we can to give Bruce Brown the highest # possible for a buyout contract right?? Good target, especially on a buyout. I think he isn’t a fan of Dallas after being told he “wouldn’t play here” by Kidd and Harrison when he was a free agent. Maybe that is over blown, however. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - F Gump - 01-20-2025 Mavs don't have a roster slot, nor adequate money, to sign a buyout guy right now. Solving those issues would have to precede such a move. Is there even an easy way to do it? RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - SkenfromLMF - 01-20-2025 No there really isn’t… One of the goals of the hard cap is to prevent teams from back- loading with buyouts. The easiest way to add a FA is to trade Exum for air. You might be able to find a team willing to take Hardy, but that trade would look real bad in less than a year. Anything short of truly adding a player (not creating a vacuum) is not going to age well vs the opportunity cost in picks or players. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - F Gump - 01-20-2025 (01-20-2025, 02:31 PM)KillerLeft Wrote: Just to run out the grounder on this hypothetical, what would be the path of least resistance to accomplishing those goals? Is there even an easy way to do it? It's not easy. They can get a roster slot by waiving someone, but who? There's not a player on the roster that we can pinpoint. But more importantly, a waiver doesn't gain them a penny more of spending room (they have about 500K which is not sufficient since it's not even minimum salary) because all their contracts are fully guaranteed. So is there a 2-for-1 swap, to free up a space and potentially some spending room? But what target is there? And you sure don't do that trade primarily to sign a certain buyout, whose availability is going to be up in the air at best, and who might pick a different team. Or do you try to just give away a player (like Exum) in a 1-for-0? You have to do the trade 1st, then there probably won't be any buyouts until after the TDL, so it's risky -- and the Mavs' W/L record (ie, a team in freefall from contender status) may be unattractive to the better buyout guys looking for a spot to do some playoff things. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - Knutsen - 01-20-2025 I think the chances of getting Bruce Brown after a buyout aren’t too bad. We won the west last year is one sticking point, another is the minutes he could earn when you look at Dinwiddie and last but not least the connection to Kyrie from their time in Brooklyn. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - Ghost of Podkolzin - 01-20-2025 Brown could be a great buyout candidate, but not if you have to move any value from the roster. I bet Klay must be regretting signing with us instead of the Lakers right now. maybe mavs will come back strong next season with some summer reinforcements, but the recent poor performances may all but deter quality buyouts from even considering us tbh. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - ThisIStheYear - 01-20-2025 The Mavs need to sell, not buy. They’re cooked. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - SleepingHero - 01-21-2025 @esidery After holding out for two first-round picks last year for Kyle Kuzma, the Wizards will now have a difficult time even receiving one in a trade. With Kuzma going through a career-worst stretch making $23.5 million, there’s a strong possibility he stays in Washington all season RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - BigDirk41 - 01-21-2025 (01-21-2025, 10:16 AM)SleepingHero Wrote: @esidery Good job Washington..lol RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: - KillerLeft - 01-21-2025 (01-21-2025, 10:16 AM)SleepingHero Wrote: @esidery A reminder that it could always be worse.
