Hi guys,

the other night, Harp and Followill were talking about Pat Rileys book "The winner within", which got me thinking also about Phil Jacksons books, but he has got so many, does anyone have a recommendation, which one is best?

Thanks in advance!

I like the following books by Phil Jackson:

How JET and Peja Desectrated My NBA Career
My Secret and Successful Plan to Screw-up the Knicks for Decades
Coat Tailing: The Definitive How-To
I haven’t read the Jackson books, but have always wanted to. I would love to hear from those who have about where to start.

They're all interesting. I think if I were to choose one, it would be The Last Season: A Team In Search of Its Soul. It is an account of the last season of the Kobe-Shaq Lakers. Phil kept a journal that season, and the book was taken from the journal entries and published the following year. It was a very difficult season in many respects, and he describes it an a very candid and raw manner. It reads like a novel, but his spiritual philosophy is woven into the story, how he dealt with the many problems presented, and his perspective on it after the fact.

That's exactly where I am coming from. Pretty sure mavsluvr will help us out here (or so I hope).

Also sorry to not be of service. Haven't read any of Pat Riley's or Phil Jackson's books, but you definitely have piqued my interest a bit. Might pick one up this summer.
Good thread..

I have Eleven Rings by Phil Jackson, which provides a compelling and straightforward account of his title runs with the Bulls and Lakers organizations. There's some really interesting behind the scenes information that is worth a read particularly in light of Kobe's passing. Jackson doesn't give a whole lot of credit to the Mavericks 2011 evisceration of the Lakers team and instead blames their collapse on inner turmoil, but yes overall a pretty good read.

Bill Simmons Book of Basketball is a pretty fun one if you're a fan of his.

I've been wanting to read this one, too, but have been worried that it might be the type of thing that's less interesting as it becomes dated. Based on your experience reading it, is that a valid fear?

I think he's updated it a few times since it's initial release.  It's a good read even if it is dated.

I read one of Phil Jackson's books and it was as unremarkable as any of the fluff that Jordan ever released as a book.

I liked Rodman's book but it's been over a decade since I've read it.

And the Celtics.
Book of Basketball is very entertaining - its a lengthy book but an easy read
Loved the stats, the stories, the rants Bill-Simmons style. I would say its as entertaining today as it was in 2009.
