MAVS SMOTHER CLIPS IN REVENGE MATCH
DALLAS WINS SEASON SERIES

Your Dallas Mavericks came out with intensity, determined to avenge themselves. They played with ferocity all night, Luka went supernova, and the team put together perhaps the best defensive game of the season.

GAME STORY

The Clippers’ injured list included Patrick Beverley and Serge Ibaka. The Mavs’ James Johnson was undergoing COVID protocol following his absence for personal reasons, and DFS was absent due to the birth of his son in the morning. Congrats on the little one, Doe! Rick chose an offensive look for his 18th starting lineup of the season, with Tim taking Finney-Smith’s place.

The game was close in the first quarter. The Mavs had some highlight plays. Early on, J Rich dove on the floor for a loose ball, fought for possession, and successfully called a timeout. He would go on to win the DPOG belt for that statement play. Later, Luka had an outstanding four-point play against Kawhi that had Leonard hanging his head in frustration and the Maverick bench on their feet cheering. The squad, however, ended the quarter sputtering, and took a 24-29 deficit into the second.

The home team Mavericks managed to tie the game 4 or 5 minutes into the second, and maintained a small lead for the remainder of the period. They had a ten-point advantage in the frame, and went into the locker room with a 56-51 edge. Luka got some help from the other starters, with Josh Richardson earning ten points and making several excellent defensive plays, and Tim scoring 7 points straight.

Carlisle threw a curveball into the rotation in the third, playing the starters almost exclusively. The reserves combined for only 4 minutes of the 60 played. They climbed to a double-digit lead, and managed to hold it for much of the period. The Clippers also played most of their starters heavy minutes, and both teams were looking gassed by the late minutes of the frame. The Mavs gasped to a 21-20 point finish, despite two 8-0 runs by LA, including one to close the quarter. Dallas held a 77-71 edge after three.

The final frame was a 28-18 Mavs rout. The home boys took a 9 point lead early on and never dipped below that again.

STATS

The Clippers got 9 more shots up than the Mavs, but the Mavs shot much better on the night (51/44/83) than their opponent (42/28/54). It always helps when the threes are falling, and Dallas claimed 15 triples for the evening. The Mavericks held their own on the boards (43-37 advantage), but lost 13 fast-break points and 28 total points on 18 turnovers. The hosts were limited to 30 points in the paint, but were able to punish the Clips from the perimeter. Defensively, the Mavs were determined and gritty, and the Clippers, who average 115 PPG, were held to 89 points total and an embarrassing 38 in the second half.

PLAYERS

DONCIC.  Luka went nuclear in this match, scoring 42 points (16-28), including six threes. In addition to that, he recorded 6 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Rick said he has run out of words to describe his star’s performances, but deemed this one “spectacular,” and complimented him on a “terrific” defensive outing. After the game, a very modest Luka said he thinks he is coming along in the areas of being more aggressive, taking fewer “terrible” shots, and making better decisions. He was phenomenal. We are not worthy.

PORZINGIS. Porzee had 11 points and 13 rebounds. His stat line, impressive as it is, doesn’t begin to describe his impact on the game. He was a terror, crashing the glass, altering shots, and constituting a defensive force. Rick thought Kris played a “very patient game,” had a good mix of pops and rolls, was active on the boards, and continued to “evolve” in the system. This is a different team when KP plays well. Hopefully, he can keep it up!

HARDAWAY. Tim stepped up in his advancement to the starting lineup, putting up 15 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. He was aggressive going to the basket and also had a 3-7 performance from range. Josh described Tim as a very “genuine” person, and thinks it would be hard to ask for a better teammate. It is critical to this team that THJ plays well, and it’s great to see him back in form.

RICHARDSON. Josh had an excellent game, registering 14 points, 5 boards, 3 steals, and a couple of assists. Primarily, he boasted a superior defensive performance, stopping the Clippers’ offense in so many different ways. Rick praised him for setting the defensive tone early. Josh criticized himself for not having enough energy in the prior loss, and said he wanted to let the Clippers know from the get-go that the Mavs weren’t letting them off easy in this match. The squad has a whole new dimension when J Rich plays like this.

KLEBER.  Maxi had 12 points and 6 rebounds, and was Devin Harris’ choice for winner of the belt. He had an outstanding defensive performance, with some highlight performances in one-on-one challenges, as well as playing his role well in the defensive system. Offensively, he was 4-8 from the field.  In the fourth quarter, Rick called an ATO play for him, and he justified the trust with a dramatic three, following up with an alley-oop dunk from Luka. After the game, Maxi observed that the team is capable of playing good defense, and should do it more often, lol. No argument here.

BENCH. This wasn’t the best of nights for the reserves, as Rick used a playoff-style rotation. Brunson had only 5 points in 16 minutes, and turned the ball over 5 times.  I think this game demonstrates why, as skilled as he is, he is best coming off the bench. He is just too small to be a good matchup against big, rangy teams like the Clippers, and there will be games like this at higher levels, where he is just isn’t very playable. Having said all that, he did enjoy a good turn in the fourth.

Willie had 4 points and 2 boards in 12 minutes, but had a quite respectable defensive performance, and was a positive on the night. Iwundu had some run in DFS’ absence. He didn’t score in his 11 minutes, but Rick thought he played a key role in the victory, commending his solid defense and holding his own when he was switched on to bigger players. Burke and Powell had brief cameos.

CLIPPERS.  Paul George had a much better game than in the previous match, and led his team with 28 points. Kawhi was not at his best. He put up 20 points, but was not efficient, going 9-21 from the field. Zubac and Morris combined for 25. This team seemed to run out of juice in the second half, despite playing on a day’s rest.

OBSERVATIONS

Rick said this game was a “hard fight,” and that he was proud of his guys for keeping their poise after not starting particularly well. He noted that this team has been in the playoffs, and knows what playoff basketball is like, managing to respond after every Clippers surge.

I imagine that Carlisle is quite pleased with the squad after this game. They have been working all season on making defense their signature, and arguably achieved a new level with this match. They also showed off their offensive chops, hitting their shots and getting another superb performance from Luka. If the Mavs can consistently bring their “A” game, they’re capable of making some noise. This was a most enjoyable contest to watch.

Dallas has now won the season series against the Spurs, Nuggets, and Clippers. I don’t know if they’ll be tied with any of those teams at the end of the season, but they’ll be in good shape if they are. They’ll have a chance to put their imprint on another series with the next two games in Portland.

Onward and upward, Mavs fans!

Obviously not possible to do this in every single game but it was a real all in effort. Shortened rotation and limited bench minutes.

Doncic 43 minutes
Kleber 41 minutes
Richardson 39 minutes
THJ 37 minutes
KP 34 minutes
Don't look now, but Dallas is starting to string together some wins against quality opponents.

When this "post-Covid" era began (or the six game losing streak ended) I was worried we were simply beating bad teams or good teams who were missing key people.  But, I think you have to take notice of the wins against Boston, Denver and LAC.

There have been games this season that were hard to watch.  Last night wasn't one of them.  The entire 4th was edge of your seat.  Luka was about as superstar as he's ever been and did it against tremendous pressure from really good defenders.  It was an incredible performance.
Great win and fun game.    I was interested in seeing how the starters looked when we had a scorer (Hardaway) starting in place of DFS.   I don't particularly want Hardaway starting as I think a hired gun off the bench is his best role.  Hardaway got off to a slow start, but got hot in the second quarter.   I believe this offense looks much more potent when 2 of the starters outside of KP, can score between 14 and 18 points.

KP defense is much better and he is moving better.    His offense was a little shaky, but I like to see him trying to fight position inside.   I would like to see a few more free throw opportunities.   I believe before this game he hadn't shot one in two games.   I still would like to see more touches by him, but he found a way to be productive when his offensive game was not great.   One negative though is he took a long three at the end of the game.    I believe it was relatively early in the shot clock.   Is that the best shot when we are looking to put the game away.

As great as Luka is, we really can't expect that type of performance  every playoff game (and last night felt like a playoff game).   Clippers have more options to throw at you in a playoff series.  We really have to hope for a super human effort by Luka in the playoffs.  That is not the best recipe for a long playoff run imo.
Granted that Luka's heroics were a key factor in the win, this took the whole team to accomplish and HAS to help build team confidence and push the team culture to another level. If this "toughens" their mindset and they approach the rest of the season this way, DAL will climb the standings and make some noise in the playoffs.
Special shout out to KP for his grit and grind last night. It’s easy to put in effort on nights where the shots are falling, but a night when it’s not can be a challenge. He stepped up and didn’t let it phase him that Zubac got some early put backs and offensive boards. He maintained constant effort throughout the game. He’s challenging more shots. Moving without the ball on offense. Looking more like the player of last year. Great job

Those Iwundu minutes were important as well. Kawhi was hounded for all 10 of those minutes. It can’t be easy to get such irregular minutes like he does, yet he showed up and played with defensive intensity. He’s a good example of how much length and effort matter against the top players. Making Kawhi work harder and tiring him out was a winning strategy

We are better than the clippers. We match up well against the nuggets. Nobody is scared of the spurs. Looking forward to testing our mettle against the blazers

As always it’s a grind in the West. The playoff teams are pretty much the same as last year. Lots of basketball will have been played over a calendar year once we get to June. Several of these teams like LAC are older. Who knows if some of these guys will hit a wall or get injured over the next few months. We just need to keep at it and keep working on this team defense. Anything can happen as a top 6 seed in a strange year. Since the season started we have been on a roll(since early February post covid). Let’s go mavs!
Man this was the best defensive performance I can remember from this season. It makes me wonder about DFS if we can play this good without him. I think Iwundu is clearly a better defender than DoDo is decent but overrated. Iwundu's offense is super shaky but then DFS has been sub-average on 3's.

Now the Mavs were fortunate that the Clippers shot so poorly from outside. Part of it was defense but part of it was the Clippers just missing shots. But I loved the defensive intensity. It felt like a playoff game and that's absolutely the type of effort you need on both ends to win a playoff game.

J Rich has arrived. This felt like a turning point. He has been playing better lately but man this was a standout game for him and Maxi both who were making life hard on the Clippers. Luka also really has the ability to raise his defensive game when the guys around him are playing hard on D.

KP wasn't great offensively but had some nice defensive moments. Brunson was really shaky until the fourth quarter when he played much better.

Such an entertaining game.

Same. I like DFS but I prefer Maxi and starting both of them really hurts the offense. When both start next to KP the Mavs have three guys on the floor that cannot dribble or at least attack of the catch. The opposing defense can simply run them of the 3-point line.

Well sometimes that doesn't even happen. Maybe DFS gets an open shot that he bricks or they triple team Luka to cause a turnover or bad shot.

DFS is -0.3 on/off for the season....-7.5 on defense. He has not been good this year.

As I said in the game chat, DFS is an average NBA bench player who shouldn't get more than 20 mins/game except in an emergency.

I think RC has fallen in love with DFS like he did with the Matrix (post 2011) and plays him heavy minutes even when it isn't helping the team.

I think one of the biggest problems so far is that the Mavs wings suck together:

[Image: Screenshot-2021-03-18-at-2.40.15-PM.png]

Basically this is a bad team (bottom 8 team in the NBA in Net Rating) when any combo of THJ, DFS, and JR play together....and when there is only one of them at a time then this is one of the better teams in the league (almost a top 8 team in the NBA).
That is why I've been in the "we need a guard/wing" rather than "we need a PF" camp.

For me, it's simple. Teams still don't guard DFS; but they no longer leave Kleber.

Kleber may not do much else on offense but you're not going to be playing 4 on 5 when he is on the floor. So if you're going to upgrade anyone, DFS is the guy. FWIW Kleber also has more size and guards Kawhi as well as anyone in the NBA.

That is an interesting theory that seems to be backed by Kamm’s data.  So, who do you target and who do you let go of?

I’m trying to think of SF’s who are free agents.  I come up with Duncan Robinson and Oubre off the top of my head.  OPJ is a hybrid 3/4 these days.  THJ is ranked as the 20th best SF by RPM.  Who do you replace him with that is clearly better?  If you add a SF, you probably have too many bodies when the new guy is combined with DFS, THJ and JRich.  Who do you send away?

I’m in the camp that says I’d rather not start Maxi, DFS and JRich...especially Maxi and DFS.  But, I find it much easier to find PF’s I like and move Maxi to backup 4/5 than to find a SF I like.  I’ve also observed the teams reported interest in Gordon, Gallo Crowder and RoCo at various points in the recent past.
What we need is the 2nd coming of Shawn Marion. A 2/3/4 that can play defense, hit an open shot, has a knack around the rim and doesn't stop the ball movement.

I don't know who that is though, at least that is in any way available. OPJ? Gordon?

To me THJ shows flashes, then disappears for a game or two.

I like Duncan Robinson a LOT.

I also keep THJ at this point of the DFS/THJ/JR threesome I think, but the dilemma is real....

  • I love JR's off court chemistry with Luka.
  • I love THJ's shooting which has proved me wrong and seems to be the real deal and his willingness to accept any role.
  • I love DFS's contract.
I can see the argument for any of them.

Small forwards who can defend as well or better than DFS and score as well or better than THJ are really hard to come by and not cheap ... so I'd be looking at alternate approaches.

Maybe you move THJ back to the starting lineup and look to add some scoring punch off the bench. A name that's been mentioned in the past is Devonte Graham. Maybe he could upgrade Burke's role with more consistent shooting and carve out a regular 20 MPG off the bench. Another Hornet I like is Terry Rozier.

I'd be willing to move DFS for the right deal though he's not a giveaway. I generally think he has more value than probably most people on this board. He's a smart starter in this league, a veteran guy who can stabilize a young team. He's also a fantastic piece off the bench for a contender.

Norman Powell, anyone?
The guy you probably want to target is Batum. Should be available and affordable.

I still think "all of them" is a viable option, at this point.

Batum's length bothered Luka quite a bit in stretches, Luka just really hit some tough shots against him.
And felt like Batum is hitting every open 3 against the Mavs especially in the first game
Surprised he has anything left, wouldnt be against getting this version of Batum
