At 21 minutes is where the comments start:

Quote:So now you’ve got this dynamic in which Morey’s being attacked , Tsai is responding in the way he’s responding, and the league is trying to find some middle ground here or figure out how it can exist even as two exhibition games are about to be played in China. And part of our reporting finds out that behind the scenes - though Tsai and the NBA deny this vehemently - behind the scenes, Tsai was seeking to get Morey fired.”

Remember the LeChina/LeMao memes? Well they weren't totally unfounded.

Quote:”I don’t think people knew this at the time. There were these games that were about to be played in Shanghai, one of the teams that’s there to play is the Lakers, with LeBron of course. There’s an international incident happening in real time in front of these guys, and there are meetings that happen between the players and the commissioner as well as the players themselves.”

”LeBron has got his new movie Space Jam that’s about to open, it’s in production. The hope - at the time at least - was that it was going to open in China. So behind closed doors, the players are meeting and asking how are they going to deal with this, what are they going to do. LeBron was quite vocal in raging about Morey, and how something needed to happen to Morey.”

Having a fellow NBA owner conspire to fire a general manager over comments regarding free speech (in order to appease the CCP) is a REALLY bad look. At least it is to me.

In what context is that ever okay? What if the CEO of Apple got really mad over something a mid-level employee did at like Starbucks and tried to get them fired? Of course this will never truly be verified, but if it does, should/could the NBA take any actions regarding it?
It just shows what a fraud LeBron is. The dude doesn’t give one damn about anybody else.

Oh for sure. I can't believe Lebron (nor anyone in his circle) didn't recognize the public backlash that came when he threw Morey under the bus and essentially became a shill for the CCP.

Made him look like a gigantic hypocrite at the least.
The entire NBA is culpable save for a few (Morey and Freedom).

I don't think it was as pervasive as the entire NBA. If I remember correctly, Adam Silver came out and flat out said we're not going to encourage the termination of an employee utilizing his freedom of speech (although at that point it was becoming a national issue).

I think some owners probably agreed with Tsai, as their bottom line was being effected greatly by the pandemic and that just added more fuel to the fire. We just don't know (and likely never will) the full details.

But if it really is true that Tsai (who has known connections with the CCP) tried to throw his weight around to persecute an American citizen who doesn't even work for him just for speaking his mind, then that's an egregious abuse of power and should be punished imo. What punishment? That I don't know. Any fine that's less than 100 mill is a drop in the bucket for Tsai.

On the other hand, Morey wasn't fired I suppose...? The official narrative is that he stepped down voluntarily to spend more time with his kids. He then found another executive position not even 2 months later so make of that what you will. So at the end of the day I guess there really isn't anything the NBA can do.
They may not have pushed to get Morey fired, but most everyone in the NBA is willing to turn a blind eye and kowtow to the goose laying the golden egg.  And to be fair, the NBA is hardly alone in this.
The guy's even Taiwanese. What a hypocrite

Yeah, Tsai has odd allegiances. His parents fled from China and its communist oppression to Taiwan, where he was born and grew up in his younger years, then later he was educated in the US. He has also lived in Hong Kong.

Nevertheless he seems to have no loyalty to either Taiwan or Hong Kong, and has apparently embraced China's policies and political preferences in recent years. Either he has sold out (since his personal wealth and influence is sourced from his business in China) or he never had any national patriotism to his country in the first place.
