RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: NYK Shopping Mitchell Robinson? - SleepingHero - 10-08-2024 (10-07-2024, 06:09 PM)F Gump Wrote: That's news to me. Source? https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/08/hoops-rumors-glossary-exhibit-9-contract.html I found this article a couple of weeks ago that says: Quote:An Exhibit 9 contract, which is non-guaranteed and doesn’t count against the salary cap until the start of the regular season, can only be a one-year, minimum-salary deal. A team can carry up to six players on Exhibit 9 deals, but can’t sign a player to such a contract unless it has at least 14 players already under contract (not including two-way deals). But given you questioned it, makes me dubious of the validity of the source. https://www.spotrac.com/news/_/id/2032/explaining-exhibit-9-and-exhibit-10-contracts Spotrac actually further explains the the wording in the hoopsrumors article and clarifies it: Quote:If a team wants to keep a player on an Exhibit 9 deal, the simplest process is to keep them on the roster for opening night. At that point, the player’s contract converts from an Exhibit 9 contract to a standard non-guaranteed contract. It begins to count against the salary cap and the luxury tax, just like any other standard contract. If the team wants to guarantee the deal, they can do so at any time. Otherwise, the contract will become fully guaranteed on the league-wide guarantee date of January 10. (In reality, contracts become fully guaranteed on January 7, because players have to clear waivers by January 10 to avoid their deals becoming fully guaranteed. Thus, the last day to waive a player on a non-guaranteed deal is actually January 7. Aren’t date-based technicalities fun?) So I misunderstood and was mistaken. I took "doesn't count against the salary cap until the regular season" as "the contract becomes guaranteed", when in reality, it just becomes a regular non-guaranteed deal after training camp. ![]() RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: NYK Shopping Mitchell Robinson? - F Gump - 10-08-2024 SH, thanks for the clarification! RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: NYK Shopping Mitchell Robinson? - myconsumerclub - 10-11-2024 Got to develop Sharp Gortman and I have not seen Kessler so maybe he is okay but Miller did well enough to consider based on what he did in that first game still who gets to play as a third stringer anyway. At PG we already have Luka Ky Exum Din and Hardy able to dish things up nice enough that is 5 guys. Gortman is a luxury to help us if injuries happen and with Exum out that creates a comfort zone. At the 5 you have Lively, Gafford, Powell and Kleber so realistically speaking we have a bigger need for Sharp at the 5 and last year we had some guys hurt at the 5 so having a legit big is a big luxury and something that would allow us to keep our two headed monster fresher by the time playoffs roll around and that peaking thing with the play offs is kind of important. Wing / SF /SG Aj is experienced on this team but is he going to ever be a part of the teams success? He is older than the other young guys and we still have Ajinca in Euro league as well. Naji Grimes PJ Klay Omax is nice rotation already where is anyone else going to get an opportunity to oust one of these guys? With Sharp kept you move Powell to PF like you do with Kleber and now we have extra size to matchup against the bigger teams. PJ is capable of playing SF some heck if we develop Sharp into a mutumbo starter kit then why not play Lively next to him at PF and use that opportunity to give Derek the green light to shoot 3's more. Bottom Line Gortat and Shart should make the teams two way contract trio. AJ is old but if management is already married to the guy he needs to produce when he plays. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: NYK Shopping Mitchell Robinson? - RGP1981 - 10-12-2024 I think the Mavs need to keep a PG and a 3&D Wing around more than they need Sharp or Morris. Especially Gortman at PG, since Spencer has ups and downs, and Exum has injuries. The Wing could be either Emanuel Miller or AJ Lawson. I'd be leaning towards Miller since he is bigger and Lawson has already had a chance. Specially now when Luka tries to recruit him to Slovenia NT I see Gafford as a potential trade candidate next off season. He's simply too good to be a backup and Lively's minutes will only increase as he matures. That's why I'd like to see the Mavs attempt to develop Sharp into Powell's, or Gafford's role. You don't trade Gafford unless you have an alternative backup. Not sure how quick Sharp could be ready. Rim-finishing... + Rim-protecting + Rebounding + Help defend the perimeter... at the bare minimum. Otherwise, if it were just rim-finishing, then Dwight would be king... but he's just a Blight on my senses. ![]() Fully agreed though, you don't trade Gafford. Forget about Sharp being ready (he's not)... even Lively still has a LOT to prove. Lauri and Kessler both got the better of him the other day. Think I also saw someone say they would trade Grimes as "filler". That's another nutty suggestion. I think the Nuggets would be very happy to have Grimes between Jamal and MPJ though (and the Pacers would like a player with that profile too), in case you guys want to make that trade. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: NYK Shopping Mitchell Robinson? - DL2RimRocker - 10-12-2024 (10-12-2024, 05:10 PM)RGP1981 Wrote: Rim-finishing... + Rim-protecting + Rebounding + Help defend the perimeter... at the bare minimum. No doubt Mavs would want to keep Gafford at the right price, but Gafford will be in the middle of his prime when his contract expires so I'm looking at it from Gaff's point of view. I said the same thing about Brunson not wanting to re-sign to be Luka's backup at the time and people on other boards thought that was nutty. Considering Lively's age, upside, and most likely increasing minutes going into his 3rd season next year, the fact Kyrie and Klay are on the back sides of their careers, the Mavs having limited trade assets, and Gaff most likely wanting to play starting minutes (and get paid a starter salary), I don't think it is a nutty idea to think he could be trade bait next off season or at TDL in 2026. That will be close to the time the Mavs will have to offer Lively most likely a huge contract. Gafford should be one hell of a trade asset for us to help acquire Klay's replacement. The idea on developing Sharp is more about holding on to him as a potential candidate to replace Gafford if he decides to move on from the Mavs. Sharp could very easily be the next Moses Brown or Tacko Fall but my point is to give him one of the two-way contracts to see if he can become at least take Powell's role as an insurance/situational backup. Also, we have to remember the budding 7'6 superstar in our division that we'll have to deal with for many years so it wouldn't hurt having someone with similar size as an insurance/situational option. RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: NYK Shopping Mitchell Robinson? - Chicagojk - 10-12-2024 Who knows where we will be in two years. The Gafford decision may be obvious at that time. Luka get what you can on the super max, although I wonder if the Mavs would broach with Luka taking a little less to keep the potential next Slovenian Olympic center? RE: Trade & FA 2024-25: NYK Shopping Mitchell Robinson? - F Gump - 10-12-2024 The idea of Sharp being a possible player who might solve a need in 2 years is reasonable. But there is no need for them to do anything different that what they are doing with a player who is raw and needs lots of work to get to the 3rd stringer level. He's ALREADY locked up this year on a GL deal, with the Mavs having control and all kinds of choices at the end of the year. It remains to be seen if he develops at all, or very fast, but Mavs have all kinds of opportunities to keep him and bring him along further if they need them. |
