MacMahon says his understanding is that Luka Doncic is “pretty ecstatic” about the Klay Thompson addition

He also says he threw out Dennis Smith Jr.‘s name as an addition to the roster to “someone in the organization and it didn’t get shot down.”

Stems from this tweet, which is quoting MacMahon on his podcast. I haven't listened to the podcast so I don't know exactly what MacMahon said.

That's what I thought I saw earlier. But I read that as "He" (Cato) threw out DSJ's name to someone in the org. If the "he" was Luka, I'd think it would be phrased differently.

Agree with other posters that there's no evidence Luka wouldn't be happy to have DSJ come back--just not sure there's any evidence that he's breaking his "I leave the GM'ing to the GM" rule to ask for a specific player.

I’m not digging through podcast audio but I’m sure someone who listens to Tim’s stuff can quickly confirm that.

I agree.  This reads more like McMahon was the one who suggested DSJ to a Mavs insider and they didn't give him a "hell no".  Hopefully somebody that actually listened to the podcast can confirm.  Luka seems awfully busy at the moment to be bothering with GM stuff.

Welp I guess Im gonna just have to listen to Tim's podcast to get to the bottom of this. Going to be a torturous hour of MacMahon self praise and smarminess.

That reads like Tim McMahon threw out DSJs name as a possible addition to the roster, not Luka

Yeah can confirm they talked about the last minimum roster spot. McMahon basically said they could bring back Morris or they could try to find a POA defender for the quicker guards and he suggested DSJ to somebody within the organisation. It was not shut down immediately. Bontemps and Windhorst agreed that he´d a great signing. That´s about it.

This sounds like MacMahon was the guy who suggested DSJ and not Luka.

This SH guy is an idiot for suggesting the former.

Can you imagine the fallout here when the legend of Luka wanting DSJ continued to grow and he ends up signing a min contract in LA?

Free agent center James Wiseman has agreed on a two-year contract with the Indiana Pacers, sources tell ESPN. Wiseman was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

DSJ is going to be a coveted guy because of his defense. There have already been reports of him being linked to Boston, and we know Philadelphia needs cheap defenders to fill around their newly acquired big three.

Right about now, he is going for something north of the minimum, and if he can’t get that and ends up falling into the Mavs’ price range (minimum), I assume a path to playing time will be the most important thing to him, by far. This would be one of the very worst places for him.

I would not get my hopes up.

Forrest Gump is right, I think. That 14th spot is going to be Morris, and the 15th spot will stay open. And that is probably the right way to go.

However, I suppose there is still a chance that they make a trade that changes things?

Poor Coach Carlisle.

Anything on Dinwiddie yet? He’s the one guy among minimum contract players I could see them bring in.

I could see that happening, too, but I am sure he is desperately hoping to find a job where he actually plays, and again, that would not be here.

Using FGump's numbers:

Apron Room: 3,701,258
Apron Cushion: 1,000,000
MLE remaining: 4,250,571

DSJ would get 2,800,834 for VetMin with 7 years of experience, 2,087,519 of which is paid by the Mavs and the difference, 713,315, the League pays.

At minimum Mavs could use up to 3,701,258 to sign him or maybe even 4,250,571, leaving a $450k cushion below the apron.

In summary the Mavs could pay him 900k more than the minimum or up to 1.45m more with a 450k Apron cushion.

As for role, the Mavs have one PG (Exum) on the bench that can run the offense. Some would argue Hardy is another, but I wouldn't. Given Irving and Exum's injury history I believe there is a role for another PG here. Maybe even sliding Exum down the pecking order. He was a Lindsey guy and fell out of flavor in the playoffs.

The Miami Heat are showing interest in DeMar DeRozan, per
@flasportsbuzz

DeRozan has interest in joining Miami

“The Heat has expressed interest in Bulls free agent guard DeMar DeRozan, and DeRozan also has interest in Miami, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation. The Heat is among several teams in play for the six-time All Star.”

I just don’t think the Mavericks are looking for someone to bring in as an end of rotation guy to play ahead of Exum, who Harrison brought here, or Hardy, who Harrison drafted. I think this could potentially be something they look at at the trade deadline if things aren’t going well and lack of bench ball-handling is part of the cause, but…

… I also wouldn’t list DSJ as someone who solves that particular problem. I think the draw with him is 100% about his defense, not about his ability to play point guard. The guy I would look at as an indicator of how they feel in this area is probably Dinwiddie.

This is fascinating to me. It is one of the worst kept secret in the NBA that DeRozan has been trying to get to LA for years, and I don’t even think he cares which team. He wants to live and play in Los Angeles.

I had almost penciled him in as the Lakers MLE guy, so I will be very curious to see if he can get more than that to play in Miami.

Do you think Kidd would play Dinwiddie ahead of those two? If so, what do you think of that?

RE: Trade & FA 2024-25:GSW/SAS/SAC/MIN Have Interest in Lauri| MIA Likes DeRozan? - KillerLeft - 07-02-2024

I will say this, re-DSJ: I’d support the signing, because while I don’t really view him as insurance at PG (both Exum and Hardy are better options, to me) I think he’d be excellent insurance behind GRIMES, in the event he didn’t work out or got injured or something.

Idk, I just think there’s a good chance he gets a more solidified role than that offered to him from some other team.

No, I don’t. I think those guys and Grimes are who will be the bench guards. The reason I can see Dinwiddie happening is that I don’t think anyone is going to offer him anything other than an end of bench job. In other words, of all the ride the bench jobs, and of all the ride the bench players, I can see Dinwiddie and the Mavericks choosing each other.

Anyone they bring in at this point, for any reason, is going to play about as much or even less than Seth Curry played last year.

Given all the publicity that was put out there about how Morris was one of the vocal leaders of the team, I think Gump has the right of it, and that’s probably who we should expect. It’s so obvious that the team chemistry is a big part of what they got right last year, and it’s not hard to imagine how much better life is for these teams when the guys in those final few spots aren’t constantly sulking because they aren’t playing.

Having said that, if they weren’t looking at other options, they might have announced something like this already, right? I just think that when the dust clears, that option is likely to make the most sense.
