I get that the consensus here seems to be that tying up money in RFA bids is a big mistake. And I recall Fisher repeating “kicked in the Gortats” a million times. But do you all think there is a reasonable approach to restricted free agency that can work? 

Yeah, yeah, get an agreement in principle and then work out a sign & trade. That’s a proven methodology. But it isn’t signing an RFA. It’s a trade approach. 

But is there a way to manage the risks and nab the rewards of signing an RFA and sweating out the intervening delay as we wait for the current team to match or decline? That’s my question. And with the hold period reduced to just 2 days, doesn’t that change the calculus dramatically?

My answer? As usual, I’m unsure.

I have a sort of feeling that @"ClutchDirk" has the right of this stuff. 

I think the only way to win at RFA, and maybe FA in general, is to know the target's answer before you offer the contract. Rig the game.

Maybe do a video call with the other team GM and zoom in on the guys eyeballs when you mention the contract you will offer the player. 

But yeah it is pretty risky if you can’t do a sign and trade deal.
Giving Collins an offer would mean THJ is gone,  he won’t hang around waiting.
But if the Mavs strike out on other guys and don’t want to pay THJ then they could play the RFA game.
Lonzo and Collins are top 10 free agents so if they can steal one of them it would be worth it.
But trying and having the other team match will screw the off-season big time.
