If we want to talk about Powell's value, I think it's instructive to look at the Mavs' record last year.

In games where Powell started, the Mavs were 26-38.

In games where Powell DNP, the Mavs were 1-5.

In games where Powell came off the bench, mostly playing under 20 min, the Mavs were 11-1.

I think that shows his value. He's a good character guy and hard worker who can give you good bench minutes in the regular season. Any more than that and you're basically a failed NBA team.

RE: MAVS NEWS: Luka proposes to AnaMaria! Mavs hire 3 assistants - KillerLeft - 07-07-2023

I swear, if Kidd is just smart enough to keep two shooters in the corners 90% of the time this year while they run high, spread pick and rolls that enable Luka and Kyrie to get downhill into oceans of space, the guy playing center isn’t going to keep this team from making it to the second round, at least.

The paint protection isn’t going to be elite, because there are like 5 guys in the whole league you can actually play who protect the paint like everyone is expecting, but the perimeter defense should be WAY better. Enough to move the needle significantly, I believe. It really is just about re-finding the path to offensive spacing, I think, and Williams is an EXCELLENT corner shooter who can attack close outs.

Rebounding…will probably still be pretty bad. Hopefully better than last year.

Just to play around with numbers.

Powell playing more than 25 minutes: 9-5
Powell playing less than 15 minutes: 8-11

Agree that I would prefer to have Powell in a bench role (who wouldn´t) but I am not sure if we can draw any definite conclusions from the team record.

I don't think Powell is the engine that flips the team from a 0.4065 winning percentage to a 0.916 winning percentage.

But its obvious he isn't a starter.

Alright, it’s 11. Where’s the news about Portland matching so I can unplug from this for the night?

How can Luka leave after this? Which employer hires three assistants to help an employee with his wedding proposal. Tongue

Jake Fischer was on The NBA Front Office podcast today.  They spent a surprising amount of time on Christian Wood today.  If you’d like to hear a fairly balanced view of the player and how they see his opportunities from here, I’d recommend it.  If you want to continue to wallow in your own “Kidd sucks” or “must be off the court stuff we don’t know about” narratives, I would not recommend it.

On The NBA podcast, Mort Jensen is a Boston guy and spends a good bit of time on the Grant Williams fit in Dallas.  He’s very high on GWill’s abilities in the short roll when Luka gets doubled.

"Wallow"??

One of the reasons there are other narratives is because there are none posted anywhere else that seem to account for seven teams in eight years. Coaches and other players haven't said anything, and most opinion people seem clueless on the subject.

Maybe you could enlighten us on what the Front Office podcast thought about Wood.

You buried the lead, imo. The most interesting talk was about PJ Washington. I’m more convinced than ever that Dallas was considering a sign and trade for him, at least before the Grant Williams move. I’m sure it ended there, but still, super interesting.

Not an NBA front office out there willing to pay him more than the minimum.

He’s not proven he can contribute to winning basketball.  He should probably grab a minimum with a winner like Miami or GSW where he can show consistency in a winning situation.  It probably means a defined role off the bench for 15-20 minutes rather than 35 minutes and 20 points on a terrible team.  It is the only way he’ll get back to making money again.  BTW, they compared his situation to that of Kelly Oubre (“speaking of empty stats”).

I am also high on Williams in the short roll. One of the reasons I expect Kleber to get more burn at center than people are saying around here.

For those who won’t listen, they didn’t mention Dallas.  They said there is an impasse on both years (Charlotte doesn’t want to give 4) and money (Charlotte is thinking $12-$15mm and PJ wants closer to $20mm).

Could become a situation where PJ takes the QO.  Could become like Chicago and Markkanen a few years ago where they let him go shop himself at the number he wanted.  Then when he found a team, Chicago said they didn’t want any salary back and Cleveland had to find a way to offload salary.

Both sides here have an opportunity to overplay their hand IMHO.  Charlotte might let him go if they got something of value.  But if they play it too aggressively, he’ll take the QO and leave in a year.  If you are PJ, do you pass up 3 x $15mm? Hoping you can get 4 x $20 next summer?  Will that money be available?  Will he play well enough to warrant it?

Oubre seems like a really good comp from a winning basketball on court BBIQ standpoint.

I hope we can all agree that Hardaway is more worth having than Oubre.

Sadly, there are indeed people here who aren't bright enough to avoid the grass is greener/younger is better tropes.

While I may think he is overpaid, he is still quite a useful player.
