Probably the pick.  If Asa were any position other than PF it might be different.  I would do that trade.

If we’re ranking the Gafford trade ideas with the reported teams. The value from each:

IND: Mathurin? (RFA)
ATL: Asa Newell or CLE FRP (currently #17)
BOS: ‘26 FRP (currently #23) or ‘27 FRP

I'm 100% convinced that IND wants Gafford because he's perfect for them. I'm not super convinced that deal gets you Mathurin. I'd probably do any of those deals, frankly. In the ATL deal I'd much prefer the pick. In the Boston deal I'd prefer the '27 over the '26. Both are likely to be bad picks, but the '27 solves some potential issues caused by not having a pick that year, I think. I know Dan's always looking for ways to get a '27 first.

I'm going to hope for KP/Kennard/RISACHER until about 2 hours after the deadline, probably. Fair warning, everyone.

Ideally, a multiple team bidding war and take the best offer.

IND: Mathurin
ATL: ASA and CLE FRP
BOS: '26 FRP, and '27 FRP ( likely has some protection on it.)

If you 1) don't think there's any hope of AD contributing to a truly competitive Mavs team, 2) don't think there's any hope of the Mavs getting even a modest return for him in trade and 3) are completely dejected over his presence here because it's both a financial barrier to productive team building and a constant bummer of a reminder about how a finals team was destroyed, then I don't know why you wouldn't be on this mindset.

It's pretty interesting to me. I don't mean this as an admonishment to anyone, or even a sarcastic dig. I just think people are currently hopeless and it's doing some interesting things to morale. I think the fact that more people wouldn't do something like this kind of PROVES the situation might not be as bad as it seems right now, and that deep down people know that.

Number 1 is certainly true. I haven’t given up on number 2, but at some point soon the Mavs need to cut their losses regardless. And even if the Mavs salvage something in a trade, it’s at best worth a late 1st or a couple of 2nds, nothing major. As for 3, I’m not dejected, the Mavs have a path, a single path to contention. That path involves hitting on all star caliber players with this year’s draft pick and with a free agent signing or trade sometime in the next two years. Davis’ contract is only a detriment to this path.

Bold to add the ‘and’ with Atlanta and Boston. I don’t think it’s realistic, but you never know. I do know that other fanbases rate Gafford way higher than this board does.

Dream big. I've seen varying opinions from Hawks fans, ranging from Kennard straight up to 2 FRP.
Boston- Any chance at getting Simons and their FRP?

Simons would be the likely salary needed from their end. It’d be a 3-team deal, probably multiple players. That’s why I didn’t get into the weeds on a Boston deal. The prize would be the pick(s)

Gaff should have some value. He has not been very good this year. I won’t be surprised
if he is traded, but I think it would prefer to keep him now. Let’s get a better idea what type of roster we may have this offseason. Try to build his value up and have more options this summer.

For me, moving Klay for an expiring is my number 1 goal. After that, probably moving Marshall to a contender. Good player, good contract, but I just think he is not long here. Could be wrong.

Obviously moving any of the bench dregs would be awesome. Just don’t see why anyone would do that.

RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - Chicagojk - 01-12-2026

that would be disappointing:

Yossi Gozlan and Sam Quinn believe that Naji Marshall’s trade value is likely between two or three second-picks. Quinn points to the LA Clippers as an ideal trade partner and believes a deal centered around Brook Lopez and three seconds would be agreeable.

I mean 3 second round picks gives you a lot of darts to throw out there, but yeah feel like we all want a first for him.

I would hold out for a late first.  Too many teams could use him.

This seems about right to me. I think a late 1st might be possible on draft night when the exact pick is known, but not at the TDL. Naji's value will always be held back a bit by his shooting.

He is not good from 3, but he is elite from midrange, can create his own shot a little bit and is currently the primary POA defender.  That has value.  A lot of potential buyers probably already know they are making the playoffs so no lottery danger.  You could also lottery protect the pick as well.

RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - Smitty - 01-12-2026

Trade ideas for Gafford, Klay, Naji:

Gafford--

IND: Mathurin (RFA) FOR Gafford
ATL: Kennard (expiring), '26 FRP via CLE (currently #18) FOR Gafford
BOS: Simons (expiring), Tillman, '26 SRP via NOP (currently #32), '27 FRP FOR Gafford, Klay  Note: BOS would need to send a minimum guy like Boucher + Cash to Nets or other
LAL: Rui (expiring), Vincent (expiring), Hayes (expiring), '31 FRP FOR Gafford, Klay, Exum
GSW: Kuminga, Hield FOR Gafford, Klay  Note: DAL would need to send a minimum guy like Exum + Cash to Nets or other OR route those two to Chicago FOR C. White, Z. Collins
TOR: RJ Barrett FOR Gafford, Klay

Klay--

SAS: Olynyk (expiring), '26 SRP (currently #36)
LAC: Bogdanovic (expiring), '26 SRP (currently #39)
DET: J. Ivey (expiring), '27 SRP

Naji--

OKC: Dort, Dieng, '26 FRP via PHI (currently #19) FOR Naji, Klay
DET: Harris (expiring), Sasser, J. Green, SRPs FOR Naji, Klay, Martin
MIA: Rozier (expiring), Larsson, K. Johnson, '28 FRP Swap FOR Naji, Klay, Martin
CHI: Z. Collins (expiring) FOR Naji, Martin

I think they'd want more than lottery protection in this draft. And if it doesn't convey immediately they wouldn't be able to trade the 27/28 picks either. To me it's a pretty big commitment for a role player.

You could simplify things by adding Klay which would match Simons and free up a roster spot for Nemby and a lot of money off the books for next year.  The question is how those picks get valued when adding Klay and his money.
