MAVS CRUISE PAST GRIZZLIES IN RETURN TO AAC

After an 8-day layoff, the Mavericks posted a wire-to-wire win over Ja and the Grizz.

NOTABLE ITEMS

GAME FLOW.  Both teams got off to a relatively slow start, but the Mavs recovered quickly, thanks to 20 points in the first quarter from JRich and THJ. Our team did not have an outstanding scoring quarter (26 points), but they held Memphis to an embarrassing 13. In the second period, THJ and Brunson hit 21 of the team’s 26 points, and the home team were able to add a few points to their lead, carrying a 54-36 advantage into halftime.

The Mavs’ hot shooting cooled off in the third (0-7 from deep), but Memphis was unable to capitalize, and our boys led 81-62 after three. We more or less hung in for most of the fourth quarter, then allowed the lead to shrink to 10 in the last three minutes. Game, set, match.

LINEUPS.  Porzingis was out with back stiffness, and Rick elected to go with Dwight Powell in the starting lineup. He used a big rotation of Maxi (27 min), Powell 27, and Willie 21. The three combined for 12 points and 15 boards. Rick played his usual 8.5 man rotation, with Burke getting a 10-minute runout. Maxi exited the game with a sprained ankle in the fourth quarter. The finishing lineup was the same as the starters, but with Tim in for Maxi.

STATS.  The Mavs completed 15-41 of their threes (37%), as compared to their opponents' putrid 6-31 (19%). Dallas led in fast-break points 24-2 and bench points 52-36, while the Grizz stayed in the game with 56 PIP and 13 offensive rebounds.

LATE GAME MELTDOWN.  The last three minutes were ugly, with the Mavs committing three turnovers, giving up 5 offensive boards, and taking some bad shots. Rick said the offending parties have been spoken to.

GUARD PLAY. It was very much the Night of the Guards, with Luka, THJ, Brunson, and Josh combining for 86 of the team’s 102 points. Timmy went supernova, scoring 20 points in the first half and leading all scorers with 29 points, including a blistering 7-11 from deep. Brunson added 19 points and 7 rebounds off the bench, going 7-11 from the floor. Josh got the Mavs off to a good start with an 11-point first period, and contributed a solid 17 points and 7 boards. Luka got off to a bit of a slow beginning, with 7 points in the first half, but ended the night with a 21/7/5 line, and would have continued his 25+ point scoring streak had it not been for a head-scratching 2-9 effort from the line.

GRIZZLIES.  Ja Morant led his team with 22 points and 9 assists, and Jonas Valanciunas did most of his damage inside with 11 points and 15 boards. The Mavs got a little lucky that Memphis missed some open shots, but overall, the visitors gave a decidedly underwhelming performance.

OBSERVATIONS

Rick thought this was one of the team's best defensive games of the season. He complimented Maxi for his efforts on that end, and raved over Timmy. Coach commended Hardaway for being an edgy competitor, playing like a winner, always looking to play the right way and make an impact, and showing improvement in the defense and rebounding areas. Per Carlisle, Tim is “my kind of guy.”

It was a bit disconcerting to hear that KP was on the injury list after a week off, but perhaps the Mavs were just resting him on the first night of a B2B. I debated with myself about admitting this, but one of my first thoughts on seeing this was to wonder whether the team would put in a better defensive performance without him. I don’t want to have to think like that. At any rate, Dallas did a good job in his absence against an offensively challenged Memphis team.

The team looked fresh and ready, and I liked the sense of urgency, minus maybe the last few minutes. Rick said the team needed to concentrate better at the end, but didn’t want to dwell on that, due to his desire not to “make a win feel like a loss.” I can dig that philosophy.

Overall, not the most suspenseful of games, but a solid performance from our team, which looked much the better for their days off. Speaking of, I hope all the MFFLs have recovered from the weather disaster in Texas. The Mavs, Cuban, Cynt Marshall, and several of the players joined to contribute $1.25M to the relief effort. Dwight Powell led the charge among the players to chip in to alleviate the suffering in their state. Kudos to the civic-minded individuals and organization!

Last but certainly not least, Luka is to be congratulated on being voted an All-Star Team starter, edging out Damian Lillard on a fan vote tiebreaker. He is the only Maverick ever to be voted in as a starter in consecutive years. Doncic, ever the picture of graciousness, said that he wasn’t expecting to be a starter, that Lillard probably deserved it a little more than he did, and that in a couple of years, no one will remember who started and who didn’t.

The Celtics are up next, on Tuesday evening.

Be well, Mavs fans!
Agree mavsluvr but hope they'll further upgrade O/D performance tonight to get a W us much better team than MEM yesterday.

Regarding AS show, I would rather see there some nasty tricks than toooons of spectacular 3p shooting.
Thanks for the recap Mavsluvr! I know it takes some effort to put it together. Respect

That was one of the most complete games we’ve played all season(just a few sloppy minutes at the end). Good team defense and rebounding even though we lost the board battle. Just shows you though we will need rebounding help from outside the organization. Can’t expect our guards to bang down low and get 5 boards every night.

Really hope Maxi is doing well after he left the game

Front court still has big issues but the back court is putting it all together. They’re leading us now playing well offensively and defensively together
Thanks for the recap. A little less extensice than usual but I get why - there really was not so much to talk about. The Grizzlies plaed pretty bad, the Mavs were pretty good overall, so easy and deserved win, sans the late game meltdown which we will ignore for the time being. It is a good sign that we pulled one our pretty easily without Luka having a moster performance.

I have to admit I had the same line of thinking regarding KP: The team's interior defense seemed much better, even with Powell inside and god knows I have hated on him for his lack of rim protection. I hate to admit it, but this says a lot about KP's recent struggles. I just hope it's him being a step slow and it will work itself out with time. I mean it kind of has to, KP used to be a good defender and he does not look done physically.

Next couple of games will be huge. Let's see if we can make a push and get that 7th or 8th spot.

Well deserved. I thought it was between him and THJ. I expected Valanciunas to dominate in the paint but Powell shut him down. 5/18 from the field. Only 2 FTAs.
Powell is without a doubt the best post defender on the roster. I wonder if it would make sense for him to bulk up and focus on interior defense. Wouldn´t be the first offensive minded bigman that turned into a defensive specialist with growing age or after an career altering injury.  Brook Lopez and Andrew Bogut are just the most recent examples.

I keep saying this over and over, and it never seems like anyone agrees, but no matter how many times I question myself and reevaluate I always reach the same conclusion after watching: I think Powell IS a defensive minded player. In fact, I think he’s one of the best defenders on the team. It’s just that no one pays attention to his defense until he’s one on one with someone in the paint, usually a bigger, stronger someone. If you watch what he does in all situations that don’t end up in the paint, or even those same possessions BEFORE the ball ends up there, he’s really effective, imo.

I agree that he should get stronger. That is definitely his weakness. I just don’t think his strong points are fully appreciated here (not meaning to engage with you, specifically about this – just in general).

Well I have been saying he is a solid defender since 2015-16...and even moreso since 2017-18. So maybe you haven't been listening to me. Smile

Yeah, I was hoping they were just load managing KP last night, but it appears he's out for tonight's game as well. Yikes!

MAYBE

The quote was MAYBE

If you are going to quote someone, please do it accurately. Maybe and probably have very different meanings

Interesting idea!

Lol, really don't get why you are so harsh about this. I mean you are right essentially from a semantics standpoint, but to be even more nitpicky, luvr didn't use quotes so it was not actually a legit quotation in the first place and more or less paraphrasing is acceptable.

He is right though, and the media is taking that statement and running with it as if he was saying probably. Last night's TnT crew in the studio talked about it in the probably sense.

Because "probably" feeds into the Lillard starting cause while "maybe" is Luka being nice

>>>Doncic, ever the picture of graciousness, said

While not a direct quote with quotation marks, it is not correct to change a person's message

>>>Doncic, ever the picture of graciousness, said that while he wasn’t expecting to be a starter, that Lillard didn't deserve it as much as he did

Change a couple of words and the meaning completely changes
Words matter
Sometimes I read this forum and wonder: "Who hurt you all?"

I didn't read MFFL's statement and think he was being harsh like meister seems to think. There were all caps in the post which tends to make people think it's shouting. I usually use all caps to make the words stand out instead of clicking on the bold or underline functions (lazy way I know). The rest of the post seemed massaging though which is why I didn't take the caps to be shouting.

Yep, me too. Examples:

THIS is emphasis.
