Who was the player of the game who elevated his game to help the team win?
Luka all day. Although I also couldn't be more proud of Powell.

But my honorable mention goes to Carlisle for the strategy change. We went big all night and it made PG and KL seem human again. And I also find it interesting that I don't think KP got a single turnaround post-up shot, with the coach preferring shooters spacing the floor around Boban and Powell. He really mixed up the gameplan and it paid off.

great recap. I also went with Luka, but it was the team defense that won it. Luka got tired in the second half and almost managed to lose the game, but still. Mavs won despite none of the non Luka guys went on fire. A bit lucky with Clippers missing some open shots. I hope Luka will be able to rest enough for the home game.
Oh how I missed dirkie threads.

Please never let them disappear again.

This one has to go to DFS. His defense was insane. Luka obviously deserves it, but if it wasn't for DFS stepping up the Mavs lose this one.
Luka with the massive carry here.  DFS with some nice D.  DP very bouncy.
I'm not sure if DFS actually deserves this or not, but I'm voting for him. That last possession on Kawhi, alone, made my heart so happy.

Yeah, that defense on Kawhi's last shot was something else.

Also very very surprised Carlisle didn't just foul the Clips there. Force them to make 2 and foul the Mavs with maybe 6 secs left.

Hopefully the Mavs make both and then the Clips are forced to make a 3 with <6 seconds and no timeouts.
All three options could get it, but I went DP cause the guy went from end of the bench this series to top-3 contributor to the win.
Luka gets the nod. I mean, he scored or assisted on 31 out of 37 baskets. There is no offense without him. THJ deserved to be listed. His rebound at the end was the play of the game. Powell really made a difference. That game looked like a bona-fide playoff game.

Had to go Luka but its a great point about Carlisle here.   I was surprised to see coach C. going BIG vs small, counter matching Ty Lue this time instead of trying to match up small vs small where advantage was adding up clearly to LA.  Its something I've long advocated to be used in spurts and stretches but never thought Carlisle would do it. Kudos.

The +/- doesn't tell the full story on the result because with the additional time of bigs inside the Clippers really worked overtime using their best and big wings to lock up (and hack) Dallas BIGS men almost the entire game.  Powell, Kleber, WCS were all able to rotate in completely fresh without foul concerns.

Dirkie for Coach Carlisle.  Exclamation
I gave it to Powell, although it's hard to overlook Luka having a hand in 73 points.

Props to Carlisle giving the finger to Lue's small ball lineup.
Luka but the Coaching was phenomenal.
Powell was on fire as the energy off the bench.
Brunson just does not match up well with the Clipps length...
And despite that... What was it Randy Galloway once said?

Luka saves all butts!

There wasn't a bad choice given.  Obviously it would have been nice for THJ to have been more efficient, but it was surprising to see that he played over 45 minutes.  It tells you what Carlisle thinks of him as he only sat 2:16 at the end of the first and 30 seconds at the end of the third.

I went with Powell also because it isn't an MVP of the game award.  It is a most improved award (elevated) and Powell went from zero to hero.  We were +17 in Powell's segment in the third quarter.  His energy sparked a 22-3 run.  Maybe as important as anything, this marked the only time this year where we were truly successful with KP and DP sharing the floor.  Powell and KP were part of the closing lineup also except for the final :39 seconds.  But, the lineup wasn't as successful going -5 as LAC came close to wiping out our lead.  I don't think Powell/KP should start in this series, but Powell's energy late in the 1st/3rd might be helpful.  It was tonight.

A couple other notes while I'm at it:

We lost the rebound war, but won the game.  The prior four games went to the team with the most boards

We won the 3% contest .400 to .389.  Neither team is letting opponents get much inside the arc.  Dallas shot .416 on non-3's and LAC sot .412

We solved Rondo, who was -19 in this game.  It might be more accurate to say we continue to crush Zubac (also -19) and since he's not starting, he's getting his minutes next to Rondo, which hurts Rondo's effectiveness.

We have all sorts of zones designated by numbers.  There's a 2-3 and a 3-2 and a 1-2-2 and so forth.  I nominate the Boban/KP zone be called the 14-7 zone.  14 feet and 7 inches of height patrolling the baseline.

Was the cause for that run really Powell or was it George (4th foul) out - Zubac in Clippers move? Btw - George was in foul trouble most of the games.

I would actually try it. I am extremely scared of Bobi experience - will Clippers really shoot that bad again? I think we cashed in this chip.

Official NBA site actually has .389 vs .368. Mavs still won
I think it has to be Luka.   He controlled that game.

Hardaway deserves a mention though.   Two big free throws.  A big rebound.  And a huge three in the middle of the fourth quarter when the Mavs were running on quicksand on offense.  It was a difficult shot too.  That led to a KP three on the next possession that I thought put the game away......turned out to be false though.

I liked what Powell did too.  Great energy.   I hope we continue to see minutes from him.  I think all of our specialty big man had nice runs and brought something to the game.

I will need to review DFS game on defense.   Interesting that Luka and some of the press were very positive about him right after the game.
