Have to give Phoenix credit for not cheaping out on their title contention opportunity. Some teams do.

Maybe.  But they also might have locked themselves into a financial bind, which limits their ability to find additional complementary pieces.

Interesting, but given the nudge-wink comparisons to the Dallas situation, your point has zero relevance whatsoever to the Mavs and JB. An overpriced JB is still a more valuable asset than anything else we would have had other than Luka, and a Dallas Mavericks team with that overpriced JB would have been far better than whatever we're trotting out.

To be honest, I think JB wanted to be gone regardless, because he knew that his ultimate role here was "future trade asset." As a non-two-way player, the longterm fit with Luka was not there. However, while I don't believe that the Mavs would have kept him anyway, his repugnance of them was likely viewed with a sigh of relief, since our owner is too gravely stupid to see the truth of what I wrote in the graph above.
JB isn’t even over priced.  He would have been, but the economic realities of the entire country and the NBA have changed. Most people suffer from anchored expectations. It’s a powerful cognitive bias for the uninitiated. Adapt or die. This year, the teams that spent decisively will be the winners.

Feels like they wanted him, but not enough to hurt themselves for it
